I switched to basic cable here in NY and it costs me around 10.00 a month now if I could figure out what type of bandwidth I need for my computer I can figure out if I can downgrade that too! When I go to my Mom's for our family dinners on sunday's all I see is my brothers channel surfing and complaining their is nothing on which only helps me feel better about my decision. Now if you ask my 13 year old son he will tell you that I am embarrassing him for not having all the "special" channels but I tell him it will be okay.

We live out in the country and do not have cable lines out to our area. I think we could get satellite TV if we wanted to pay for it. We have an antenna in the attic and get about 30 channels for free. They come in as clear as if on cable. I too have a library with a very good DVD collection. I rent about 10 movies a week and primarily watch them rather than TV.

I have basic cable and when I look at the premium channel listing, they seem to show the same old movies, over and over, and they aren't even good selections. I'm fortunate in living near a library that has a video selection almost as current as when the DVD first comes out. What has been happening to Premium Cable stations?

they'll do the same thing if you complain when your rates increase after the 'introductory special' rate ends.

I'd say it depends on how much you really watch tv and what programs you want to see

We do not have cable or satellite TV at all. We make due with an outdoor antenna. We get the major networks plus PBS and Fox, all in HD when they are broadcast in HD; they look good on our big screen TV. What I love best is the word FREE.
I also have a DVD/Bluray player and can play Youtube videos and Crackle videos and some others for free on my TV (not Netflix or Hulu or other paid subscriptions). That being said, I do pay over $70/month for my landline/DSL combination from Verizon (no other comparable Internet options available where I live).

It's really easy to get them to negotiate...to the point where it's almost not fun. I live in an area served by both Comcast and Verizon Fios and every time the current rate I have expires, I play them off of each other to get the best deal. My current contract from Comcast has their full cable package and second best internet speed for $90/month.
As it is, I'm probably going to dump TV service altogether and just pay for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. It's cheaper that way and most of the time I have the TV on for noise rather than watching something specific.

Anytime you threaten to leave they will negotiate a much lower rate. I pay far less than the people next door for the exact same features. Plus, I went through an independent salesperson, who threw in some extras, and post-dated my bill for a month!
For my cable company I get basic cable services for high speed internet, landline telephone and the bottom 20 cable stations plus some other random higher channels like the Music Choice stations all at $105/month
When I had extended/expanded cable it was $185/month
Since we have Hulu plus, Netflix and Amazon Prime I dumped my expanded cable but my cable company customer service lady was FRANTIC when I told her I was dumping the higher cost cable service.
So this past Monday I'm telling a co-worker about what I did with my cable and he said he switched down too same as me but is paying $90/month because he told them he was dumping cable altogether.
Same cable company. What gives? Anyone have any thoughts?
