Well the hoop is going to be around your midsection/abdominals like you said, so it's hitting your stomach, your back, and your sides, so all the muscles there: abs, obliques, etc. You move your hips, but the hoop won't hit your hips at all. I'm sure your doctor has either hula hooped as a kid or seen someone hula hoop and could tell you whether it's okay or not. I think you're overthinking this.

I guess what I am asking is what muscles would be affected by hooping, so when I talk to my surgeon I can let her know what muscles are being used when hooping. Unless she hoops she likely has no real idea what people do when they hoop, how much movement is involved etc. and how it affects the abdominal area. My surgery was done in December so the healing is complete, unfortunately a part of the repair has come loose and that is why she put the 20 pound lift restriction in place for the remainder of my life. I do not plan to start hooping until I have spoken to her, but wanted to go with as much information as I can to give to her so she can make an informed decision as to can I hoop or not.

Just a thought on the 20lb restriction. After my C-section I was not allowed to lift anything other than my baby. It was suppose to be 10lb- but he was over that so it was amended to just my baby. The reason behind it was I could pull the staples or rip apart internally and get an infection. I did get an infection in the incision, which was not fun and cause it to take longer to heal.
Go see your Dr or the surgeon and find out exactly what you can and can't do. Unless some here has had the exact same surgery as you I wouldn't take anyone's advice on something that this. If you lift too much you could potentially tear something inside which would cause you to have to have another surgery..... I'm sure you get the idea.

I wouldn't wait till your next appointment and just give them a call and ask. It seems like if you go to the gym, you Wouldn't be lifting more than 20 lbs, since your surgeon specifically told you Not to. The weighted hula hoop though is a different story since it doesn't hit the weight limit, but will be circulating around the area where your surgery occurred.

I am asking here because my surgeon told me any exercise is ok, and yet put the 20 pound restriction on me for lifting. It seems a bit strange that she would say any exercise is ok, when if I go to the gym I would be lifting more than 20 pounds for a lot of the machines. I thought perhaps someone here had the same issue and would be able to let me know that they were told. My concern with the hoop would be that it requires a lot of abdominal muscles to work, and would they be affected the same way as with lifting. I do plan on also clarifying this with my surgeon on my next visit with her, she is an hour and a half away from me now.

I agree with the others that you should talk to your doctor. I have 2 weighted hula hoops myself and the highest you can get from the same place is 5 lbs, so not over your limit, but I'd still talk to your doctor.
I agree. I really don't think it's a good idea to seek advice from random strangers on this. Ask your own primary care physician, the person who imposed the 20lb weight limit, if this activity would be safe and okay.

It would probably be best to discuss this with your doctor or physical therapist. I can guess what the answer would be, but it sounds like in your case you'd want something more than just a guess.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy, bladder suspension, along with a front and back wall repair back in December, and as a result have a permanent weight lift restriction of 20 pounds. I have been looking at hooping, and wonder if it would be ok, given my lift restriction, or would it cause the repair to let go. I used to do weights at a gym, but they are now out of the question, and so I am looking for ways to work on my abdominal and back muscles that will not cause more damage.
