Hit many a plateau as I was losing weight. Think sometimes it was due to my body just adjusting (BTW that is totally my opinion) to the new weight. Sometimes I think I was getting a little lax in what I was eating and tracking. I stuck with it and was a little more careful and also upped the cardio a little. Eventually broke through the plateau.

I read something interesting on another blog - that is that plateaus are just maintenance and here is the link

I've had lots of plateaus since I started losing weight. Most recently I think it was because I got too slack on my portion size and started estimating tablespoons, cups, etc. I also was having a few drinks every night and it's nearly impossible to lose weight when you consume alcohol daily. I cut out the alcohol, tightened up the measuring, and increased my exercise and I am surprised at how much I've lost in the last three weeks.

Looking at my situation honestly -- I am going through a little bit of a plateau right now myself but I do think it is because I am eating a little more (no right or wrong foods -- just eating a little more than I normally would) which is affecting my weight loss. Fixing that and moving a little more should make things continue to move in the right direction. Also, going to increase the water intake! emoticon emoticon

One other thing that may or may not apply is to make sure what you are talking about is an actual "plateau" and not just normal hormonal fluctuations. A lot (if not most) women tend to retain fluid around their TOM. That can make the scale appear to stand still for up to a week or so but if you wait it out the fluid goes away with the hormones and the numbers will start dropping again.

I found when I plateaued that it was usually because I wasn't eating enough so I'd up my calories and without fail it would get the scale moving again. (Apparently a high calorie day while dieting also releases a lot of fluid retention).

But it depends on the cause of the plateau. Sometimes it's the opposite and people become too relaxed in their nutrition (start eyeballing portions, not recording some things, general underestimating calorie intake).

Sometimes it's just fluid retention messing with the scale (more exercise than normal, not hydrating properly, eating too much sugar/sodium, etc.)

Take your focus off the Marshmallow.

"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. It doesn't happen, what does happen is you get results. Lifting Barbie weights does nothing but waste time.

I have also upped my calories to break through a plateau. Just a bit, enough to jog my metabolism. I have also changed up my exercise routine and that produced a similar effect.

Highest weight: 289 lb
Current weight: 158 lb (131 pounds down!)
Goal weight: 140 lb

Yes, not as much this time around, but in the past. Often I have found that I was running too big of a calorie deficit and that increasing my intake slightly actually boosted my metabolism and started the weight loss up again. Other times I had to be honest with myself and evaluate whether I was putting as much effort into my nutrition and/or fitness as I had been.
