As parents we have to stop the fast food mentality! We did not need to supersize or to eat out daily!
We have to teach our children how to eat to be healthy. We are seeing kids with "adult onset" diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Most of the time this is caused by poor diet.
We need to serve healthy meals that are high in vegetables and whole grains. We need to insist that our farmers grow healthy foods, not modified to increase production at the expense of nutrition.
We need to not buy and keep junk food in our homes but have healthy snacks on hand.
We need to teach our kids to eat when hungry, not when sad or mad or to celebrate.
We currently have a generation in their 40s and 50s who are not expected to live as long as their parents, mainly because of nutrition related diseases. I wonder how early our current crop of kids will die?
I see it in the hospital all the time, 90 yr old gramma on a vitamin and a thyroid me, . 65 yr old son on meds for HTN and diabetes, 40 year old "child"with end stage renal disease and heart disease and diabetes, and 20 year olds dying from liver failure and renal failure. All in 1 family. And the 5 to 10 year olds are overweight.
I think walking and playing physical games with them is a great place to start. Train their tastebuds I think keeping only healthy treats in the house ( plenty of fruit) and limiting things like ice-cream to outside the house or only once a week treats is another good idea. I think training them on low-sodium foods diminishes the love of salt. And maybe get them involved in making salads and such...they may enjoy eating their creations.

Childhood obesity is a viscous cycle: overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults, who in turn are more likely to produce overweight children. Through research, I have found that, other than genetics, there are multiple causes for this: increased time in front of the TV or playing video/ computer games, less physical activity, increased calorie intake, even not getting enough sleep. Eating right and getting the right amount of physical activity now, can save a child’s physical and psychological health in the future. Current health risks for obese children can cause high blood pressure, asthma, sleep apnea, joint problems, and fatty liver disease. These health risks now can lead to more serious health conditions as adults, such as heart disease, diabetes, and even some types of cancer.
What are some ways you get your children to eat healthier or to increase their physical activity in this world where fast, processed foods and technology are taking over?
