Take a look at a good review site on Garmin HRMs:
www.dcrainmaker.com/p/product-reviews.html

In particular, take a look at

asurement-works-on-garmin.html

I was just wondering if I could truly take the number from my heart rate monitor as the number of calories that I burned. So reading some of the messages hsve put my mind at ease. I have the Garmin forerunner heart rate monitor and I love it.
