I just want to note that NO pain is normal - pain is your body's way of saying "something is wrong" and "stop doing what you're doing". So whether it's chest pain, knee pain, hip pain, or anything else, never ever ever just "push through it".
The only time my asthma bothers me now is when I exercise. Then my kids say I sound like the broken squeeker from Toy Story. My daughter gets the chest tightness. Seeing a doctor about this will take care of it I'm sure.
I wondered about asthma later after I posted yesterday since you've had it since childhood. Be sure to des cribe to the GP as you did here. You might also want to consider a heart monitor if he approves running. It tells me if I am overdoing it in the heat when the rate goes up. Please let us know what you hear from the doc.
Go see a Dr. But have you ever been tested for asthma? My son had chest pain too when running and was diagnosed with asthma. He didn't have the shortness of breath that you normally associate with asthma. He has a deep chest cough when he is having an attack, or when he has a cold. We call called it the Old Grandpa Cough. Get your heart checked but also ask to have your lungs checked too.

Thanks everyone, I wish I knew earlier that it wasn't normal. i'm going to call my GP on Monday and get an appointment.
I'd agree that chest pain is something you should address with your doctor.

I used to love to run when I was young, but I would always get these chest pains. I always thought they were normal. And I still get them today. But when I go to the gym and run on the treadmill, my chest/throat does not hurt as much. I also never get them when I swim. It feels like very very cold air in the middle of my chest/throat. And I would get this salty feeling in my mouth and feel a bit like I am going to throw up. It also hurts more when I inhale, the deeper I breathe, the more it'll hurt, so this forces me to take shallow breathes when I run, and I know that would not provide me with enough oxygen. This usually happens after I run for around... 3 to 4 minutes. If i stop and walk, it'll go away and come back when I run again. Its better if I can control my breathing, but it gets harder because instinct tells me to breathe faster, and that makes it worse. I don't know if this is normal or not. I always thought it was just part of being out of breath but I've heard that chest pains when you exercise is not good.. I am literally just starting to try to get back in shape, but even when I was young, and I pretty active I would still have this problem. My legs would not even be slightly tired but I would have to stop and walk because my chest hurts and I don't want to throw up in the middle of the block. I'm going to start swimming again soon but I want to run on the weekends when I'm to lazy to go to the pool... Any thoughts? Or can any one describe what they feel when they are out of breath so I know if maybe I should go talk to the Doc...
Also want to note again, its not where my heart is, its more where my sternum is so thats why i've never been concerned... and I've had it.. always even as a child playing tag. So normal people dont get chest pains when they run?
