When I run, on the road, track, or treadmill, I prefer upbeat music but lately, I've been going without music in most cases. If I am using the other machines, I usually read. I am trying to take sit easy on my ears since I sell hearing aids. :)

I run on a treadmill and prefer to have music with a strong beat to help keep my pace. I tend to lag when I listen to audio books while exercising, although I do enjoy them while ironing. :)
I have no desire to listen to audiobooks while running or ever for that matter. I do like to listen to some up-tempo music. When I run with a partner I'll usually still listen to music quietly in my headphones while conversing with them.
I run my best to hard rock - Metallica, ACDC, Volbeat, Five Finger Death Punch, etc. I've tried other stuff (I have very eclectic tastes), but this works best for me. I just can ride the music, so to speak, and can change the song to help with intervals, etc.
If you are paying attention to the audiobook you are not paying attention to your run meaning you will slow down, use poor running mechanics and not get the full benefit of the time spent exercising. Steady state cardio is not the best form of cardio, interval cardio is and you can not do that without full concentration on the work you are doing.
It is called WORK-ing out for a reason.
I said getting fit was simple, I did not say it was easy.
Cardio burns calories, strength work burns fat.
Eat well to lose weight, exercise to get fit

Naw - some up-tempo music if inside or if my run requires I hit a certain turnover rate. Otherwise nothing...

I prefer some fast paced music for my run. It gets me pumped and keeps me going. BTW, I run on the treadmill most of the time.
My weight loss journey restarted on 1/26/13 at 175.8 lbs. My goal weight is 125lbs.

For me, yes, although music is great too. I think, because I get into some books, that I exercise MORE---that is the only time I listen to the books, and so I am motivated to get back out there to hear more of the story.

Music for me, definitely! I've tried audiobooks, but I found I was slowing down to listen. Plus, I have all of my music sorted by beats per minute, so I use that as the pace setter for my workouts.
