I am now on Day 6 and I am down 2 pounds. Woohoo. I am so excited because the scale has not moved in over a month. I had a heachache for a couple of days (days 2 and 3), and felt a little sluggish. But once I got through Day 3, I have had alot of evergy. I just drank alot of water during that time and it really helped. I also was not working on those two days so I was able to take it easy.

Got through Day 1 on it and I feel great. I did not feel hungry at all yesterday. I actually had to remind myself to eat. I know folks want to knock this plan down, but a cardiologists is who came up with it. It may not be for everyone but let's not knock it completely. It can actually work for some folks. I have gotten through Day 1 with flying colors and I will check back here periodically to give results. Only time will tell.

I have followed it a few times. I didn't lose a ton of weight but I can say I had the following positive results:
No food cravings
Felt full and satisfied
slept better
Improved regularity
Never felt better.

lost weight . stalled. then gained back more. Kept going back to low-carb because u lose so much water in the beginning . BUt could never lose more than 8-10 lbs at a time without gaining it back. NEVER AGAIN.

Atkins Schmatkins

I have come to the rather decided and adamant (to the point of being an annoying blowhard) that if a 'diet' has a "name", it's a distraction. If it requires you to restrict foods, or rely on specific foods, it's a distraction. In fact if it's a DIET, it's a distraction.

Now, don't get me wrong. If you want to go out and buy a book/video/etc. and do something and it works for you, AWESOME! I recognize I'm no expert. I'm also aware of medical/biological traits that are unique to individuals that can change the ballgame. But, I do think people often wind up expending energy/money/time on something that they don't need to do.

I can gaurantee you that all the tools you need are right here at Sparkpeople.com. And they're free.

Using the SP calorie recommendations and adding excercise will work. Your body is smart. It will tell you what to do on that path. You just have to take care in interpretting properly what it's telling you.

My body tells me how much it loves food. And how it wants food. And lots of it. It's pretty easy to see that you can blow past those calorie recommendations by eating lots of "bad" food. So, spend a little time poking around the recipes/articles/etc. about other options. I was able to find that I've been able (found it necessary, in fact) to increase my CPD. Chews Per Day

I get to consume MORE FOOD and chew more times in a day, by searching out better nutritional food. I've also found that it's often way more delicious. Instead of a simple ham sandwich with cheese in my brown bag, it's now a smaller bit of ham on thinner bread (Healthy Life, frankly, I think it improves the bread to ingredient ratio) with peppers, onions, more peppers, hot peppers, pickles, oregano, and whatever other delicious stuff I can load on it. It's twice the size of my "old" sandwich, twice as delicious, and 65% of the calories.

And, when you do it right consistantly, there's always room for that half rack of delicious ribs with fries and beans I had on Saturday and still hit my .5 lbs weightloss goal for the last two weeks.

It's a nutritional approach I can live with the rest of my life. Because it includes ribs, pizza, hot dogs, pasta, etc. Sure, not as often. I can't imagine life without those things.

I think there is some merit in "trying something new" as it seems to give many a motivation to get started, however, the fact is this diet is not very good for you and as others have said, eating this is not something you should expect to do the rest of your life. A better plan is to find a healthy, well balanced plan that you believe you can live with the rest of your life, even though you might add a few foods or have slightly larger portions to increase the calories a bit if you reach your goal.

The plans here on Sparkpeole are very good, in my opinion. Weight Watchers is also not bad, though I don't like their PointsPlus system so I mostly stick with their older points plan/counting calories while making sure I get a fairly well balanced diet.

Instead of changing to some fad diet or one that restricts you from eating this or that, try doing something else to get that "something different" you seek. Joining a live club (such as Tops or WW) is one thing you could do, or a gym, or something. No matter what you do, you need to mentally gear up to the idea you are going to commit to a lifelong change. If you do not make this commitment (and stick with it!) you are not likely to get the lasting results you desire.

I definitely wouldn't recommend the Atkins Diet. If you ever watch The Doctors or Dr. Oz show both don't recommend this diet at all. If fact, I consider it a dinosaur. I simply am eating healthy and cutting out most sweets. I don't deprive myself so will have an ice cream bar once in a while for a treat. I definitely limit my carbs from but include lots of fresh veggies, good protein, & low glycemic fruits. Everyone also needs to include that exercise. It's so important for a healthy heart.

I have been on SP for 2 months now and have lost zero weight. Ten years ago I did the Atkins diet and lost 55 pounds. I kept it off for a few years then slowly started eating more and more junk. I am going to try and give it another go because counting calories is not cutting it for me.

any deprivation diet I have even been on only set me up for a huge eat like someones gonna take it away from you binge. Been there, done that. Everything in moderation without going over calorie limit is my best strategy.

Ive had alot of luck in the past on Atkins. Im 33 now and in my mid20s i lost roughly about 40 lbs on it. It was a modified version. I didnt eat starchy carbs or sweets. I kept most of it off for about 4 years. Gained 10-12 lbs back, then got pregnant and gained a ton of weight! I lost all the baby weight and im about 15 lbs from goal weight.

To be honest with you i had much better luck losing weight with a modified atkins diet than i am now counting calories. Im just sayin'.

It's not for me....I tried it for about a week once and it was just too restrictive for me to get through the first phase. I just could not live without milk or pasta. My sister had done it and lost a lot of weight, but she was never able to keep it off. Anyone that I know who has tried it has gained all their weight back, but I'm sure some stick with it. I think that if you're able to progress through the stages it is probably not detrimental to your health unless you have other health conditions, do whatever works for you.

I had two neighbors who did this. One gained all her weight back and health unknown to me. The other gained all her weight back and then some, and has several health problems that she did not have before she started such a crazy diet.. The Atkins Diet is very unhealthy, and in order to keep the weight off you will have to eat like that forever, and your forever surely will be cut short.

As a Celiac Disease sufferer (and I am corn intolerant as well), I can attest that the Atkins style of eating isn't unhealthy .. It keeps me alive. My weight problems ballooned agaian (pun INTENDED) when I started adding Gluten-free replacement products to my diet... potato, rice, white bean, etc... starchy items. The Atkins method teaches me how to be balanced with high-fiber fruits, vegetables, and supplements (hard to get adequate fiber without grains) while eating the foods that keep my autoimmune disease symptoms under control. I assure you, I don't eat sticks of butter and legs of lamb all day! Atkins may also educate you on what nutrients your body needs and may be a great option for some!

there is a reason for that slogan on a bag of Lays, "No one can eat just one" It's because carbs are addictive. I will argue that with anyone who disagrees with me, in a nice way, that is! LOL!
I feel the best way to lose weight is to replace simple carbs, ie. chips and cookies, with good carbs, ie. veggies, beans, whole grains. No matter what type of DIET you go on, if you just cut out anything white, except cauliflower, you will do just fine.

I've had great success with Atkins type diets by eliminating starch carbs and replacing them with non-starch veggies. I also stick to only healthy fats and only lean protein...and I still watch my fat count. I can eat 7 servings of veggies and still be under 80 g of carbs. But I do get starch cravings...that's when I go for my roasted chickpeas.

Only Atkins and eating a low carb diet has helped me. Before eating a low carb menu, I exercised for an hour or more a day, watched my diet, lowered fat, ate the required caloric intake, and i lost weight at a snails pace. I was literally disappointed in my efforts. Low carb is the way for me..it works.

The Atkins' diet isn't a fad. It's actually how the majority of Americans ate before the low fat diet fad diet started in the '70s/'80s. And most of the world eats much lower carb than Americans and have lower rates of heart disease. It's time for America to wake up, methinks. Take a look at the chart on this site:

I suggest you read up on the Atkins diet. You don;t have a clue. It works and many people live the lifestyle successfully for many years.

About 11 years ago I tried the Adkins diet and lost weight SUPER fast. However, I did not progress to each stage and failed to incorporate fruits and vegetables into my diet like it says to in the book. I would have liked it had I stayed on it and done it correctly.

I disagree that Atkins isn't a healthy lifestyle change. As a fad diet that is discontinued shortly after it's undertaking, it is unsuccessful for longterm change. As was the low calorie diet I have done prior.. shocker there when I discontinued it my weight came back too! Weird!

Of course other changes like joining the kayaking club, hitting the elliptical 3 times a week, taking stroller rides with the baby are lovely. As is stress management, yoga, and peer support groups such as SP.

Anything that is intolerable and you are unable to stick to is not great, but starting and keeping it going is a great task for anyone. Anyone who is willing and motivated by any means is progress. Even if it's the bike that you only used for 3 months and is now sitting in the garage asking for another go, great for the body to get dusted off during those 3 months and time to mougle to something else to keep active, dieting, and moving towards a new you. It would be incredible to find something that you will stick with forever. Discouraging anyone to try something that has not been proven unhealthy without strange comorbidities is not nice nor helpful.

Low fat, low calorie, as well as low carb diets actually have the same success rate per the government studies. (shrugs) I see no reason to discourage anyone from any of them. Often they intersect more than most believe. Like the alternative carbohydrate consumption I'm learning on adkins would be a benefit to any low calorie dieter, and anyone looking to increase insoluble fiber which is noted to lower cholesterol and decrease bowel cancers as well as promote a feeling of fullness. Each time someone diets they learn more about themselves. Heck many of the SP recipes I saw before starting atkins pushed me into curiosity about low carb baking in the first place. Much of the low carb can be done low cal, but that wasn't for me.

Glad you find success with what you have done. :) If not you wouldn't be so excited by it. The same way I am excited by what I've found.

Phase 1 is very strict and I couldn't get past it, without cheating.

I have been on here a couple years and have run into a couple members that do low carb and lower carb healthfully. It is just not for me.

I recommend buying the book and seeing if it is something you can do as a lifestyle and not a diet.

I just typed out a very long response and it was deleted as it took too long. I'm really sad.

Just to summarize points. You are incorrect. I'll go down each of your points.

1) If you stop doing what you learned on any diet you will gain weight. If you stop calorie restriction and exercise you will gain weight (the SP lifestyle). Adkins is not meant for you to stop it and you never have to. You can. Most successful atkins folks just move into maintenance (more carbs than before). Some move on to other diets. Going back to what you were doing unsuccessfully will cause you to be the person you were, unhappily fat. Atkins or SP or any diet.

The studies on weight loss and continuing maintenance note lifestyle modifications including exercise reduce the likelihood of weight returning. Hence my presence on this board.

2) After about 48 hours on Adkins, the brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly use the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus avoiding the depletion of the body's protein store in the muscles, Your heart is thus fine (heart = a muscle). Other organs? Fatty liver dicreases. If you practice an actual atkins with atkins recommendations your colon does very well. Your kidneys? Only if you are not drinking enough fluid. When you break down your fat it becomes waste products, that you must flush out. I think that's the only major one I've seen is folks assuming they know the diet and then not really spending any time on it.

3) This " atkins is no fiber, grains or fruits and dairy, just meat and other proteins," is wrong and why I wanted to post. Today I had fiber cereal with dilute cream, blueberries on top for breakfast. Atkins constantly discussed ways to increase your fiber. Fiber comes in many forms, but I don't want to type all that out. Basically atkins revolves around getting fiber instead of absorbable carbs. I have 8 jars of different fiber rich baking ingredients above my microwave proving you are wrong. I eat dairy 2 times a day and fruit 1-2 times a day. Any carbs I take in are packed full of fiber. I eat veggies 2-3 times a day even on induction. the adkins book if you read it actually has you TAKING FIBER SUPPLEMENTS.
Adkins is about realizing you are consuming TOO MANY CARBS for energy that YOU ARE NOT ACTUALLY USING so they get stored as fat. Skirting that line is what they teach you in the meat of the atkins books (pun not intended).

4) Ketosis happens in many diets. And is when you stop using intake and start burning your stored fat. Who doesn't want some ketosis today? We all do. Atkins feels weird because you're in that state more frequently. The weight loss is dramatic, but many folks do not feel like it's a way of life they can continue to practice so they stop it and then the weight comes back (*if they don't segway into another diet). Basically you will always be on a diet if you want to stay thin so start calling it a lifestyle weather it's low calorie, low fat, or low carb.

Why did I choose atkins? Because I binge. Badly. I can 1/2 a pie binge over an entire day. When I go back, it's.. horrible. I don't look gross when I eat on atkins, and thought I would. My husband actually pointed out I eat more like we probably should. Meat/veggie/other veggie is my dinner plate. I eat more regularly. I don't skip meals. I have more energy *after the first 2 weeks* (shrugs) I was on atkins for a year (most in stage 2). And lost so much weight I was able to become pregnant. I went off because I was unsure what it would do to the baby. And am happily starting again. Wewt! Here's to being healthier in the new year!

Due to a medical condition, reactive hypoglycemia, I get accused of eating the Atkins diet all the time. So I read the book. If you follow the plan, you will work your way into a carb intake that is right for your body. I cannot eat white bread or potatoes or have high amounts of caffeine. Well I can but I faint, most people freak out so I do not eat these foods. Any eating plan that is made for the general population will necessarily not benefit some of the population. No matter how you change your lifestyle everyone needs to investigate their own dietary needs. This does involve writing down what you eat and how you feel. I have found for myself that eating 35% carbs, 30% fats, and 35% protein makes me feel best and gives me the best health as viewed through the filter of my lab results. I try not to get hung up on words because as soon as you put food to your mouth its all a diet in my mind.

Weight is the result of what you have been doing for the past week.

I have had 2 friends try it. Both got tired of "dieting" and didn't stick to it. The Atkins diet is eating alot of protein and they shun the carbs. This is not a good idea. You need carbs to cleanse your system. Your best bet is to stick to the SP program. This is a lifestyle not a diet. Here you can eat pretty much what you want, just watch the portions. That is the main lesson here is to eat the right stuff, portion control and they educate you on what nutrients your body needs. If you are having difficulty, look through other members nutritions.

didn't work for me. I think it is not healthy or a way to change your life for good. I have a good friend who constantly goes on it and she weighs more now than ever! each time she goes off of it she puts more back on. I am so glad that I finally have found a healthy way to change my life and eat good solid foods. I limit my carbs but not strickly. And I have gotten all junk food out of my life. So I say go with a life style change and eat healthy, log your food here on sparks and exercise. It worked for me and I have been maintaining for years using sparks.

As a man, I loved the Atkins Diet with all the meats and cheeses and high protein foods. It worked for me as far as losing weight!. However, I wasn't balanced and it led to abuse (too much freedom and lack of knowledge). I kept eating as much as I wanted, for example, all bacon, all day emoticon and I was truly losing weight because I cut out the carbs and sweets. I sadly saw a huge jump in my cholesterol and blood pressure though. Try to change your lifestyle and keep all things in moderation. That is what I have been learning, too.

It's nice to hear some other positive benefits to the Atkins diet plan (i.e. increased energy, decreased mood swings, etc...). Thank you for your posting, as it's helping to encourage me to get back on track with this diet plan. I had originally started b/c my husband's dietician put him on the plan, and I thought it best for us to do it together. Well, we both "fell off" the plan, and have been finding it hard to get back on track, even though we KNOW we feel differently since going off the plan (i.e. bloating, increase exhaustion, etc...). In any case, your message was just the message that I needed to encourage me to get back on track with the plan and start to improve how I feel. Thanks RAVYNN123!

I tried it about 10 years ago & never got past the first two week stage-I always ended up having to restart. It was far too restrictive (for me) & I feel that if I had the willpower it takes to get thru the first steps & in to maintenance, I wouldn't have needed to lose weight in the first place! :) I think if I needed to lose a few pounds quickly like to fit in a dress for a party, I would do it just for that-knowing full well the weight would come back right away. Just like anything else, you have to do the research & find what works for you-for me, it was not Atkins.

I guess you could call how a eat is a modified atkins. I watch my carb intake and stay away form most starchy carbs. I say what ever works. REMEMBER losing weight and keeping it off is a lifestyle change not a diet. Good luck

I am on my second go around with atkins. The first time I did it about 10 years back I did not eat a lot of veggies and just mostly protein and lost the weight fast but learned nothing. This time I have been on it for two months I eat veggies (mostly fresh) at every meal. The person that said that this is mainly a protein diet and no veggies or fruits is wrong. you don't stay on the strict 20 carbs a day phase of the diet for ever. I have been on it for 2 months in that phase but that is my decision. As you move through the phases and lose weight you do get to add so many veggies and fruits. And once you get to maintenance you do get grains and potatoes. The grains and pasta and rice are all whole grain or brown rice. So you can do this diet for life once you get to your goal weight. My doctor told me not to eat any white food. Well that is mostly white bread, pasta, potatoes, ect.. So the atkins diet can be very healthy and I would suggest any diet that you are interested in going on do some research first. Look at the entire diet before you jump in with both feet. Know what your bodies limitations are. For example the Atkins is perfect for me because I am gluton intolerant.
On a positive note about the Atkins since I have been on it the last two months my blood pressure is way down, my mood swings, female cramps and depression are way down, my energy is up up up, and I sleep a good eight hours every night. Even if I was not losing the weight this way of eating to me makes me feels good. My mom is also on atkins and will be in Maintenance part of it in a week or two and she is diabetic and does not have to take her diabetic meds. my son is on it also and has lost a lot of weight and his moods swings are gone. The three of us feel so amazing with more energy.
Well that is my experience with the Atkins. And again my advise is to read read read on which ever diet you decide to use. But realize that it is a life style change with healthy eating and exercise that helps you maintain which ever you decide. I know that I can never go back to the every day mcdonald's or fast food meals, the premade meals in the store and junk food that I use to eat. ick it just makes me sick thinking about how I use to eat.

omg really i didnt know ketosis gives bad breath. i just started the atkins diet last week. its hard but its working.AMYNYNJ i saw that u were 75kg the weight im at now.which diet did u do and exercise? how long did take u to lose that much weight? thanks for your help.

I followed it and lost a lot of weight, but even better than that - got very healthy, slept better, had very little problems with menstrual cramps, and a lot of other benefits.

I had made a spreadsheet listing lots of foods, what "phase" they belonged in; their carb counts, and lots of nutritional info. I collected recipes and put together binders full of information. I was dedicated.

I followed my menu on places like this or fitday.

THEN - we moved to a place that did not have all the fresh fruits and veggies available year-round that we had access to before. Bit by bit my menu added all the things that were dangerous (for me) - breads, baked goods, etc. Oh, I tried to continue, but I had so few choices, and then it just became easier and easier to fall into the same sort of menu the rest of my family was eating. At one point, I was doing both - with predictable results - lots of cheese, fats, protein AND carbs . . . OUCH.

So, five years and 50 pounds extra . . . I'm back to eating better, because I made an effort to change again. This time, while I try to limit my carbs, I'm also focusing on the whole package, because I'm not living anywhere differently, and I know that I won't be able to maintain a good low carb (exclusive) menu in this area, except perhaps in the season when the greens and fresh fruits/veggies are available.

My downfall is still baked goods, so there's where the low carb mindset definitely helps. I know that I could over-indulge in those, so I limit them in my menu.

I tried it. Any diet works if you follow it. But it's impossible to follow that diet for more than a few weeks. Plus ketosis gives you really bad breath.

Don't bother. Yes, it will work BUT... a) you don't learn how to eat properly and therefore most gain it all back when they start eating normally again and b) you can screw up your heart and other organs. Basically atkins is no fiber, grains or fruits and dairy, just meat and other proteins, so it puts your body into a state called ketosis. Ketosis occurs when you are not consuming necessary carbs for energy. I suggest you read up on the Atkins diet and also on ketosis. I'm sure you will not like what you read.

So I am thinking about trying out the Atkins diet and I wanted to know if anyone has tried it and if they have if it worked for them. I figured it might be worth the try to try something new.
