From what I understand, whole grain bread is supposed to be good for you. :P You need a certain amount of grains in your diet for health.

RUSSELL_39 had a comment about not using the bread if you need to reduce the carbs. if this is the case for you, maybe make a blt wrap and use the lettuce for the bread and maybe even include some other chopped veggies.

and like RUSSELL_39 said, "healthy" varies from person to person.

" Healthy " varies person to person. I eat low carb, so I would say that it would be healthy.. if you did not eat the bread. Bacon, lettuce, and tomato are good for you.

If bread is not an issue for you though, whole wheat bread would be fine.

The biggest thing you need to consider is not whether it is healthy, but health-IER. What would you have eaten instead of the BLT? A bacon cheeseburger? Well then yes, the BLT is better.

Subway exists for this reason. It isn't very healthy since it is loaded with sodium, but it is better than other fast food.

Just keep making small jumps. Eat a little healthier, move a little more, and focus on small improvements, instead of perfect nutrition, and exercise. If you can attain GW eating a BLT every so often, why would you give up BLT's? They are delicious!

i love blts! emoticon

my blt:
2 slices millies potato light bread: 70 calories, .5 fat g, 4 g protein
3 slices (1.5 servings) coleman no nitrates bacon: 105 calories 9 fat g, 4.5 protein
1 tablespoon kraft mayo with olive oil: 35 calories, 3 g fat, 0 g protein
and of course, lettuce and tomato and sometimes avocado.

since i like blts, i try to work them into my meal plan occasionally. i don't really like turkey bacon or wheat bread. i still use regular bacon. it is just a personal preference-i am not saying it is better than turkey bacon.

Well, a half-sandwich with lite mayo would be more like 200 calories, with some good protein, complex carbs, and a veggie serving. So yes if you crave a BLT, make one up and dig in!

I was thinking of just making it a half sandwich on a whole wheat slice - the mayo (I don't really like mayo, unless it's light.) :)

Are you planning on preparing it yourself? Then it can be as healthy as you want to make it!

A couple pieces of whole wheat toast, a couple strips of turkey-bacon, sliced fresh tomatoes and a big pile of crunchy lettuce... adds up to a nice healthy sandwich IF you don't go crazy on the mayonnaise.

Here, I just plunked it in to my nutrition tracker just to see:

Bread, whole wheat (including toast), 2 slice 258
Louis Rich Turkey Bacon (1 slice), 2 serving 70
Red Ripe Tomatoes, 1 slice, thick/large (1/2" thick) 6
Iceberg Lettuce (salad), 2 leaf, large 4
Mayonnaise, regular (mayo), 1 tbsp 90
TOTALS: 428(calories) 45 (carb) 19 (fat) 18 (protein)

NOT BAD AT ALL, even with the full-fat mayo!

Tip: use measuring spoons when adding condiments like mayonnaise. A big scoop off the knife might look like "oh, about 1 tbsp" but could be double that. Measure!

I love me some BLT, but your gut instinct that it's not that healthy is pretty correct. The bacon and the mayo are not that great for you. For a healthy version, I'd go for a whole grain bread, lots of lettuce (even put some spinach on there), lots of tomato, a couple slices of turkey bacon, and a small amount of some kind of mayo alternative - I really like spicy mustard, but you can find plant-based mayos, or maybe greek yogurt would taste good on it? Be creative!

If its not as healthy, then I'll probably just go with turkey bacon and vegetables. :P

How much is one serving of a turkey blt sandwich? Is it healthy as long as it's on whole wheat bread?
