Check out Fiber Gourmet pasta. It has 40% fewer calories than standard pasta and much lower carbs. However, it tastes exactly the same (I actually like it better as it seems a little firmer) To me this is by far the best option. Shiratake noodles just don't cut it for me. They have a slimy texture and are not really satisfying. Spaghetti squash is good, but not the same when you really want pasta. With Fiber Gourmet I can have a big bowl of pasta with no sugar added sauce, veggies and some turkey sausage for under 400 calories.

I don't make pasta, because it is a 'trigger' food for me - and I feel more deprived with a small portion than having none at all. I might have a frozen meal that contains pasta, that's about it.

I know it isn't pasta, but I find that I can frequently substitute spaghetti squash along with my favorite sauce and satisfy my pasta cravings :)

Maybe I'm being a penny pincher, but I don't think there's anything wrong with Walmart brand great value whole wheat pasta. I ate some of it just today for lunch. Whole wheat pasta makes me feel a lot better than the enriched stuff, but i cant really tell a difference in the brands of pasta. Pasta is pasta.
I'm sure some pasta guru is cringing right now :)

I like Barillas whole grain the best. I also like some of the pastas made with vegetable powders or whatever they have added in, like Ronzoni garden harvest, but they don't have quite the same texture as other pastas so I have to be in the right mood.

Whole wheat pasta is pretty low calorie. It's the additional add-ons such as cheese and butter and meat that make it a danger food. One small box has about 7 servings (200 cal). In the past, I've made a big batch with the entire box, and separated it in bowls. It was quite a lot per serving, particularly because I loaded it with sauteed veggies and added a touch of light dressing.
As for brands, I like Trader Joe's, Ronzini, and Barilla.

I like to use Dreamfields. This is a quote from the website: "Like other premium pastas, Dreamfields is made primarily with durum wheat semolina, which is why it has all of the taste and texture of traditional pasta. Dreamfields is unique, however, in that its patent-pending recipe and manufacturing process protect all but 5 grams of the carbohydrates in each serving from digestion. This in turn lessens post-meal glucose rise as compared to traditional pasta." We really like this stuff and my mom is diabetic and loves pasta so this is our 'go to'.

I sometimes eat Shirataki noodles, they have almost no calories but doesn't taste exactly like pasta.

I love pasta! I eat it a couple times a week usually. When I do, it is whole wheat, usually penne or angel hair. I also use whole wheat lasagna noodles for baked pastas.
Find something you like by comparing nutrition info and ingredients and trying stuff.

SARAH, you can try the Ronzoni brand that someone else mentioned, I've never had it though. I also noticed at the store the other day that Barilla now makes something called "White Fiber" pasta... looks more like white pasta but still has all the fiber of the whole grain. I'm not sure of the protein content though.
Are their other brands that make a product similar to Barilla Pasta Plus? I want to try it, and see what other options are out there. I have had Barillas whole grain wheat pasta and didnt care for it. Its a different texture and taste after trying it with 3 different dishes. I would keep buying it for what it offers healthwise, the taste amd flavor is just too weird for me. I might try the yellow box one to see how that tastes and find something I enjoy.

We love Catelli Smart Pasta our family has found it to be the best balance of taste and fibre, plus there is no grittiness and no mushiness brown rice pasta used to be a favourite but you have to be very careful cooking it or it can become a gloppy mess
Actually, even white pasta isn't all that "bad" for you. It's made with high-protein flour that's not digested as quickly as the white flour in bread or baked goods. I don't eat it very often, but when I'm eating out or at someone else's home, sometimes it's the best option.
I do eat a lot of whole-grain pasta; it's my go-to for a fast meal when I haven't planned ahead. My favorite is Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta. It's actually slightly lower in protein than some regular pastas, but it has 3 times the fiber and is high in calcium, both of which make it slower to digest and more filling. It looks and tastes just like regular white pasta, and when I can find it, it's usually no more expensive than name brand white pasta (maybe 25 cents a package more than generic.)

I agree with the others as far as wheat pastas. I like spelt pasta and it has the most protein as spelt is a high protein grain. I usually buy an organic brand so that way I know the wheat isn't GMO. I'm not loyal to one brand or another, just whatever is on sale! They all pretty much taste the same. Don't get tricked into spinach pasta as it still has white flour in it. Try adding zuchinni noodles to the pan as well giving you your pasta fix without over doing it on the pasta.

Stay far far away from white pasta! It's a simple carbohydrate, they don't have a whole lot of nutrition for your body and are digested very, very quickly. Whole wheat / whole grain pastas are complex carbs and therefore much more beneficial for you... they don't raise the sugar levels in the blood as they digest and the body takes longer to break them down, therefore keeping you fuller longer. Calories are not the be all, end all thing you should be looking at when it comes to choosing what to eat.
In addition to that comment... if you're looking for something non-wheat based, a lot of grocery stores now are carrying specialty pastas in their health food / organic sections. Just take a peek... my local store carries spelt pasta, rice pasta, kamut pasta, soba noodles, etc! Mix it up a bit, try new things!

We go for whole wheat pasta. I like Barilla pasta and there is a new type that is made from veggies that is good too. I get that sometimes just because my hubby and daughter are not veggie eaters so I sneak it in. ;)

"Healthier" doesn't always mean "lower calorie" - the two terms are not synonymous. :)
Whole grain pastas are digested more slowly, preventing blood sugar spikes and staving off the cravings we're so familiar with. They're much higher in nutrients than their plain counterparts, and are well worth the calorie investment if y ou're going to eat pasta!
Brown Rice Pasta by Hodgson Mills or Dreamfield's which has 5 digestiable carbs. I only eat 2 ounces and load in some gabanzo beans, green beans, or broccolli to balance the dish out to be even more healthy. WATCH THE SUGAR IN THE GRAVY (SAUCE)

Whole wheat and white pasta have the same calories. BUT, whole wheat tends to have more protein and loads more fiber... which means less of it will fill you up more.
That being said, I like the Barilla Plus pasta, it comes in a yellow box. It costs a bit more, but it has all the fiber and protein like whole wheat does, but tastes more like white.
As for shapes etc, that doesn't matter at all, so you can use whatever you like. My personal favorite is farfalle (bowtie)... it holds the sauce well but isn't too big. And, it looks pretty :)
Lastly, remember when weighing/measuring, 2oz (which is 1 serving size on the box) is approximately 200-210 calories, and you weigh it BEFORE cooking, not after. I see too many people skimping themselves on their pasta because they don't weigh or measure it until after it's cooked.
If we eat pasta at all it's usually whole wheat and for the same reasons as the previous poster. But really it's all about portions and frequency. So enjoy your pasta from time to time and be sure to track it.

I use a whole wheat penne pasta. I can't say if it has a better caloric total than regular white pasta, but it has a high protein count, and sticking with a half cup (uncooked) serving with sauce and lots of veggies lets me enjoy a nice bit of pasta without breaking the caloric bank.
I love pasta! I'm doing really good at cutting it out completely but its been calling my name.
Is there a brand that you buy that is healthier? I know wheat pasta can be "healthier" tho some that I have looked at have the same calories for the same serving size as regular white pasta. If you have any recommendations, please let me know!
