What really matters is to make sure you eat after you give blood along with drinking plenty of fluids. Don't restrict your calories. Your body needs those calories to begin replenishing that pint of blood.
Is this the first time you've given ? You may feel a bit light headed after giving. If so, don't get up too quickly AND definitely don't even think of doing any exercise. You may think you feel okay, but you're not. If you try to exercise, even really light cardiovascular exercise, you risk passing out. That's what nearly happened to me. thought I'd be okay with a light workout on the elliptical. nope. less than 10 minutes and I felt like I was going to pass out. almost did.
I stopped what I was doing. went home and laid down for the rest of the day. If you want to exercise today, do it before you give blood, not after.
The Red Cross or hospital will give you a sheet of things you should watch for after giving blood. Eat a nourishing meal and drink plenty of fluids.

I think anything healthy is ok, but please drink enough water. It will make your donation go faster, and you will feel better. Thanks for donating!
The key, though is to eat it at least 24 hours prior to donating. Of course if you're eating a healthy, balanced diet, it will already include these healthy foods.

You're looking for iron-rich foods, like red meat, fish, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals and raisins. Avoid high-fat foods. High fat concentrations screw up their testing. (So no, the whopper and fries is a bad idea!)
