Here's another angle....

Take a look at my ticker. That bunny has moved from 245 to 198 since Jan 5/2013. Now get ready for the shocking truth:

Without any formal or regular exercise routine.

Yeah gasp and horror, shock and awe. I have not gone to Curves, nor stepped foot on a treadmill, nor bounced along to a workout DVD, nor hiked nor biked, no swimming, no zumba, no yoga, NOTHING.

Now. I am not promoting this as any sort of ideal. I know it is something I do have to address. For as nice as it is to "lose weight", the real benefit I'm seeking is "improved health" and thus I will have to improve my fitness if I want to achieve that benefit.

But for right now? I don't want to. So I don't.

It is *better* to do it but you do not *have* to do it, and you do not need to rationalize or justify it to anyone.

Of course, whatever choices we make have consequences. If I choose not to exercise, the consequence is requiring a lower calorie range to see change happen on the scale. I accept this consequence - and then I must make the choice of whether I want to adhere to such a lower calorie range. If i choose no, then the consequence is, I will not lose weight. Or, back around to the choice of whether I am going to exercise or not.

So. Decide which consequences you can live with, and which you can't. Then make your choice. No one but you can make your choices, and no one but you has to live with the consequences of your choices. And no one at all can change the fact that choices and consequences are linked. We can empathize "oh yes it is so hard to lose weight when I like eating so much and dislike exercise so much" but we can't change the basic laws of nature to make it any easier.

HONEYLISSABEE, which is more important to you? Being entertained, or losing this weight and being healthy?

When the answer is no longer entertainment (which you've made clear is the priority here in your last post) you'll find you don't have to trick yourself into focusing. You're not focusing because you're exercising for the wrong reasons.

I don't exercise because it's "fun" (although I've done it long enough now that it actually is) I exercise because my heart needs it. Because my body feels better. Sometimes it's a pain in the ass. SOmetimes it's really boring. That's tough. I do it anyway. Going to the doctor's boring too, but I do that, because I have to.

Second DragonChild and others, at some point you're going to have to take responsibility for getting it done. You have made a number of excuses that frankly, no suggestion on this board is going to be able to overcome. In the end, each person has to make the determination to do this and give it their all.

If you don't want to do it, no one can make you do it. And if you don't care enough to *want* to do it, then apparently you won't do it. Not everyone enjoys working out, but like someone else above said, it is a necessary part of one's day. My little brother doesn't like brushing his teeth, but he does it because he doesn't want his teeth rotting out of his head. Same with exercise--you may not like doing it, but you don't want your body shutting down later from lack of exercise and healthy living.

A Curves workout is what you make of it- to a degree. I was told to slow down several times because I was jumping and jogging on the recovery stations to try to get my heart rate up. They don't want you working out too hard there. Besides, no matter how hard I try pushing myself on the machines, I don't feel it at all the next day.

I hate exercising in general. Even riding my scooter is only fun for about 5 minutes at most. Today, I was done 1 minute, 55 seconds into it. I don't care how good it is for me, if I'm miserable doing it, I'm eventually going to get to a point where I'm no longer able to force myself into working out. The only way I'm able to get any kind of light workout on a regular basis is if I disguise it. I cannot stand going out for a walk. I've tried music. I've tried listening to audio books. Doesn't help. The only time walking outside has ever been somewhat enjoyable is when I'm in NYC.

Here, the only things worth going to are close to 10 miles away. I can certainly walk that (I've done it before), but not without being in a lot of pain the next day.

And yes, I would use the Y membership if I had one, but I don't have one and I may never get one. It depends on if I get this one specific job. The best I can hope for is a special offer at Planet Fitness, and even that's pushing it.

I will say that I have never been able to stick to any workout routine except for 1: to walk 10,000 steps per day. I guess because that's one of those goals where I don't have to work out to complete. Sure, it helps, but simply not sitting down also is good enough on some days.

There are a lot of things that I do that I don't feel like doing. Things like going to work - but I do love my paycheck. Having dinner with the in-laws - it'd be amusing to get up partway through and say I'm done and leave because I'm not enjoying it, but I won't do that either.

I guess I'm lucky that I discovered I love running. I like pushing myself with intervals. I like seeing my distance and/or speed increase over time. I loved my long runs for the half marathon and knowing I could do it.

Or I could just say that it's boring and go back to the couch and hating my body.

It seems for every solution someone has posted, you have an excuse. You love Jillian Michael's videos, but won't do them because you're not in good enough shape. Yet you don't do anything to get into shape to do them. You love to walk, but not really. If you get the Y membership, will you actually use it? Or will that be too boring too?

As for curves, I know people who have had amazing amounts of success there, losing 50 or more pounds. Who cares if you're the youngest one there? I'm the youngest person at a lot of activites I do and the oldest at several other things, yet I don't let that stop me enjoying what I like to do. Again, those are just excuses. I also understand that a Curves workout is what you make it - YOU decide how hard to work and the faster you lift, the more resistance you'll work against. The faster you jog on between the machines, the higher your heartrate. It is what you make of it.

And since you love Jillian Michaels videos, you should already know what she'd say to you if she read this.

Thank you, Blue. Finally, someone who actually seems to understand my problem.

As I've stated before, I love workout DVDs. I'm actually miserable at Curves because 1. I'm by FAR the youngest person there, and I end up leaving the workout feeling about the same as if I spend that half-hour power-walking around Target. I find it's more difficult for me to "phone it in" as Jillian Michael's says when I'm doing a workout DVD. I still like mall walking, or going on walks. I'll walk down to the grocery store when I'm bored to get a little exercise in, but that's not a realistic program for me. I do want to do a lot of different things: HIIT, walking, jump rope (as part of a HIIT workout, perhaps), biking, swimming, riding my scooter. However, I feel like I'll do best if those are "extras." I'll have my set routine with a program with cardio and strength training (like the 28 Day Boot Camp or any Jillian Michael's program), but I'll add little things as bonuses. I know that, even when I'm so sore I can barely move, if I get in a good workout in the morning, I'm more likely to want to go out on my scooter in the afternoon.

See, I've always been big into "sneaking in" a workout. I love seeing my step count rack up when I go shopping, or when I babysit. When I was working at a preschool, I'd run around and dance with the kids. That was certainly a workout. However, I also need structure. I need to follow an instructor or have a specific program for me when it comes to strength training. Because as boring as DVDs can be, they aren't nearly as boring as lifting free weights in front of the TV. I'll walk while watching TV for hours on end, but I don't like weight lifting.

Wow, BLUESLEEP, that is so interesting. I've been practicing hot power yoga six times a week for the last couple of years. Almost two weeks ago, I suffered an injury and have had to temporarily stop my practice while I heal. Last weekend, I found that the physical pain wasn't nearly as bad as the repercussions of my negative thinking that had arisen. My yoga practice has been a training for me to be wholly in the present. It has allowed me to begin a daily seated meditation practice but I find seated meditation very difficult. I have a hard time being in the present without the use of my body. This scattered thinking took me many places but not the here and now. I feel that my entire health, both mental and physical, depends on this. As a child runner, I remember this aspect of running: listening to the breath, feeling the heart beat, processing the passing landscape, feeling the ground underfoot, the temperature of me and the world around me. It was a sensory and mindful experience more than anything and it got me through a problematic childhood. Our culture doesn't currently promote mindfulness, a focus steeped in the present. I really appreciated reading your post. It sure resonates with me. Thanks.

I sometimes have the same problem....especially when I've laid off focused activity for a while.

My solution is a bit different than the others here, though.

So much of our day is spent gazing at screens, switching from one to another, frantically looking for...something, anything to "entertain" us. I teach college students. There are days that I really think that my students are mentally disabled. Please understad that I am not being flip here or using the term in a derogatory way. Over the ten years I've been teaching, students' ability to focus--on anything--has suffered immensely and is getting worse every year. They cannot think through problems or read anything longer than a couple pages. It isn't that they aren't intelligent -- they simply have no focus. I really think people's brains are changing--and not for the better-- as technology becomes more advanced.

Lest you think I'm simply a disgruntled prof, I am the first to admit that I suffer from it too. I feel it when I'm trying to work and, like you, when I'm exercising. On my worst days, here's my mind during a run:

OK. Feeling good! Ready to go!. Huh, I'm more tired than I thought. I wonder what L is doing. Focus on the running, blue sleep. Look -- shiny! I have a lot to do today. I'm tired. How many minutes has it been? 10? Really? I'm bored. I hate this song. I'm gonna switch it. I'm breathing really hard. I'm too tired to do this. I quit.

The truth is, when I quit, I'm never *really* physically tired. I just don't have the focus.

So...what to do? I've often tried to "medicate" with something stimulating like TV at the gym or something, but more often, I use the exercise itself as medicine and try to use the time to escape from the frantic rest of the day.

It isn't always easy...but I can tell you that a) running outside and b) having at least a couple of runs a week without ANY music at all has really helped me feel better. I am learning to focus on not just the exercise, but in other ares of my life too.

I guess my advice is to suck it up...but try to enjoy sucking it up! You'll reap both physical and mental health benefits in the long term!

I just said I'm doing my Curves trial, but that's only 10 weeks and I'm really not getting much of a workout there. I could probably do the circuit 4 or 5 times if they allowed it. I'm definitely NOT in shape, but Curves is way too easy, so I still need to supplement my workouts there.

I don't like walking in the rain- especially when there are heavy downpours, thunder, and lightning. I'm also not a fan of being outside when it's really cold or hot. For that reason, indoor exercises are best for me as a regular routine- I can do them regardless of the weather, and I get the best workouts from doing exercise DVDs. I just don't like doing the DVDs. I guess because I'm setting aside time to "work out".

But, at the same time, nobody got me into better shape than Jillian, so that's gotta be saying something. Maybe I just need to suck it up and stick with the DVDs, and hopefully get a gym membership in the next few months. I still plan on doing other little things: jump roping, riding my scooter, going on walks, dancing around, etc, but I still need something I can do day in and day out regardless of the weather, etc.

I am guessing the curves trial membership you have isn't an option because of gas?

I chart my progress on a spreadsheet. It helps me see my progress over time. The other day it was raining and I ran on the treadmill (instead of outside) which I don't really like doing. I somehow managed 2.75 miles, which isn't a lot, but it was better than nothing. That helped me get to 189 miles for the year.

Think of a small walking goal if the weather is nice. Then the next time try to beat your time or increase your distance. Or set a goal of a certain distance for the month. That gives you something "to walk toward." If the weather isn't nice, try to get through a workout video, jump rope, or something. Sometimes you have to pick the best alternative available, even though it isn't ideal. Something is better than nothing.

Sometimes it is hard to get motivated. It is safer to say "I can't"-there is no risk of failure that way. Changes are slow. Weight watchers, sparkpeople, curves, atkins, clean eating, etc are all tools but not one is a magical easy solution.

Is there someone at church you can talk to about what you want to accomplish and the struggles you are facing?

If it was me I would leave the DVD in its cover and go for a long walk. There is plenty to see and that should help keep you mind on things, you may even enjoy it

I've never really been into Zombies, so an app like that wouldn't do much for me. Actually, I quite dislike zombies, ghosts,and other Halloweeny things.

I'd love to join the YMCA, but that's VERY expensive. I do have a job interview today at a preschool where I'd be getting free Y membership as a benefit after a month, but that's the only way I'd be able to afford a membership.

I am planning on scrounging around for the cash to join Planet Fitness if they have their $99 for a year promotion again this year, but if they don't then I'm not joining a gym until I get a full-time job.

And I do walk places that are nearby. Problem is, most of my grocery shopping is done 7-8 miles away. Sure, I can walk that, but it's a bit of a pain to do that while carrying groceries.

There are also game apps like "Zombies! Run!" that basically create a destination for you. If you quit before you've covered your assigned distance, the zombies get you. The price for the app is less than one DVD.

And if you're stingy about driving, turn that to your advantage. Anyplace you might drive can be a destination for a walk or jog instead. Make it a rule that you never take the car on a trip that's less than two miles each way. If you need a quart of milk or one jalapeno pepper, you walk to the store for it. Since those short trips are the ones that really put wear-and-tear on your car and usually get low gas mileage, you're saving money and getting exercise motivation all at once. (And if you decide to do without that quart of milk because you don't want to walk for it, you save the money you would have spent.)

Me, I don't have the desire to workout at home. Get outside. Get into nature. I like the biking suggestion. Take your shoes off and walk barefoot in the rain or the sunshine. Fly a kite. Anything, just move! Cut a piece of clothesline and jump rope. Go to a playground and horse around on the monkey bars. Do some bodyweight exercise while you're at it. (I would like to do more of these things myself so I'm encouraging you and me, both.) Intervals, HIIT, Tabata are all great. They are all too intense and demanding and short to be boring. Watching TV in order to exercise sounds like an oxymoron to me although lots and lots of people really like doing just that. Maybe you're not one of them. Like they used to say in the last century, "Go outside and play!"

Find something you enjoy and do it. It really is as simple as that. After you get used to working out, you can incorporate other things that you may not love into your routine, but at least you'll be used to the exercise so it's not as bad.

Do you have a bike? You say you need a destination, pick one (bookstore, church, local school, etc.). If you have a phone where you can download apps, you can download the MapMyRun app, and you can track your routes when you walk, run, hike, ride your bike, etc. At each mile, it will announce which mile it is (1 mile, 2 mile, etc.), your pace, and min/mile. At the end, it saves your route, tells you calories burned, elevation change, etc.

Have you tried dancing? When my husband is at work I turn on some really bad pop music and dance. Sometimes, I dance while multi-tasking (laundry/dishes/cooking etc), but I still do it. It's good for those days where I'm busy or don't want to do a video. And it puts you in a good mood.
You could also use an online stopwatch to do 50second on and 10 second rest for a few exercises. I'll sometimes do 10 different core exercises for 10 minutes using that method.

I'm the opposite, but have not always been that way. Once in a while, I see someone make a statement like I'm about to make...and the first time I saw it, something just clicked for me and everything made sense.

"Exercise should be like brushing your teeth. You don't brush your teeth because you love doing it and get a thrill, you do it because it's good for you and it makes you feel healthier."

That said, I'm also a DVD hater. I can't stand them and find them the opposite of encouraging and motivational, and I've tried many (but I keep on buying them, thinking the next one will be "the one"). What does work for me - and makes me almost want to do too much - as others have suggested, is waking early and walking as the sun comes up. There is nothing more spectacular than my mind waking as my body and the rest of the world does. When I first stumble out my front door, I'm just conscious enough for basic movement (and paying rough attention to my surroundings), but the crisp early morning air fixes that quickly, and everything is silent and calm. The sun peeks over the horizon usually about when I'm becoming coherent enough to appreciate it, and...yeah. I'll push just because it pushes me. I love it. I love it a bit too much, I think, so I'm steering clear of my favorite for now until I get a bit more moderation in my system. For now, I've bought a recumbent bike, and as soon as it arrives, I'm going to find a resistance setting that gives me a good workout and plop down after my son's in bedtime to television or a book, or talk to my husband since we've made a spot for it in the living room to swap. I'll pedal away for 30-60 minutes, hop in the shower, and be ready for some good sleep.

I agree with most of what everyone else is saying. If it's not important you will give yourself permission to give up.

Have you tried running the DVDs in a laptop next to your TV? I am sooo bored by DVDs, but I can do them if I'm watching something good on TV at the same time. The 30-60 minutes fly by.

Here's the odd thing.

When I do a workout DVD, I get bored part-way through and don't reach my full potential, but during the time I'm working out, I push myself. If I find myself slowing down my pace, I'll compensate by going double time. I get the best workouts from workout DVDs. The videos motivate me in a way a walk outside won't.

That's where the problem really lies.

I do have a 10 week Curves membership that I'm using right now. I'm also hoping my local Planet Fitness has its $99/1 year promotion at the end of the summer again. I'm sure I can swing the one-time fee and rejoin the gym at that point, but I still find I get a better quality workout when using DVDs.

I go through bouts of always finding a way; I go through bouts of always finding an excuse. It's pretty much up to me. Fortunately, the 'excuse' periods of time are much shorter these days.

HIIT and Tabata are awesome workouts. And you can modify them to your current level. There are free Tabata workouts available on the internet; you just print out the exercises, get a stop watch, and get moving.

Ultimately, you can make excuse after excuse, but you're not going to to what needs to be done until you figure out how to motivate yourself. If "walk away the pounds" isn't doing it for you (and it would bore the snot out of me, too, frankly) find what doesn't. If you don't like walking without a destination, MAKE one. Or, get an audio book, and listen to that while you walk. Make a goal of a certain number of chapters.

Do JM's videos anyway. So what if you can't do it the way she does. Modify for what you can. Do what you can.

Honestly though. You don't like working out to DVDs. You won't drive anywhere. You don't like walking without a destination. You can't afford a gym membership (I get it, I feel you... they're expensive.)

What do you want us to tell you?

We can't make you like exercise. You have to decide what's more important to you. Being mentally stimulated with it, or getting off your butt and losing the weight.

And stop making excuses.

I relied on DVDs most of the winter, along with taking a class at my local recreation commission once a week. But, the weather has warmed up, so unless it's raining or a storm is passing, I still use the DVDs. I would rather be outside running or walking, but sometimes you do what you have to do. It's a mental thing that you just need to overcome. I switch it up to not get bored.

I have no problem with walking in the rain in general- though I have no rain gear. It's the heavy downpours with thunder and lightning that I try to avoid. Lately, that happens almost daily without warning. I'm not walking in storms like that!

I still feel stuck with workout videos. Walking around my local 7-11 isn't going to do enough and I cannot afford the gas to drive out to a mall every day just to walk around. I'm all for walking around a store, but only if I'm already in the area or it's on the way to or from another destination. I'm very stingey on driving.

I know I can tolerate a treadmill in front of a TV if there is a good show on, but that isn't an option. I also know I do better not working out alone, but I'm stuck at home by myself most of the time

I definitely second the idea of interval training. Push yourself as hard as you can for 30 seconds, rest for 30. It can be anything, running, jumping jacks, burpees, mountain climbers, etc. Check out YouTube. The befit Channel has a 30 day ab program and a 30 day butt program. Both have 3 or 4 10 minute cardio videos. A couple of them are very intense interval workouts. Do you watch a lot of TV? Do you have a treadmill? I am currently working through Dr. Who while running on my treadmill. I can only get outside one day a week, then I put on music. Would an audio book or podcast help keep you focused for walks?

I would also suggest some strength training. You could look into a program like Jim Wendler's 5/3/1. It's one big lift a session, then whatever accessory lifts you want.

High Intensity Interval Training is a good choice for someone in your position - you don't have to do Usain Bolt's "high intensity" - just YOUR high intensity. Then you can be done in ONE 10-15 minute workout. Jump rope (or phantom jump rope - don't need equipment) for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds, repeat until 10 minutes is up. Go as fast as you can, even if that's slow, for now.

Tabata protocol is something similar you could look into.

It does sound like you haven't found your sport yet. It took me years to find mine. Once you do find it, everything will change and boredom won't be an issue.

Don't know what kind of community you live near/in, but here are some indoor ideas.....walk at a local shopping mall (the windows are great motivation to see whats next down the hall!).....if there's a building like a library that has stairs, do a few flights and see if there's a view from the top floor available.....go to the biggest grocery store in the neighborhood, and walk three times around the inside, outer and each inner aisle, pushing your cart before you buy anything....(if someone you know has a Costco membership, this can give you an easy mile or two!!) Airport or hospital nearby?? Go walk in the parking garage or the hallways and add in the stairs......

Even better: find some raingear or an umbrella, and Go Walk In The Rain!! I LOVE to do that! Then come home and make a nice hot cup of tea!! Just cause the weather isn't perfect is NOT an acceptable Excuse Not To Exercise. Humans are quite resilient to less than perfect weather......! Active close thunderstorms are an exception, but they seldom last for more than an afternoon.

Most importantly...get creative, have fun, Challenge Yourself!!

Problem is, I can't afford a gym membership at this time- otherwise, I'd love to do that (same goes with taking classes. That's just simply not in my budget until I get a job, though I do have a 10 week Curves Trial that I'm currently doing). The weather here also hasn't been reliable enough to just do outdoor workouts. We've been having a lot of rain and thunderstorms lately, and I need something I can do in any weather.

Besides, as much as I love long-distance walking, I also cannot stand walking without a destination. I'll walk 5-7 miles to get to church in the morning so I can save gas money, but I'm about ready to give up by the time I get to my driveway when I'm just going on a walk to get exercise.

I also find I do need more structure when it comes to adding in weight training to my workouts. Contrary to what may have been implied, I HAVE had moderate success with using workout videos in the past. I love Jillian Michael's workouts, but I'm not at a level where I can really do them at this point. I just often start off the workout pumped only to be bored too soon into it.

After having the same issue with DVD after DVD, it finally clicked what the problem is - working out with a DVD just isn't my thing! Since I'm home I get too easily distracted by things that are so much more fun, so on the rare occasions I could even be bothered to put on workout clothes, fire up the DVD player, move some furniture out of the way, I was STILL fighting distractions for the rest of the DVD playing time, and I would try to multitask and laundry/dinner/petting the cat would always take priority.

If DVDs bore you (even the ones you like), do something different! Walk as far as you can in 15 minutes - now you have to walk back, so you can't "cut it short". Join a gym. Take a fitness class. There are so many ways to get exercise, that there's no reason to do one that bores the heck out of you.

I have a bit of a dilemma when it comes to working out. I can physically do a lot more than I actually do (though not as much as I actually do). My problem is, I'll put in a workout DVD (say, a Walk Away the Pounds DVD) and I won't be able to make it through the entire workout because I just get so BORED with it. Part way through, I lose focus and can't finish the workout.

However, breaking my workouts into 10 minute chunks doesn't work for me. On the rare occasions I do complete a longer workout, it motivates me to do more later on. I don't get that from a short workout. However, even when I'm motivated to work out, most of the time, I just cannot mentally last through the workout without getting bored- even if it's a workout I actually like.

Any ideas?
