I don't have a balance board but I do have a BOSU ball. You can use it as a balance board, basically. Standing on the flat side with the round side down is challenging! Plus you can use it for pushups and other ST exercises. I often use it flat-side down for what I call step aerobics.
I have one of the round black plastic ones. I use it for my clients all the time. The only drawback with it it that it's fairly close to the ground, so the "range" of imbalance is somewhat limited--but for someone just starting out that's probably a good thing. You can start off on two feet, then make things more difficult by going to one leg, closing your eyes, adding a dumbbell or weighted ball, etc. I think I paid well under $20 for it, so I'd call it a good investment.
You could use a BOSU ball or a number of other tools for the same thing, so it's really just a matter of what you like and how much $$ you want to spend.
I don't have a balance board but I do have a squishy balance pad. It is great for strengthening your core and other stabilizing muscles, especially in your knees. Maybe you could find a store that has a demo model and try it out first?

Has anyone purchased a balance board? I really enjoyed stand up paddle boarding on vacation and also thought - wow what a great core work out ... Unfortunately it is a way to cold anytime of the year where I live for me to go paddle boarding. Next thought was to maybe get a balance board. So if you have used a balance board what was your opinion on it? Is one brand or shape better than another?
