How hard something "feels" is no correlation with how many calories are being burned.

We will all feel like something we're not used to doing is "harder". But it's just because we aren't used to doing that, rather than that it actually is harder.

I just calculated how much I burn from Nicole's Jump rope video if I did it for 50 minutes and it says I burn well over 100 cals more than I would from P90x or Insanity for the same amount of time (high impact aerobics) which is what I would consider Banish Fat Boost Metabolism. Even when I put it as circuit training it would be around 150 cals less than the Jump rope video.

Meanwhile, the jump rope video I barely break a sweat even when I'm trying to work really hard and I don't even breathe heavy compared to how heavy and hard I work for BFBM. I can barely get my heart rate up to my low target zone even if I jog between intervals and push myself really hard for the active intervals. I find it hard to believe that a person would burn more calories in 50 mins of the jump rope video compared to 50 mins of Insanity or P90X. I mean, that video was hard for me 5-6 months but now I partically fall asleep while doing it and use it as a warm up.

I don't know your height or age, but at 52kg, a rough estimate of your BMR is 1300 calories. That's about 1550 with daily activity. If you're burning 2,000 a week the daily burn is averaged to 285 and added, for 1835.

Yup, that'd make around 1400 likely to be a pound a week goal.

Often when things aren't working and I do the math, I find people's values are way off.

Perhaps you should try setting Spark to maintain your ideal weight. I see you're within about 5lbs now anyway. Set goal and start weight the same, and the goal date a year out, and you'll get a value for maintaining that weight. If you eat at that range you should still lose until you get down to that weight (or eat just at the bottom of that range to keep losing).

I've been losing 1.5-2 lbs for the last couple months in my healthy BMI and losing 2-3 lbs per week in my overweight BMI. It's been on the fast side ever since I started losing weight.

In the short term (probably anything less than 4 weeks), weight loss is often far more a reflection of changes in hydration levels rather than fat changes.

Don't put too much reliance on just 1 or 2 weigh-ins.

Yes, that's exactly the problem. I've noticed ever since I started Spark's I've been losing weight more rapidily than the approximate cal deficit I'm creating.

The last couple of weeks I've been losing 2-2.5/week still! And at my weight that is quite a lot. Even though I'm eating an avg of 1400 cals a day and my deficit is only set to lose 1 lb/week. I do cardio every other day for around an hour plus a 20 minute JM video before my ST just to make a 2000 cal weekly burn according to my Spark numbers. Which honestly is getting to be a bit much considering I'm losing weight too quickly which is making it even harder to burn 2000 cals for the week and I would have to workout an hour every day (with no rest day) to achieve that. A bit difficult to do when you have 2 small children.

I really want to cut back a bit on my exercise and the amount of weight I'm losing, at the rate I'm losing it seems to indicate to me that I have been overdoing it anyways. After testing with the HRM it would seem the estimate I got from it would make more sense as to why I'm losing so rapidily compared to what Spark suggests.

Edit: Oh, and this video by JM seems to be far more cardio than ST compared to her other videos. It's mainly burpees, high knees, jump rope, 180's, cross country, skaters, single leg hops, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, mogals, butt kicks etc. Honestly, it is the only video I've found that keeps me breathing heavy and gets my heart rate up to the max zone. I can only get to the point with cardio combined ST moves (aside from running I'm sure, which I can't do exercise outside the house).

Go with the lower.

I figure a "burn fat, boost metabolism" video is largely strength type moves? These tend not to burn very much by themselves, and an HRM is not capable of offering a correct burn for this type of activity as HR is not correlated with calorie burn for it.

HR is only correlated with calorie burn for cardio.

So go with the lower estiimate, so as not to overdo it. I would imagine at your weight that you'd have to be running pretty intensely to burn nearly 500 calories in 50 minutes. That's a very high rate for someone as slight as you are.

Figure most exercise in the 6-8 calories per minute range (300-400 for 50 mins), so the Spark figure of 300 is the more likely accurate one.

And as was stated, watch your results. if they're not lining up with expected results, maybe the other figures actually are more accurate for you personally. Give it 8 weeks of tracking one way to see before deciding if that way "works".

Hi,

Calories burn is not based on heart rate alone, but rather on the amount of oxygen on consumes in relation to large muscle activation which in turn leads to an elevation of your heart rate in order for your heart to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the working muscles.

All calorie calculators, including your heart rate monitor and SparkPeople, use an algorithm (a mathematical equation) to determine caloric expenditure, therefore, try not to get too hung up on the number. It is just an estimate. My suggestion is to track your calories expended using the same method and if you see slow progress (you want to give it a solid 4-6 weeks) then you may want to re-evaluate your situation.

I want to know if I'm doing this right. I just bought a heart rate monitor and did JM's Burn Fat, Boost metabolism. My avg heart rate was 144 bpm (my resting heart rate first thing in the morning is 57-58 bpm). So I used an online calculator to figure out how many calories I burned in that 50 mins based on my avg. heart rate. It said I was working at an avg of 77% of my max heart rate and that I burned 473 cals. My heart rate monitor (that has my resting heart rate) said my avg was 73% of my maximum heart rate. I have the video entered in as circuit training and Spark's say I only burn 300 cals.

My question is; what should I enter as my calories burned for the video? These numbers are way off.
