I've never done running, and right now I'm not even walking much over 5 miles...but I could totally relate to much of what is presented. My bunions and hammertoe issues are scheduled for surgery this fall. It had to be postponed last spring, because, ironically...I got deep blisters on the ball of the foot right under the base of the toes! Totally my fault...I went for "one last long walk...and hadn't taken time to tape properly...... This next time...I'm going to live in a plastic bubble the two weeks before surgery so I don't blow it again!

Hey so I was training a couple weeks ago for a 10k. I only had 2 weeks to add two miles onto my usual distance, this wasn't my smartest move but it was a goal and in the end I did it. About half way through my training I got the worst blisters I have ever had, in between each of my toes there was at least one blister, I could barely walk let alone train/run. I did some research on line and read that wearing two pairs of socks can help (it keeps your feet dry), Another thing I read was to apply deodorant to your feet and in between your toes before you start to run, walk, what have you. I tried both and can say that I will never walk or run without putting the deodorant on my feet again. It feels super weird and first but it was the most comfortable I have ever been on my runs. I wish you luck.
I just found their website and sent them an email to ask because yes lanolin does have about 400 names (at least it seems like it). Thank you for writing all that in I will find my list and check it. I will add Leukotape to my list of things to ask my doctor about. I would probably need someone to show me how to use it. It is mostly my toes that blister.

I'm not really sure if there are other names for lanolin! But I do happen to have a new package here..... It of course reads like a scientist's guide to all the weirdly named compounds in the world!! lol

If your blisters form on flatter surfaces and can be taped over, I have found that a product called Leukotape-P and it's Cover Roll Stretch (Underlayment) works well together. The cover roll has a gentle fabric-like makeup, and a gentle but good adhesive. Then the Leukotape goes on top of it--it is very abrasion resistant, and much more rigid. I was introduced to it by a PT for holding my kneecap in a better position....then tried it on my heels and the bottom of my foot. When I have it on, I don't get blisters there...! Its a bit more pricey than reg athletic tape though(!)--the pair for about $25.00 I get mine at a Pharmacy by a hospital that has a good rehab dept.... I've never tried taping it over toes or anything though.
Motivated@last I thought cotton was a good choice, why should I not wear cotton? Wool gives me problems, probably because of the lanolin allergy. I have tried taping but end up with blisters in new places. I am probably not doing it right though. Maybe I should put that on my list to ask my doctor too.
Ladystarwind, hopefully you don't have as much curve as I do to my foot so the surgery will work better for you. It must work for most people or they wouldn't keep doing it right? Wishing you the best of luck.
Thank you for the tip about Skin Glide. I just found it on Amazon. Do you know if it has lanolin in it? I am allergic to lanolin.
Squiggle, I remember getting toe socks when they first came out in the seventies. I could never wear them with shoes. Made my toes too big to fit in my shoes. But they were fun to wear around the house.
Dropcone, I do have inserts made for my shoes per my foot doctor, those made a huge difference for me. I'm a little slow and was in my early forties before I figured out that most people don't have pain in their feet every day with every step. It was like walking on clouds when I first got my inserts. I have started taking photos of myself to take to the doctor, the wonder of the iPhone, by the time I get in for an appointment my blisters are usually healed so I don't think he quite gets what a problem it is. I go once a year for new inserts so I will show him my blisters the next time I go. Which should be soon.
If the blisters are from rubbing of toe against toe, then Body Glide or the like would seem like a good solution.
If it is toe against shoe, then more conventional solutions may work better - avoid cotton socks, tape your toes before you walk, etc.

I can empathise !! I have bunions, and several curved toes that rub in odd places, and frequently blister.... The best blister preventative I have found is a cream made by "Body Glide" called "Skin Glide". It is like Teflon between the toes!
I usually buy mine at REI; (about $10.00 so not cheap) but oh-so-worth-it!! One tube lasts me about a month though because you don't need to use a lot. Body Glide comes as a stick like an anti-perspirant, and can be found at most Sporting Goods, and Bicycle shops. They may be willing to order the Skin Glide for you. ((You can use the Body Glide as well by rubbing some off onto your finger and getting it between the toes...))
I tried the toe socks once...but cramming that much fabric between my toes wasn't comfortable! Good Luck!!! patti
PS..I wasn't too happy to hear of your experience with the re-occurrence post surgery! I am scheduled for surgery this fall...!
I mowed my lawn yesterday and now I have a blood blister on one of my toes. Not a new thing for me. I almost always have a blister on that toe. Not a blood blister usually but a blister. I am slightly club footed which means half of my foot curves in. Because of that my toes tend to slide under each other and this creates friction which causes blisters. I have been to a couple of doctors, one tried surgery on the worst culprit, straighten and shorten but it just curved again eventually. I've tried wearing the little sleeves they have for toes, but I just end up with blisters in different places. Anyone have any advice? I would love to walk more but also have arthritis in my feet from the misalignment. Between the arthritis and the blisters it is hard to be motivated. Thankfully it is not on the foot with lymphedema or my chance of infection would be increased as well.
