I know this is not like going to a Gym, but I found I love the Wii Rhythm boxing. It really gives you a good work out. I've been doing it now for two days and it's very habit forming. Works up a good sweat. Not being used to it, my body really aches right now.

Like I said earlier, I stopped doing it because I didn't enjoy partnering up with guys...I'm sure it was just as frustrating for them as it was for me...!!

I'm much stronger than most of the women I know, but I'm still miles off the strength of a fit man in terms of upper body strength.

So it does seem a bit pointless to me to partner up with the opposite gender, unless the bloke is less fit or it's just a bit of fun...

There is a good reason athletic competition pits male against male and female against female, after all....!!

Hmmm tough call. As you mentioned, it's an easier call for any guy I workout with because we all know one another and they know I would be annoyed if they went easy. I've gotten knocked on my butt plenty of times, but never actually gotten hurt.....minus a bruised ego LOL

Maybe in a funny manner discuss it before you spar with the partner you are given and then do as told. That has always been our way at my gym if it's a co-ed partnering. They ask or I ask and then we go at it.

I am certain some of the guys when we are odd numbered go much lighter with a female partner....and some afterwards have told me they didn't give it all. I respond with a chuckle and say "too bad you didn;t feel like getting in a good workout", and then next time it is all in :)

Thats probably always going to be an individual preference with each lady..and even then..they might say don't go easy then get ticked off when you do. You never know..
It might be the best bet for you..to avoid awkwardness..to just say no to going in with a female.

Question for you ladies in boxing classes: How hard do you want the guys to go against you?

I really hate sparring with the girls in my gym because I feel awkward about it. If I was there more than just once a week for stand-up, it'd be easier cuz we could get to know each other but that's about all I get in. I'm on of the smaller guys (5'8". 155 lbs) so I end up with them more often when there's an odd number.

Normally I go easy, throwing punches with very little heat and just barely touching them. (I also don't throw leg kicks cuz mine are strong even when I pull back) 2 weeks ago I was going up against one of the regulars and she kept gesturing to go hard. I did slightly, enough that I felt bad when my shots landed as they were now solid and knocking her back, and then she got mad.

Threw a big 'ol head kick at me and told me to stop being such a pansy and just hit her. I have a serious problem with even throwing 25% at a female as that's still a lot of force. Any help?

Glad you have found something you really love!

I used to do a few years back and did enjoy it, mostly...I stopped going because of the ultra competitive and aggressive guys I was forced to partner up with...there weren't so many ladies interested back then.

I really enjoyed martial arts training and martial arts inspired fitness classes for quite a while, but moved on to other things...

I still try and do a martial arts class once every so often as all the kicking and punching workouts the muscles in quite a different way to my normal circuit training, weight training and dance classes...

I LOVE boxing and have been doing it twice a week for 2 years. I even have my own pink gloves :D It is an amazing workout that makes me feel empowered. It isn't anything like kickboxing though (I've done both).

Oh God, I hate it when we have to do cardio between rounds. The sparring is cardio enough. Burpees and jumping rope suck so much especially after an opponent whose been picking you apart with leg kicks

LO Fitglam girl......my wraps are black, but yes my gloves are a pretty pink. It is soooo much fun and the time just flies by. If you push it to the max with all of the burpees, jacks, and planks between rounds, it is an easy 1000 calorie burn in an hour!

Oh it is an amazing workout. I used to love the air punching even at my gym and didn't realize that was NOTHING until I joined a real boxing gym. There are days the heavy bag pummels me, but I am getting pretty darned good. All the trainers are pros and that is even more empowering. I got to fight in the ring with a trainer the other day and that was amazing.

Yes. the black eye convo could be quite fun LOL

Oh I think I could get into that. I like the idea of a kickboxing dvd. That might be a good start for me. They do have kickboxing class at the gym, but to be honest I have been a little intimidated to try it.

I am especially looking forward to wearing big pink boxing gloves! Ha Ha!

Boxing is such a killer workout. I'm more of a grappler myself, but I've been trying to get a little more of my standup and striking up to par. My shoulder absolutely burn even by just the 2nd round of a sparring session and I'm just running on pure adrenaline for the 3rd. I can still manage some knockout power no matter how tired I am, I just lose a lot of the crispness on my strikes where I'm not trying to land one right on my opponent's chin or ear hole and rock him. Explaining the occasional black eye at work is always fun as well :)

I've always wanted to try it! I do Turbo Fire and there are kickboxing moves incorporated into that, but sometimes it would just feel good to HIT something! haha

I'm excited to see others like it and/or will try it. I work out at TITLE boxing club and we hurt heavy bags for an hour doing 15m killer warm up (running, jacks, burpees, lunges, etc.), then there are 8 three minute rounds of either boxing or kickboxing, and then 15m core. Between rounds you do more lovely burpees or push ups or whatever they call out. I have seen several people burn upwards of 1000 calories in an hour and it is actually fun to do.

Happy sweating everyone,
Jacky

Hi JACKY1974

One of my favorite things to do is a kickboxing DVD.

It's very empowering to put your whole body into the moves.
I find it helps build my flexibility, balance and concentration.

I use to enjoy boxercise classes very much prior my pregnancy. Its great fun. Unfortunately i had to cancel my gym membership as working full time, having a toddler and looking after house was taking all my time. I am hoping to buy standing punch bag soon.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone loves boxing as much as I do? In the past I would've said my favorite is jogging or Insanity, but boxing is now up there as well.

I have gained weight recently that I plan on dumping while pummeling a bag amidst lots of burpees and squats LOL

Happy workouts everyone,
Jacky
