When I was recovering from really BAD back issues ten years ago, the physical therapist prescribed a therapeutic pool, which fortunately I was able to access at my local YMCA. Yes, the water felt stagnant and evil, but it helped. Right now, worry more about foods than exercise, but do whatever relieving measures your PT suggests. While I have had some back spasms over the years since then, everything has been since controllable. Good luck!!!

I have chronic back and neck pain. I have seen a physio too, and been advised not to walk or lift above my head. I used to love to lift. Weights are lighter now, if at all, and the pool has become my best friend. Time is a factor with the pool, though, as it takes a lot of prep and post-time with drying, showering, etc. and my work life is 12 hours a day. So there is also light yoga that I do, which definitely helps the pain as well, since the stretching keeps the muscles loose, and using my own body weight has less impinging on my painful spots. Any way you could access a pool? The water unloads your discs and reduces pain, while allowing a work out.

Thank you. Walking is very painful but is slowly starting to get better. Walking around the house would be the extent of my walking but definitely a good idea. Physio supports walking but of course within limits because of my pain level. I will try some laps around the main floor and see how many I can do. Starting slow but hopefully gaining laps daily will be my goal.
Ask your physio if walking is allowed. It's usually good for backs. If so, get walking as your exercise. It doesn't even have to be 'tough' if only a mild walk is allowed, but get yourself back into the habit of "exercising" daily by getting changed and getting out there.
Re-forming that habit, along with the positivity and the food tracking already discussed, will really help.

No I haven't been good about tracking. Started again today because I know I need to. Thanks for your reply. I will focus on the food not the exercise. I just need to get back into this and become accountable for what I eat.
Staying positive is probably the best thing you can do right now (even though I know it's really, really hard to do sometimes). I'm rehabbing a broken ankle and I remember how frustrating things were at first (especially when I tried walking for the first time and felt like a toddler taking its first steps). Eventually it gets easier, I promise. =)

Focus on your diet. Losing weight is not about the exercises you are doing, it's about the food you are eating. If you are gaining weight, it's not because you're not working out enough, it's because you're eating too much!

I have been down and out for 6 weeks now with bulging disc @ L5 S1 with intense pain due to nerve root impingement. Finally started physio 2 weeks ago and the exercises are helping but its been slow going. I used to work out almost daily in some way and now I'm going crazy not being able to do anything physical. Of course the holidays have only added to my weight issue and I can't work any of the extra pounds off. Just feeling totally helpless and frustrated. Words of advice?
I know it could be alot worse so trying to stay positive that this will heal.
