I am a registered and licensed therapist with my own bad shoulders. My right shoulder has been surgically pieced back together two times. I know that no movement would mean I would be paralyzed for the rest of my life. If you are currently doing all your own self care, especially dressing and bathing you are moving your arms. There are many light non-resistence shoulder exercises you can do. Pendulum exercises or Codman's allow you to move your arms using gravity and no muscles. There are a variety of no load exercises you can do to keep your joint range of motion. If you have any strength you can use therabands.

Your physician has the ultimate authority for what you can do but..."no movement is worse than too much in the world of therapy". Good luck and God bless!

Thank you all for responding to this topic. I had my left shoulder operated on in 2005. I am using the same surgeon and yes, He as told me that from what he can see in the x-rays that I have bad shoulders. I have talked to my PCP about it as well and she said that when a surgeon tells you to try and live with the pain that he's trying to tell you that you don't want to have the surgery. The surgeon said that nothing is torn but everything is threadbare. He could do an exploratory surgery to try and find something but doesn't feel it would be worth it. My PCP also told me that even if the surgeon found something to fix and relieve the pain, that what he does to fix one problem could lead to more problems and even worse pain. I also went to physical therapy for a few months with very minor results. I will have to talk to them to see what they have to say about possible exercises I could do. Again, thanks for replying. Did the doctor tell you why you have bad shoulders? Is it a result of an injury? I had surgery for a severely torn rotator cuff and it was successfully repaired; I was just released from physical therapy (12 weeks) and have to continue with the exercises to build my strength and keep the range of motion I achieved through therapy. If you were injured and a long time has lapsed without the injury being repaired then it is possible that too much scar tissue and other damage has occurred for the doctor to repair.

I would ask your surgeon if it will damage your shoulders to exercise them and if it is okay, ask him or his staff for exercises and how heavy a weight to use. You could also get a second opinion. The surgeon who performed my operation was the one I got a second opinion from and he was marvelous.

Unless your doctor has said you shouldn't do shoulder exercises, perhaps you can work up slowly to strengthen them. I wouldn't start without your doctor's approval though. If he/she agrees, perhaps you could get a referral to a physiotherapist to find out which exercises you can do and which you should avoid.

My DH had shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff. He was sent to a physiotherapist for 6 weeks, but did not do the exercises at home as he was supposed to, and so has limited mobility in his shoulder.

I'm no doctor. So please take anything I say with a grain of salt. Because of your shoulder issue, none of us are really qualified to tell you what you should and shouldn't be doing for exercise. You should be starting with the recommendations of your surgeon.

No one should have to live with chronic pain. You might consider getting a second opinion or ask about physical therapy. If they don't think PT will work, there's not going to be a whole lot you can do for upper body strength training. To stay active, you might have to do exercises lower body exercises like walking, the elliptical, riding a stationary bike, etc. You may just have to lay off any upper body workouts because of your shoulder issues.

You might ask your surgeon their thoughts on yoga. Ask them if your shoulder is healthy enough to do yoga poses. because yoga could help a person increase their range of motion, flexibility, coordination and strength. But ask your doctor first.

I have bad shoulders, the surgeon has told me that I should try and live with the pain (which I do) because there really isn't anything he can do surgically. I have a hard time exercising for more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time before my shoulders start to give out. Any suggestions as to what I can do to exercise longer without being in pain?
