Hey Kylar, I also wanted to jump in and say I totally understand where you're coming from. It's really hard to be the one to order healthy when everyone else isn't - I get that! There are some great suggestions here that I'm going to use too.

Some great replies in here. Thanks everyone. 2 ideas really stuck out to me, both focused around what I would say to the others about how hungry I was.
I guess there really is nothing wrong with going with them, saying I'm not hungry at all and letting them order apetizers. I'd feel far too awkward getting nothing or just a water, but I could enjoy a beer. Coffee is a wonderful, 0 cal idea but this would always be like 10 at night. I normally have enough room for a beer at the end of the day, and if I skip fruit as an afternoon snack I could have 2 and only be like 100 cals over which is perfectly fine for a friday.
The other idea was to treat it like a dinner and say I was too hungry for one of their appetizers and order an under 500 cal chicken dinner. Totally belivable and those calories are going to actually have some nutrition behind them.
And there was a 3rd. The person who menioned soups had a great point. If I'd already had dinner (likely keeping it light) applebees has a few soups that look really good for 200-300 calories and decent macros (aka actually have protein in them). Instead of an appetizer I could always go for that.
Sure, options 2 and 3 may get some comments about how I'm defeating the purpose of going there for the cheap food since we're all in college, but I don't think it'll be overly so. Thanks
My friends also used to do that all the time. I would usual,y get chips and salsa for the whole group to share and eat 10-15 chips. If I was more hungry, I would get this vegetable pizza, but I don't think they carry it anymore.

your friends should understand if you don't want to eat that crap- i'm sure they've noticed your hard work! have a beer or two and leave it at that!

Salad is the only thing I ever eat at Applebees. I find salad and a glass of wine very satisfying when I go there with a friend once in a while on a Friday after work.

Applebees has a Weight Watchers or light menu, as I recall. I would just order something off of that rather than the greasy apps.

My personal thought on this is.... if it's a crappy food choice (too much fat, too many calories) and I don't want to eat it.... I don't care if they're *giving* it away, I won't eat it. Just order a beer (if that's what you truly want and you have the calories for it) and enjoy it. Eat before you go and then in all honesty, you can tell your friends "I was so hungry I ate before I came, so I'll just get a beer."

You don't have to eat the entire thing! Yes, splitting would be a good idea if one of your friends is willing but you could also get a doggie bag. I don't eat out often other than the odd date night/birthday. When I do, I eat half of whatever I order and take the rest home for the following day. Nearly everything you order in a restaurant is more comparable to 2-3 servings.
Another trick I learned is to have something to eat before you go at home. Obviously, something filling but low in calories. Going into a restaurant famished and then having to wait even longer for your food always seems to spell disaster. Have something to eat right before you go. Drink lots of water while waiting for your food and eat slowly.
And if you really don't want to eat or feel all those cals are worth it, don't... just go and have coffee with your friends.
"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. It doesn't happen, what does happen is you get results. Lifting Barbie weights does nothing but waste time.

you could try to cut 100 cals a day for five days before so you can split with someone. but i would say you'd rather have a beer and have the beer and/or have something else on the menu that actually appeals to you. so just say that nothing on their app menu looks particularly appetizing and get what you want. that's what i do when i get dragged to applebee's or olive garden or somewhere else where i just don't like the food. i occasionally get strange looks but most people know i am pretty picky and don't fuss about it.

Oof. Yeah, that's a difficult situation... you don't want the *food* but you do want the social event... and it's awkward to try and have one without the other! I just looked at the menu, and I am feeling pain for you. And wonderment - what could they possibly do to green beans to make them 920 calories per serving?!!
There is NOTHING on the appy menu that fits the bill for sane eating. Not one thing. You're right, even if you split something, it's still too many calories wasted on stuff you don't want and won't enjoy.
How awkward would it be to go out with them and NOT order off the 2-4-1 appy menu? Is it feasible?
Is it possible to go out with them and just have coffee? Saying you already ate/aren't hungry?
On the flip side, could you pretend like you actually *were* hungry, like, "too hungry for just the appies" and say, "wow tbh i'm starved, nevermind the appies, i'm gonna have me a big bowl of chili!" (400 calories and actual nutrition involved). Or a soup? Their soups aren't too bad, seems there are several varieties, all under 400 calories a bowl....?

So it seems this may be becoming a popular thing with my friend group, anyone have suggestions? I checked the nutritional facts, hoping to see one that was decent, but they're all over 900 cals, even the green bean crispers. Anyone who has gone before have better ideas on what to order? Right now my only thought is to say I'm not all that hungry and try to split an order with someone. Still 500 cals of crap I don't need especially since it's not a meal, it's just a late snack and I won't be able to make it until then going massively low fat and carbs to make room.
I'd rather have 2 good beers for that kind of late calories, you know.
