Anyone try using coconut oil instead of butter or margarine for in cookie or bread recipes? I have been using it to grease pans for baking and stove top cooking.

I love coconut oil. I cook with it. I bake with it. I even have been known to put it on my skin and rub it in if my skins get all dry and flaky. I like how it tastes and that it doesn't take much to do most things.

VitaCost is great. I buy all my supplements there.

I usually buy my coconut oil through Amazon. I like the "Kevala" brand. I use so much, I buy it in a gallon container. It's pretty popular, so they occasionally don't have it in stock. Just keep checking.

I use coconut oil instead of butter, I love the taste on toast and on my vegetables. I also use it on my skin and on my nails. I drink Coconut milk simply because I am trying to not have to much diary. I still use EVOO but coconut oil has been my go to oil for many years. Puritan Pride has promotions where you can buy one and get one free. Check it out.

checked it out in Walmart, rather pricey. Will check Amazon and other places. Thanks for the info

Coconut oil rocks. I put it in my morning coffee sometimes, I make a sugar free chocolate with it, and it works extremely well as a personal lubricant. I'm sensitive to perfumes, so its perfect for us.

I order mine from either Amazon or Vitacost (Nutiva brand), or when they have it on sale or offer free shipping, I love the gold label coconut oil from Tropical Traditions.

Costco sells it for a really good price.

Also say "thanks" for all the information. I wish it was less expensive...a small cotainer runs around $6 here.

@ JUSTEATREALFOOD - Thanks for your response; you always say what I want to say but don't seem to be able to "spit" out the right words. I think you are likely correct when you talk about hydrogenated coconut oil versus organic virgin coconut oil - anything hydrogenated should always be avoided! I personally use coconut oil on a daily basis - both in cooking and cosmetically (my skin has never looked better BTW). I love the stuff!

I'm not sure why coconut oil has been blacklisted. Yes it is true that it is a saturated fat. It is also true that coconut oil contains ZERO cholesterol.

The old studies that showed coconut oil to be harmful we're done using hydrogenated coconut oil which contains trans fats.

I use virgin coconut oil often. It has been shown to have many positive health effect in recent studies. Just google "virgin coconut oil pubmed" or "coconut oil pubmed" to see the many studies.

Coconut oil is great, and has many uses other than simply cooking with it. My reading indicates it's a very good oil due to its nutritional profile. It also doesn't rancidify as easily as some of the other oils. It has a higher smoke point as well, which makes it better suited to cooking. Another oil in this category would be palm *kernel* oil (not necessarily the plain palm oil).

Olive oil is a good product also - I only use EVOO for cool-temp drizzling, however. Its smoke point is lower. I use regular olive oil if I'm tempted to cook with it... but I generally use coco oil or meat-based renderings and butter.

Another good oil is macadamia nut oil, but it's even pricier than coconut oil!

If you are thinking of oils, you ought to look at the ones we keep being recommended. Canola oil is the last thing I'd let in *my* house!

Coconut oil is not recommended to be a daily, "go to" oil due to its saturated fat content. It is not considered to be a source of healthy fats and there is no evidence to support the claims that are currently being made about other supposed health benefits. Here's a link to an article entitled, "The Truth about Coconut Oil." It also discusses other coconut products.

Both organic unrefined coconut oil and organic extra virgin olive oil are good (you have to be careful with olive oil because some of the cheaper brands are not pur olive oil) - coconut oil is better for cooking with as it can withstand higher temperatures than olive oil can - frying eggs in it makes them taste great, while olive oil is better used cold like for salad dressings.

I like coconut products too, but I was just at the grocery store, debating whether to buy unsweetened almond or unsweetened coconut milk. I noticed the coconut milk has no fiber, protein or any vitamins, whereas the almond milk was fortified. So I'd also make sure whatever you're drinking does have some tangible nutrients in it.

I am making my own coconut milk as there is not much out there without something else in it. I put 2 cups of organic coconut flakes in the Blendtek and add up to the 3.5 or 4 cup line with water heated to about 175 and blend it...let it sit and blend again. It lasts me for about 4 days and I know it has nothing else in it and is organic.

Coconut oil is not only great for you, but so much more. You can do "oil pulling" (google it) and it is a really great product!

I have replaced my oils with Coconut & Avocado Oils. I use coconut oil when making popcorn, put a tablespoon in my smoothies, use the spray oil for sauteing. It is really good for you. I also use Avocado oil in place of Olive Oil to cook with and for salads, it stands up better to heat than olive oil and is way better for you. I do not use canola oil any longer and rarely use olive oil.

I use coconut 'milk' now, really like it as I am lactose intolerant . Lower in calories than skim milk. Does anybody know about coconut oil ? Is it better than olive oil to use ?
