I'm glad the visit with the in-laws is going well, MMJ! It made me chuckle when you said that you were trying to hard to keep your calories in check with your in-laws there. When my in-laws visited in June we were in the middle of our son going through his healthy living group and I was new to SparkPeople so we were trying to incorporate more veggies into our meals, etc. I think my FIL was kinda sick of salads by the time he left. He's not as much of a veggie eater as my MIL. :)

So, I couldn't take the suspense since I mentioned about weighing in when I wrote my message this morning so I went to weigh myself afterwards and I've lost 4 pounds! Even with all of the cake! I couldn't believe it! I am over the moon. I really think the food logging is working for me. Yay!

I hope you all don't mind that I took the liberty since reading that MMJ would also like to move from this message board to somewhere easier to find, I created a SparkTeam for us. I will send both of you an invite to it but the URL is here: http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_
individual.asp?gid=61163 . That way we can just find it in our SparkTeams. Does that sound good? Let me know what you all think.

Have a great day!

BTW, I am willing to move away from this board to somewhere easier to find. Anyone know how or where???

Hi ladies! I have been MIA too, just busy with in-laws, etc. They are headed to DH's brother's house on Sunday or Monday, so then I will have a week or so to get things back in order (and take a nap or two!) before my parents arrive for a week!!!

The calorie range has been a bit difficult with house guests, but I think I am doing pretty well. Usually at the top end of that range though, and went over on two days. Buckling down until Sunday in hopes of posting a loss for my weigh in. :-)

KATRINA, we were streaming Grey's Anatomy all summer! We are currently on the season that began with the aftermath of the plane crash. Only have local channels and streaming right now and will probably stay that way. Initially, the kiddos complained when we ditched our cable, but they hardly even mention it anymore. Watched a bit of Revolution, but was working on the computer and need to begin again. Don't rule out hormones for weight gain either, I always put on a couple during both ovulation and PMS...it is frustrating, but I guess it helps to know WHY. My weight loss will take a long time too, would be June 2014 if I lost 2 lbs. each week, but I know that is not going to happen. Figuring winter/spring 2015 if I can keep myself together that long.

THIA, glad you found the ring! I think hands are one of the first places to slim down...the extremities when we are wishing for belly, hips and thighs to disappear! Your week sounds like mine...not wanting to entirely miss out on the goodies. I think we both handled it well by having the treat and eating well the rest of the time. Sometimes that is all you can do! No measurements here either - I feel like that would instantly depress me...though I know I should do it. Big Bang was our spring choice, only we had to get it from the library because Netflix didn't have it available for streaming. Did Game of Thrones through the library too (I have read all the books). We are currently on the hunt for another show to stream for the fall if you or Katrina have any suggestions! We enjoyed Bones, Firefly and 24 too!

Have a great day!!! Will try and check in more often because it helps me stay committed.

Hello Ladies!

I'm so sorry for my extended absence. Our house has been a bit crazy busy lately and consequently I have only been getting on SP to log food and grab a few points and then off again. I'll get back to that in a minute..

Katrina, if I can't find this thread I go to SparkPeople FastBreak and search for 'Anyone want to get fit'. I think that's all that I have to actually search for of the title of this thread and it comes up in the search results. Maybe we need to start our own group? :)

Katrina - that 3 1/2 hour hike with your family and dogs sounds awesome! We're trying to plan some hiking time coming up soon with the fall weather coming on. My husband wants to take his digital SLR along to capture some of the colors of fall too. That's really cool that you're a photographer! I tinkered with photography when I was younger but then never stuck with it.

MMJ - I hope the visit with your in-laws is going well! My in-laws were here visiting us in June for 3 weeks. They always come for an extended trip since they are coming all the way from England. They are already talking about planning next years visit. :) It's always nice having them here but a bit of a whirlwind too.

We like to watch Modern Family and Big Bang Theory. We've also watched Game of Thrones a bit and I would like to get back into watching that but we never seem to have enough time. We also like watching Suits and White Collar. We watch some Food Network shows and Mythbusters and some Discovery Channel shows with the kids. And football! I love watching football!

Way to go MMJ on the 1 pound loss! That's awesome!

I haven't been doing measurements either, Katrina and I really should. I did go out and buy new bras though because a lot of my old one were getting really lose around me. My cup size hasn't changed (yet - I'm sure it will). So, I agree, I probably should be measuring too for those times when the scale isn't budging.

So, the kids had their birthdays last week and there was way too much cake in the house! And I didn't keep myself from eating cake because I knew I'd just make myself miserable feeling like I was depriving myself. So, I ate it and logged it and then tried to eat sensibly otherwise. Some days I went over on my calories because of the cake and other days I think I was fine. I haven't weighed myself yet because I am fearing the scale. I am going to do it on Sunday to give my body a little time to hopefully adjust. I've been trying to be more active to compensate for the cake. We'll see on Sunday if it's all working. I just didn't want to weigh myself and have a big morale kill.

I was so stressed out the other night because I lost my wedding band! Our son left on Monday for a class trip to a campgrounds about an hour from here. So, on Sunday I was working on packing for him and gathering clothes. I was looking through a basket of folded laundry that I just hadn't put away yet (we desperately need more clothing storage in this house) and when I slid my hand between some clothes looking for a certain pair of shorts for him, my ring slid right off. I didn't realize it until later though and I wasn't quite sure where it had come off. We had been out earlier that day for lunch and doing some shopping. I suddenly felt panicked that I had lost it while we were out. It wasn't until the next day that I remembered about going through that basket and when I went there and picked up a shirt, my ring was lying there. I was so relieved that I nearly cried. So, maybe I'm losing weight somewhere! I'd rather lose it in other places first than on my fingers! Lol So, I've taken to wearing my wedding band on my middle finger sometimes when it's feeling really loose.

We took our daughter to the park with her bike the other night so she could do something with just us since she was missing her brother. So, that was nice to be able to walk around with her while she was riding and just be active together. We've been more sedentary as a family than I care for so I'm trying to suggest more active pursuits.

Well, I'd better get a move on. I feel like I was driving all day yesterday and consequently I need to do some tidying and cleaning around here. I hope you all are doing well and have a great day!

I keep repeating this mantra in my head. "Muscle weighs more than fat" I gained weight. But I haven't been over eating, or eating unhealthy. I didn't exercise the last 3 days, but I did every day last week. So it has to be muscle. It is so frustrating though. I haven't taped myself though, so maybe I should start doing that. Then I can watch the inches go as well as the weight.

Great job MM on losing that 1 pound! My goal is to lose 1 pound a week. It will take me 1 year to get to my goal weight. I've never been at that weight. Last time I weighed that was probably my freshman year in high school and I was 4 inches shorter.

Boy did I have days like that. Unfortunately we've missed out on signing up for sports this fall. So we have our afternoons free. After many years its so very nice! That's one reason I gained 20 pounds here in 3 years. Way too much eating fast food. I had fast food for the first time in over a month and actually felt sick afterward. We do eat pizza every other week.

I had a very nice walk yesterday. I was actually quite tired and sore from Zumba this time, so only did 2.3 miles. I've stayed under my calories the past 3 days. Boy was I hungry the day I did Zumba though. I could have eaten more because I went quite under that day. Oh well.

Today we plan to go dancing, so I'm gonna sit around and be lazy for the day. Catch up on some shows.

What shows do you love? Our show is Grays anatomy. Funny thing is, we said we would never watch it because it was just another doctor show. We were hooked by the first episode! I love New girl. I love how quirky she is. We just got into game of thrones. Great show, but a bit risqué. My kids and I just started catching up on revolution. I like that it doesn't include zombies!

Well gotta get the kiddo ready for school.

Good Morning! BRRR...cold here again. Sunny though! Dragged out the space heater which very nicely warms up whatever room I choose. Went under on calories (way under, 1009!) yesterday. I need to plan better on Tuesdays, did the same thing last week because we leave the house at 4:45pm and don't get back until 9:45pm with daughter at swim, 3 hours of hockey, etc. Had a hot pretzel at the ice rink, but did not want to eat dinner there as it is burgers, pizza, chili fries, etc. I need to plan ahead and pack my dinner...

I could have eaten when I got home, but was tired and just went to bed. Had my healthy breakfast this morning and getting ready to exercise, pay bills, and clean, clean, clean! My in-laws are coming to stay with us from Sept. 19th to the 29th., then I have about a week off before my parents arrive from Oct. 4th-10th, LOL! My mom wants to come out and see the grandkids before she heads to Florida for the winter (my dad goes back and forth from Florida to Michigan, because, even though he retired this past summer, he got another job the very next day!!!).

Talk to you later on today. STAY STRONG!

Good Afternoon! I was so hating on that sprained ankle this morning!!! It was like 40 degrees overnight and, as a result, quite cold in the house (we never even turn on the furnace until November...DH goes out there and hooks things back up). I was cold all morning, then after the kiddos were gone, I left for grocery shopping. Freezing in the store too with all those refrigerated aisles. Would have like nothing better than to work up a good sweat after putting those groceries away, just to warm up, LOL!

I sprained the thing on Sunday morning exiting the house for a hockey game, then it seemed okay and I tried to work out at home. Kept twinging when I moved side to side, so I took it to the treadmill where there is no lateral movement. That worked okay on Sunday, but when I tried to duplicate it on Monday, no dice. So, worked upper body and abs yesterday instead (sore today!!!).

I was able to do the treadmill today, at 2.7 mph with 5% incline. A mediocre workout, but it did warm me up. Not to the point of drenching sweat like my DVD's though! But better than nothing. Couldn't work upper body again today, too sore...

Maybe I will do some flexibility work tomorrow if the ankle overrules the treadmill....

Anyway, enough ranting! On plan Sunday and Monday (and today, so far!). Also, able to fit into two pairs of capris that did not fit all summer. Which is good, because my warm weather staples were looking pretty ragged, so now it is like two new pairs of pants! :-) Ordered a couple of shirts too, 3/4 sleeve length that will work for summer going into fall. My wardrobe was depleted while DH was between jobs for more months than I care to mention!!!

KATRINA, when I want to get here and don't have an email link, I choose the orange COMMUNITY tab from the start page (after logging in), then choose MESSAGE BOARDS from that drop down, then we are located a little ways down on the list in SPARKPEOPLE FAST BREAK. Our thread is usually on the first of second page of that board. Not sure if that will help, but thought I would try! CONGRATS ON TWO POUNDS, so awesome! Sounds like a lovely weekend, we had pretty nice weather too. Nice that your doggies got out to enjoy as well! Our dog is an English Labrador Retriever (a little shorter and less angular than the American Lab, with a more square jaw). He is only 4, so still pretty hyper. Before that we had two Newfoundlands (loved them, but the vacuuming was intense, LOL!). I would kind of like to move away from Massachusetts (very expensive state!), but I think we are looking at 3 more years minimum until my daughter graduates from high school. Then we could move before my older son starts high school...but not sure we will because the whole thing is so overwhelming! Most of both of our families are in Michigan. Not sure I would move back there, but maybe somewhere closer than 15 hours by car!

THIA, good luck with all those birthdays this week, YOU CAN DO IT! I never did find anyone to walk with this weekend, the fam was lazy. :-) Actually my friend wanted to walk on Sunday, but she texted my house phone by accident, so I never got her message. Maybe just as well with the ankle thing. I can post the salad dressing recipes on here later, there were not from an online source. But not too complicated to post. Yes, over in Europe the people are thinner too! Friends of ours moved to Germany and the wife felt super huge at a size 10. I wish I was a size 10!!! Her husband's German family actually nagged her to lose weight, such a welcome, but I guess they all get along pretty well now... The cyst was basically covering my whole ovary, so they couldn't really save it while removing the cyst (which it turned out needn't have been removed anyway!). Oh well, things are even a bit different with one ovary, periods are shorter, closer together, etc. That is great that you were still able to get PG and have your daughter! We would have liked a 4th, but never really felt stable enough financially to do it. Could still do it, but feel too old now, LOL! Good job with logging your food, I have always resisted that in the past, but have been doing it on SparkPeople.

Okay, I am sure this is crazy long now, so I will give you guys a break and sign off...

MMJ :-)

Somehow SP has not been sending me emails. So I've missed a few days. Plus it isn't easy finding this thread. I have no idea how to find it if I don't have an email to link me to it. I've even tried subscribing. This site can be very difficult to navigate.

Congrats on losing 4 pounds MMJ! I just lost 2 more! It is such a high!

MMJ Sorry to hear you sprained your ankle. Hopefully you won't be off it for too long. Maybe you can do core workouts, Pilates, arm workouts, while you are on the mend?

It was an amazing weekend here in Maryland My whole family went for a 3.5 mile hike and even brough the dogs. One dog is blind, the other has a bum hip because she was hit by a car. But they were both able to keep up and my lab wasn't even limping! I was so happy. I can start taking her with me more and more. My blind Border collie is finally getting more confident on the leash and doesn't drag behind anymore!

So yes, I am in Maryland, but originally from Phoenix. My family however is all in Wisconsin, where we are trying to move to. Unfortunately nothing is selling and the economy is so bad that none of the hospitals are hiring my husband's position. So it looks like we may be stuck here for quite a while.

Well I need to get off here and away from this computer. Unfortunately most of my life is being stuck at this computer. I do most of my business on here. I am thinking of just taking a week break from it. I'm sick of having such a horrible headache every day!

MMJ, I'm so sorry that you sprained your ankle! I hope it feels better soon!

I don't have much time to check in today - it's my princess's 4th birthday and our house is a buzz with little things to do just to make her day a little more special. Feeling so blessed when I reflect on the last 4 years with her. It's gonna make me cry. :)

I hope you all have a wonderful day! Send good thoughts that I don't go over on my calories throughout this week since my son's birthday is Friday too! Help me! :D

Hi! Was busy this morning and didn't get to check in, now tired and need to make grocery list so I can shop in the morning. Doing all right, but I sprained my ankle on Sunday...very annoying! I don't think it is a bad sprain, but it doesn't appreciate cardio!!!

Anyway, will check in with a longer post tomorrow.

Good morning! Just checking in quickly before trying to get some massive cleaning done around here.

MMJ, did you manage to find someone to take a walk with over the weekend? Since the kids have birthdays this week, yesterday we went to the store and let them pick out new bikes and then we went to the park to ride them on the paths. They had a blast. They are really excited about the bikes. I was happy that we had a nice active day outside because the weather was gorgeous!

MMJ, congrats on the weight loss! That is wonderful! You are doing so well!!

Do you have links for the salad dressings? They sound yummy. I'm always looking for healthy things for salads.

I know what you mean about it being easy to blend in here. When I went to England to visit my husband's family a few years ago, I felt so out of place! I was horrified. We're thinking about going back in a couple of years and that is some of my motivation for wanting to lose a lot of weight.

That is crazy that they had to take out your ovary. When I had my cyst, they had to surgically remove it because it wasn't going away and it was so large and causing me pain. When they did the surgery, they had to remove my right fallopian tube because it was so stretched out around the cyst. Luckily I was still able to get pregnant with my daughter with 1 fallopian tube. I have since had a hysterectomy because when they took the cyst out, some of it was borderline cancerous so they had been monitoring me and said that when I was done having kids, they wanted everything taken out so that it's not a concern. So, I'm happy to not have periods anymore but there is so much other stuff that isn't the same since having the hysterectomy that it's not a picnic afterwards either. :/

Well, I weighed myself yesterday and it's about the weight that I thought I would be. This sounds silly but I hadn't been logging my food because it is kind of a hassle to do it. Well, since getting the FitBit and having it showing me how many calories it thinks I'm burning throughout the day because it knows how much I'm moving around, I can really understand how much it makes sense to log my food so I can compare the intake versus the outgoing. So, now that it is so much more black and white with the FitBit, I'm really hoping that going forward I will have some good results. It really isn't rocket science but I kind of felt like I was dieting blind before and now I feel like I have a clearer picture of my caloric needs. It's really nifty. Wish me luck! I definitely need it!

So, I'd better get a move on and get some steps in and get some house cleaned!

Have a great day, ladies!

Weighed in and lost FOUR POUNDS!!!! Very happy!! I know that rate of loss won't last, but it is nice for these first few weeks. :-)

So, 7 lbs. down with SparkPeople and 10 lbs. down overall. Many more to go...

Have a lovely Sunday! Off to work out shortly...

Good afternoon! Just popping in and staying accountable. I hope anyone who drops in will feel free to join us!!!

Almost done with week two of SparkPeople (and week three of dieting). Weigh in is tomorrow, hoping for good tidings to share. :-)

Finished 45 minutes and added in resistance bands today and yesterday. Can definitely feel the difficulty increase with the bands! Had my healthy breakfast and thinking about lunch...not sure what I will have, but can always fall back to the giant salad. Just made two new dressings yesterday, a French Vinegarette (sp?) and a Creamy Citrus Ginger (the creamy comes from yogurt, nothing unhealthy!). Also, tried the Skillet Lasagna recipe from SparkRecipes...big hit with the kids, though I will ease up on the salt called for in the recipe next time. DH liked it too.

Hoping to get outside for a walk today, friend had to cancel, so maybe I can coerce some family members. Humidity of the last few days has eased, so should be pleasant.

THIA, I lived in MIchigan most of my life, but we moved to Massachusetts 5 years ago. DH was job hunting from April through August and one of the jobs in Indiana was a front runner, but in the end, decided it was easier not to move (which greatly relieved my 15 year old daughter, LOL!). I miss the midwest though, friendlier, slower pace, but not too slow. Especially being overweight, I kind of blend in better there - every other person here seems to look like a triathlete (which is good, but I am not one of them - YET!). That is too bad about your kidney, who would think! I had an ovarian cyst while pregnant with my third and last, they wanted to do surgery while I was pregnant, but I didn't let them because of the risks. A few weeks after I had the baby, they went in and removed the left ovary. Turned out it was endometriosis and they could have left the ovary in, but it was impossible to know that beforehand apparently. I hope your daughter will be all right, at least you know to keep tabs on her (and to take care of yourself!).

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

Good morning! Well, nearly afternoon here. Where is everyone at btw? I'm in Indiana. Went for a walk with my son yesterday which was really nice. I know he's not going to want to do that much longer when he gets to be a teenager so I cherished him asking if he could go along.

Katrina, that's awesome that you were able to have lunch with your husband. I wouldn't worry too much about going over especially since you did your cardio. I went over on my fat cals yesterday unfortunately. :/ I was so bummed.

We have a difficult time with breakfasts in our house too. Sometimes I will bake some applesauce oatmeal muffins on the weekend and they will last part of the week but I need more options.

I will have to look up that recipe that you tried, MMJ. Sounds interesting.

MMJ, your muddy dog story made me laugh!

No, you're not prying about my kidney. They're not sure what happened exactly. I found out when I was 36 that I only have 1 functioning kidney. Imagine my surprise! They noticed it when I had to get a CAT scan because I was in excruciating pain from an ovarian cyst that had twisted on itself or something. Apparently I was born with 2 kidneys but they think I had a really bad infection when I was 2-3 years old and the left one stopped working. Apparently I have urine reflux from my bladder up my ureter and if that happens when you have a bladder infection, the infection will spread. It can run in families and we found out my daughter has urine reflux too. She was diagnosed with that at about 3 years old so that was kind of emotional for me. So, we need to keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't have the same problems that I do. My right kidney is enlarged since it's doing the job of two but otherwise doing ok so far. I just need to be extra careful with it. It makes me cringe at all of the Advil I've taken over the years for menstrual cramps before I knew about my kidney situation.

Well, I'm nearly done eating my large salad for lunch. It was very tasty but I just hope that I'm not hungry again soon. :/

Have a great day, ladies!

Happy Friday the 13th! Just a brief check in to keep myself on track. Stayed within calories yesterday, but over on fat (so what else is new?!). Doing well so far today though, healthy breakfast and put in 45 minutes. The weekend looms though, why is it always tougher to stay on track? I weigh in on Sunday though, so I am motivated to behave on Friday and Saturday...

No big plans for us this weekend. Going for a walk with a friend on Saturday if the weather cooperates. DH is sailing. Oldest son has a friend coming over late Saturday afternoon into the evening. Then Sunday morning hockey game followed by NOTHING. Hoping to get DH and some of the kids out for a walk, maybe younger two kids can bring inline skates or scooters...

Have a great day!

Good morning ladies! Just finished working out. Started out with Cardio Salsa, but could not follow...I need DVD's where the moves are repeated 8 times before they switch to the next. Much of what is out recently seems to repeat for 2 or 4, then on to the next, then combine, etc. before I even have the first move sort of down. I imagine I would eventually learn the steps, etc., but I feel like I am not working out with all the stopping to figure out what the heck they are doing. I just want to move and burn calories! Oh well, I will keep searching...

Gave up and popped in the other one from the library (my good old Walk Away the Pounds series...only this one added some jogging intervals, so I am sweating more than usual, LOL!).

Feeling good now, was on plan yesterday. Tried the Noodles w/ Easy Peanut Sauce from SparkRecipes. Pretty good, with some minor adjustments, even the kids ate it (though my youngest said it was too spicy...the rest of us didn't notice!). I would add more sriracha sauce next time, and put in a teaspoon or so of sesame oil (for the whole recipe) to ease the dry texture.

Took the boys to their swim tryouts (they are switching teams, old one is so expensive - my daughter is entrenched there, but boys are younger and more malleable!). Let the dog out before I left and forgot to let him back in! When left to his own devices for more than 5 minutes or so, he inevitably finds the slack part of the fence and escapes. Since I was gone for nearly two hours, he did this and headed for the swampy area in our neighbors yard. UGH! Came home to a very stinky/muddy dog...had my older son help me bathe him with my shampoo (didn't have pet shampoo this time) in the driveway. I much prefer when he heads to play with the Pugs across the street, or even the saltwater cove the next street over, LOL!

KATRINA, congrats on that pound!!! Diet soda was my coffee...but I am doing okay without it. I think if you cut out the extra coffees and iced tea, you will find it easier to stay on plan. At least that is how it worked for me...when I had the diet soda, I always wanted some little goodie to go with it...not the case for boring water, LOL! The dancing sounds like a great way to have fun/quality time with your husband (while burning calories!). My husband and I used to hike a lot and I would love to get back to that. We had more convenient (and longer) trails when we lived in Michigan, but I am sure we could find some here too. Sorry about the Panera fiasco, but it really sounds like it was worth it. 100 cals shouldn't do too much damage when you factor in all the days. Love that place too...always get the Fuji Apple Chix Salad with whatever low fat soup plus the baguette for around 500 cals. I hear you on the cooking woes...my kids groan about how often I give them cereal. We just don't have time for a fancy breakfast, often homework needs to be checked, snacks bagged up, etc. Sometimes I give them a hardboiled egg along with their cereal and OJ and they are appeased. :-)

THIA, I would be excited by 8 pounds suddenly gone too! What happened with your other kidney, did you have trouble or donate? If that is prying, feel free to disregard, just curious! You tried a SparkRecipe too, yay us! My goal is to try two new recipes (from wherever) each week. Just to try and get some new things into the usual rotation, expose the kids to a wider variety, etc. Not to mention, eat healthier and lose weight . SIL is doing all right so far...they thought the infection may have gone into the pancreas and performed some kind of test that was negative. They removed two more stones and, according to MIL, she feels loads better and is scheduled for release this afternoon if there are no further complications. A relief for the whole family! I would love to get the FitBit and sync up with you, maybe I can hint around to DH. :-)

Okay, been on here long enough, will check in tonight if I have time/energy! Have a happy, healthy day!!!

Uggh. I went over my calories yesterday. i kind of figured i would since we went to Panera bread. But my husband had a very rare occasion of getting off early and we were able to go to lunch together. That almost never happens. Plus I just cannot resist their mac and cheese! If I had stayed away from the baguette and had an apple instead I would have been right on track. Or I could have avoided sharing that free pastry with my husband too. But it wasn't bad. I only went over by 100 cal and I did 40 minutes of the cardio dance workout. So I'm not too upset with myself.

Now I need to figure out some healthier breakfast options. We do have chickens and so fresh eggs are always in the house. But cereal is just so much easier! Lunch is easy because there are so many yummy lean quizine's and weight watcher meals out there. It gets a little pricey, but it's worth it.

So I am going to try one of the Zumba videos today. I am wondering how I can get my tv out into the hallways so I can use the wood floor instead of the carpet! Ha! I think I need a little more room in the hall though. Oh well. Bare feet work on carpet.

Off to create my grocery list for the next 2 weeks of meals.

Katrina, you are absolutely right that drinking too much water can be VERY dangerous. I really should not have dished out advice like that. My doctor was aware that I was doing that and she didn't have a problem with it. I only have 1 functioning kidney so she'd rather I drink more water but you're right, that advice can't be good for everyone. As you said MMJ, hydration is different for everyone. I guess I just wanted to pass on what had worked for me because I was so excited when those 8 pounds came off and I haven't seen them since. :)

Katrina, congratulations on losing 1 pound! That is wonderful! It sounds like you have a good attitude about your healthy lifestyle. Since you mentioned recipes, I wanted to let you all know that I made this recipe on Sunday and we all loved it - http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-deta
il.asp?recipe=1326428 . And it's a crockpot recipe too so that's a plus. It really was tasty. I added mushrooms, onions and green and red bell peppers to the crockpot and then I served it with brown rice and steamed broccoli. Just talking about it, I want it again now. Lol

Katrina, your DVD selections sound great! What a great idea to take dance classes together! My husband and I should do that. Actually his parents teach ballroom dance classes in England so they would be thrilled if we picked it up too. When did you get married in 1999?

MMJ, how is your SIL doing? Is she improving? That's really scary. Please keep us posted. I will send good thoughts her way.

Yes, the FitBit just seems to be a bit more comprehensive than a regular pedometer. I really feel like it's giving me an overall view of how many calories I'm burning each day because it knows how much I'm moving around. It's really cool. Yes, it was very easy to set up. It comes with a little bluetooth dongle that you just put into a USB port. You have to download their software onto your computer but otherwise, very easy to setup. If you go to http://www.fitbit.com/one . That is the one that I have. It explains a bit more about what all it does. It's cool. I love it. :) If you get one, we can be FitBit friends and compete with our daily step counts. :)

Well, I'd better get off of here and actually accomplish something. I hope you all have a great day!

Thia, I've read and have been told by doctors that drinking too much water is bad for you. Believe it or not your body can drown if you drink tot much. I know it sounds crazy, but it is true. My husband works in the medical field. I have a hard time just getting in 8 glasses a day. However with all the coffee and iced tea I drink I consume more liquid than that per day. I really need to get off everything but one cup of coffee per day and just water and see if that makes a difference. I'm honestly thinking about cutting back on sugar as much as possible. I always feel sluggish and blah throughout the day. I feel worse when I have sugar. I don't have diabetes or high or low blood sugar. i do however have high BP. So coffee doesn't help with that.

MadMarsh, my husband works those crazy hours every now and then too. He has a PRN job at a second hospital where he does an overnight shift once a month. He works a full shift that day at his regular job, then goes over to that one. I don't know how he does it. I had a hard time staying up at youth group lock ins when we were youth leaders. We finally issued a bed time cause us old people couldn't handle it anymore!

Well I lost 1 pound this week! yay! My goal is to lose 1 a week and in a little less than a year I will be down to my goal weight. I think the reason I've failed so miserably in the future is because I had unrealistic goals. I am usually really good about what I eat, until sports season hits with the kids. So I will have to work on making dinner ahead of time, or having quick meals ready to make after the games/practice. That is my biggest problem. I can cook, I just don't always want to. Then spending time searching for recipes sucks. I am a very visual person (heck I'm a photographer), so I will only make recipes if there is a picture to show me what it looks like! Maybe one day I'll create my own personal recipe book with pictures from the recipes I've tried that everyone loved. Usually the recipes I find are a huge success in my family. Thankfully I don't have very picky kids.

I got a few videos from the library. We get to keep them for 21 days here! I got a 5 disc Zumba set, and 4 Dancing with the Stars. Can you tell I like dancing? I'm so uncoordinated though. I can follow when they go slow, but once they pick up the pace I'm lost and tripping over my feet! The thing I like about the DWTS videos is that each dance is set up individually. So you can pick the ones you like. Then you can switch out the dvds and create a custom workout! How fun is that?

The hubby and I have been married for 14 years now as well. For our 12th I bought him dance lessons at our local ballroom studio. We've been hokked ever since. We took an 8 week beginner class and then started going to the friday night socials. We have taken at least a year off now though. So we have bought another beginnre class. It's great because the owner is an instructor along with his wife and grown daughter. They are all fantastic. They work with each couple individually. We are a little ahead of the rest of the class so he is helping us work more on our technique. They just told us there is a newcomer competition and are trying to talk us into going. I don't know though. We'd have to work our butts off from now until October. I'd be afraid of making a fool of myself. We may just go to support our new friends and see what it's all about. I'll let ya know when we make a real decision!

Well I need to get off of here. I spent the last 2 days glued to this computer, working on my business. I need to move away from the screen or I'l have a roaring headache for a month!

Great job ladies on losing the weight and sticking with it!

Morning! Just finished 45 minutes of low impact aerobics. Contemplating adding some strength in there. I don't want to move too fast though and burn myself out while I am just getting started. That tends to happen to me, because once I get going with the cardio, I love it. In my mind, I could go for two hours, but the reality is that my body cannot take it yet.

Under on calories yesterday...was stuck at hockey rink until 9:15, then had to pick up my daughter. Didn't get home until 9:45 and went right to bed without dinner! I had a snack at the rink, but was only around 1100 calories for the day. Good news is, I stayed within my fat calorie range, even if by default, LOL! And my friend was there for the first of those three hours, so it was nice to catch up with her...

My SIL went into the hospital last night. She had her gall bladder removed last week and was doing all right. Then a few days ago, she started to feel pain which got worse each day. Turns out they missed a stone and that she now has an internal infection. They are keeping her there for heavy duty antibiotics and observation for the next few days. She is a few years younger than me and has had many health issues caused directly, or indirectly, by weight. Kind of a wake up call for me! Anyway, docs are very optimistic that she will be just fine, thank goodness!!!

Anyway, I have to say my kids have been great with health and fitness thing, very encouraging to me and always saying how proud they are...makes it easier to follow through for sure. :-)

THIA, that was my worry, that I couldn't even do the P90X or similar DVD's! Picked up two more from the library yesterday, just did one (Walk Away the Pounds, supposedly high energy 3 miles) and then tomorrow will try the Cardio Salsa! A little bit at a time and will work up to the harder stuff. :-) The FitBit sounds really cool...a great Christmas gift (will have to hint to DH). So, it can track moves better than a pedometer? At least that is how it sounds... And the sync up sounds nifty, was it easy to set up? BTW, love your ticker tracking the SparkPoints...more instantly gratifying than my pounds lost one, LOL!

Have an awesome day!!!

MMJ - Way to go on the 3 pounds! That is awesome!

Wow, I don't know how your husband can work hours like that. I wouldn't be able to think straight. I hope he's not doing too much but I do understand his motivation.

I never said but I think that you were very kind to open your home and shower to people you don't know at 7:30 on a Saturday!

Thank you for the anniversary wishes! My husband took the day off of work and we went to lunch and then went to a movie. We saw 'The Butler'. It was very good!

No, your DVD choices sound great! I'm seriously out of shape so working out is a challenge for me because I have a lot of weight to lose. I don't even know if I'll be able to do the P90X when I get it but I'd like to see what all of the fuss is about and try it and at the very least have something to shoot for as I get back in to shape more.

High cholesterol runs in my side of the family so that's why we've been monitoring it a bit more closely. My husband is from England and I don't think his side of the family has cholesterol issues but since moving to the US 14 years ago and adjusting to an American diet, his cholesterol has gone up but thankfully we're making changes and it's getting better again. We just need to stick with the changes!

I love, love, love the FitBit! I love that it syncs automatically with the computer every time I walk by it, it changes days without me having to do anything. It keeps track of how many stairs I've climbed. It keeps track of my sleep. And it's giving me something to shoot for to increase my step count each day. AND it syncs to SparkPeople. Love it. I got mine at Best Buy and they did a price match with Amazon for $85 (I got the FitBit One). It's really awesome.

Well, I think I need some coffee this morning before I hit my water and then I'd better get a move on. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Good morning all! Still on track over here...thought we might have fizzled out, but since THIA posted, thought I would too! :-)

Food has been pretty good the last few days, still going over on those fat cals, but staying within calorie range. I will get there eventually! Still drinking the water and exercising too. HUGE, POSITIVE CHANGES!!! YAY!!! Lost 3 lbs. on my Sunday weigh in...now PMS has reared its ugly head. Hoping it disappears before the coming Sunday....

DH worked from 8 a.m. yesterday morning until 5 a.m. this morning, came home and slept 2 hours and is gone back to work. The man is crazy, LOL! He used to pull off 48 hour workdays back in his 20's, but we are both in our 40's now, it cannot be good for him! Guess I understand though, new job and he wants to get whatever project done.... He is one of those people who gets in a "zone" of hyperfocus and the outside world ceases to exist. I have often wished I could be that way...he forgets to eat (have never had that problem personally!).

Busy this week, with DH working those hours, all the after school stuff (and there is a LOT!) falls to me...hockey, swim tryouts for both boys, swim practices for my daughter, etc.

THIA, hey, congrats on the 14 years!!! Hope you did something special! We are coming up on 20 next summer, but we usually don't do anything. Maybe this year will be different... Good for you getting back on track; I know that "all or nothing" mentality only too well. We have to ditch that thinking...it is hard though, and it comes back even after you think it has been banished. Will keep you posted on my library trials...right now I have a Candlelight Yoga video that my daughter and I want to do together. I find it so hard to fit in the flexibility and yoga-type stuff though...if I have extra time after cardio, I tend to go for the strength training. I think my DVD choices will be a bit too low impact for you...I have to build up my base to tackle the tougher stuff! :-) Nice that the cholesterol came down (and that your daughter is spurred into action!). Have never had the kids tested, but DH has hereditary high cholesterol...many on his side of the family have it very early, as teens. Probably should check! Mine was normal at last physical, but that was 3 years ago. Thanks for the water tip, I may just try it! Had 7 glasses yesterday, but only because I was actually thirsty before bed, LOL! BTW, nice gift from your guy, let us know how you like it.

Okay, I am off to clean, exercise, etc. in the 2 hours I have before kid number one comes home. Did dentist and grocery store this morning.

Good Morning, ladies! I have been MIA for days because I've been busy with the fam. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary yesterday - 14 years. :)

I have been doing HORRIBLY with my food intake and logging. My fat intake was way over yesterday but today is a new day and I'm not going to fret if there are times here and there that it's not as I'd like. That's progress for me - I'm not throwing in the towel on all of it after a bad day or in my case, several bad days.

Katrina - Way to go with trying the hoola hoop. I don't know how either and haven't been brave enough to try for years. Maybe you have given me incentive to try again.

Nannie - congrats on losing 5 pounds! That's a great accomplishment!

MMJ, let me know what fitness DVDs you try and what you like. I am so far down the reserve list for the P90X that it is probably going to be quite a while before I actually get it but I will definitely let you know when I do get it how I like it.

MMJ, that's great that you've been making changes in your kids diet too. My husband, my 2 kids and I all have had our cholesterol checked this year and it has been a bit high. Then my son went through that fitness program over the summer and we made some changes to our diet for the entire family and we've recently had our cholesterol rechecked and my husband, my son and my cholesterol levels are all in the normal range now! Yay! Our daughter's is still a bit high because she fights us so much about eating vegetables but since having her cholesterol checked on Saturday, I said to her that the doctor noticed from looking at her blood that she needed to eat more veggies and she has been! I hope that continues to work. So, I applaud you for making positive changes to your kid's diet. I know our kids needed some positive changes.

MMJ, I know what you mean about having to run to the bathroom all the time when you're trying to hydrate. I find that too and that is really tricky if you're out and about running the kids around. I don't know if you will find this info useful or not but last fall I decided to suddenly start increasing my water intake. I bought some cute coffee mugs that I wanted to drink out of (even though I was going to be using them for water). I filled a pitcher and some water bottle with 100 ounces of water and filled my coffee mugs from that water through the day so I could keep track of it and then I would tell myself 'I'm going to finish this mug of water by the top of the hour'. Now, I know you said that you didn't have a problem actually getting the water in, you just had problems with having to run to the bathroom constantly but I'm telling you all of this because from doing this - from drinking the 100 ounces per day, I lost about 8 pounds in 1 week. So, clearly I was holding on to A LOT of water there. I drank that much water for a while but the weight loss tapered off after about 1-2 weeks. Now, nearly a year later I don't drink that much water per day, I just try to get in my 8 glasses but I didn't gain that water weight back since I try to keep up with a fairly decent amount of fluid but I didn't have to continue with the 100 ounces. I hope all of that makes sense. You may think - ok, good for you, I'm not going to do it but I just thought I'd mention that you may need to have a good flush of your system and then you may not have to run all the time with your consistent hydration. Just a thought. :)

Well, ladies - I hope you're doing well. At my request, my husband got me a FitBit for our anniversary so I'm going to go do some house cleaning and try to get my step count up for the day.

Have a great day!

Good morning! Yesterday went pretty well, but went over on the fat cals again even though I stayed within my calorie range. This time it was because I ate a burger for dinner. Eventually I will get that under control...protein and carbs were fine though. Did a 30 minute exercise DVD and drank most of my water. I find that I do better with 6 glasses a day, otherwise I am literally in the bathroom every 20 minutes, which can be annoying when I am driving kids around, etc. So, I am sticking with six for now, and if my body adjusts well and I am not running to the bathroom to pee all the time, then I will try and up it to eight. I don't think there is a one size fits all rule for hydration!

Headed to pick up my daughter from swim. My husband invited people over to use our shower at 7:30 a.m.!!! Was planning to sleep in a bit and have a leisurely morning, but he dropped that bomb on me last night. Husband started a new job a few weeks ago, and apparently, his co-worker is part of a boat club (where you get the use of the boat for 2 weeks each summer), and was taking one of his weeks now. The boat was docked in our town harbor and his colleague, along with colleague's GF, spent the night in the harbor last night and wanted to get in one last real shower before cruising all week. Anyway, they were very nice and all, but I missed my leisure time, LOL!

KATRINA, I put a bunch of exercise videos on hold at the local library yesterday, some of them are ready for pickup today. Looking forward to that! I have some I haven't opened yet too...waiting for that day when I don't feel like doing the others. Hope things went well for you yesterday! :-)

Will check in later, have a healthy day!

I think I'm gonna throw a load in myself and head out to the library too. What I love about dvd's is that you can do a different exercise every day and never get bored. I have a Jillian Michaels dvd I haven't even opened yet. I really enjoy working out with people because it really keeps you motivated and moving. If every one else is still moving, you don't want to be the only one who quits! When you're alone at home, there;s no one watching to see you quit, so you don't work as hard. But it is still a good way to get in an extra workout.

Good Morning All! Kids are off to school, husband to work, library books returned, beds made, laundry going, and now having breakfast with SparkPeople. :-)

Well, I went a bit over on the fat calories yesterday, and apparently not quite enough protein and carbs, but still a smidge under calories, so I am calling that ON PLAN. The reason the fat went over is that I had two slices of cheese pizza for dinner, in addition to some fresh berries and my trusty water (which I have made palatable by putting some lemon and cucumber slices, along with fresh mint in a pitcher - better than just the lemon, I think the cucumber and mint take away that sharp, lemony edge in the water).

I have been making small changes here and there in the kids' diets as well. None of them are overweight, but I figure better nutrition can only improve their lives. Anyway, the highlight of my day was my daughter saying "I don't really want chocolate and junk food as much anymore now that I am having salad and drinking water everyday". Still haven't managed to win the salad battle with the boys, but she has taken to some of the homemade salad dressings we have been trying (and I have been able to sneak in onion, purple cabbage, green pepper, carrot, cukes, etc., as well as her beloved feta cheese or dried cranberry!).

Anyway, planning to get the house in shape for the weekend and do my workout for the next couple of hours. Will check in later today!

THIA, that is a great idea about vetting exercise DVD's through the library, makes total sense to try before you buy! We are frequent library customers, so going to add a few holds myself. Let me know how you like the P90X ones when they arrive! I am sort of shy in person and the gym is intimidating, but I have been a gym goer in the past and won't rule it out for the future. Kids and husband all belong to the YMCA, which is a really nice one, so it would be an easy step, but I am going to build up my fitness at home for a bit first. :-) Ugh, the orthodontist...daughter got her braces off last year, and I am sure my 11 year old son will need them in a year or two!

KATRINA, we don't have carpet, but do have a big area rug in the living room where I work out, too big to move for workouts. I have not done a group type class since high school, LOL! Maybe if I join the YMCA in the coming months I can gather up the courage to attend... that would be a big step for me at any weight! Nice job on the food yesterday! I love how you can see in the nutrition tracker that a small indulgence is okay and won't wreck the day.

NANNIE, don't worry, I love to read the "rambling"! Five pounds is a great start! I actually began dieting on my own last week and lost 3 lbs. before deciding that I need some accountability and joining SparkPeople. I will have another weigh in on Sunday and hope a little more will be gone! It is fabulous to be here with so many others working toward similar goals. :-)

Okey dokey, I am off to accomplish, check ya later!

Today is my first day back using spark. I did really well staying right on track with my nutritional goals! Even with eating Doritos I stayed under my fats limit. I was impressed. Went for a nice walk with hubby and my youngest. I also tried to hula hoop, and found out I still can't do it. My kids were getting a kick out of it though. My youngest was coaching me. He's such a sweetheart. I'll keep trying. Maybe I'll get it one day!

Zumba is a ton of fun. You don't have to be coordinated. It kinda makes it more fun. I just laugh when I don't get the steps. I thought I'd look silly too, but everyone is fumbling. You may get a few who are realy good, but most of us don't know the steps. You learn them eventually I'm guessing. Even if you don't you're having fun and around other women there for the same reason as you. Remember, even those skinny women think they're over weight and are extremely self conscious. I have zumba for the wii and only used it about 5 times. It isn't fun and if you have carpets, then forget it. You might even hurt yourself. You need to be on a hard surface and have shoes that slide! Take a class, see how you like it. It's cheap. If you don't like the people in one class, shop around for another. There are tons of places that do Zumba around me. I'm sure it's the same in most cities.

Wow MMJ, you are one busy lady! It sounds like you are doing great so far today - I'm having PB&J for lunch - but I've already decided that I'm having salad for dinner. I have to pick up my son to take him to an orthodontist consultation in a little while.

My son was in a program over the summer sponsored by the local hospital, the schools, the YMCA and a few other organizations in the community. It's a program to promote better eating and being more active. During one of the weekly meetings, they had a Zumba class. It was a lot of fun but, man, we were the most uncoordinated bunch of people ever! Lol The instructor was awesome and said that we should just try to do the steps but even if we didn't, at least we were moving. I didn't think I'd be able to make it through the class but I was very proud of myself that I did. I haven't done it since though but I'm wondering about looking at the library for some Zumba DVDs to check out. I already have the P90X DVDs reserved. So, I don't know if you all try exercise DVDs out that way but the library is an awesome resource to try them to even see if you like them before shelling out the money.

Well, I gotta get off of here. I've tracked my lunch and I need to get my stuff together and get a move on. Talk to you later, ladies! I hope you're having a great day!

Checking in for the afternoon, kids coming home at 2:15 and 3:15, then leaving for a long night of freezing cold (tonight is the big hockey night, both boys have practice, daughter gets dropped off and picked up from swim somewhere in there...thank goodness the locations are 5 minutes apart!). Doing well so far, eggs and toast for bfast, big salad for lunch, worked out for 30 minutes. Hope I can keep it together tonight!

MAGWINA, meant to comment on how far you have come in your weight loss journey, that is inspiring! How long have you been working at it?

KATRINA, I hear ya on the walking partner, nobody around here either. Are the Zumba workouts difficult? I thought about ordering a DVD, but I am not too "with it" choreographically, and certainly would not want to embarrass myself in an actual class. I am re-losing as well, lost 50 lbs. once on Jenny Craig (too expensive to repeat!) and about the same on eDiets years ago. Felt awesome, celebrated with a weeklong hiking trip with my husband in Montana and Alberta, Canada. So frustrating to be back again, heavier than ever!!!

THIA, I am really enjoying the website so far too. Used to actually pay for eDiets, this is so much better! I hope we can encourage each other just as well as people would in the "real world".

So, what do you all usually do for exercise? I have a treadmill, but haven't felt like using it. Doing DVD's instead for now (Kathy Smith and Walk Away the Pounds - feel like I am dating myself here in a world that has moved on to Insanity, Zumba, etc.!).

Will try and check in tonight if I can stay awake...

I would love to join in too! I am a 41 year old stay at home mom as well to a nearly 11 and nearly 4 year old, boy and girl. I have some health issues so I'm trying to figure out how to manage that and my family and the house and try to lose weight and just generally get healthier. I feel like I've been learning so much by reading here on the SparkPeople website and I keep telling people I know about SparkPeople but no one is joining yet so I don't feel like I have other health and fitness conscious friends to join me on this journey (other than my husband's support but I agree - I don't want him telling me to get on the bike). I think this is a great idea!

I would live to join in. I'm a stay at home mom of 3, ages 11,12,13. They are all in school. I too own my own business, but it is in its infancy. I have always been overweight and have tried a few times to take it off. I was successful only once and it was with the help of spark people. I lost 25 pounds and felt amazing! We've since moved and with all the after school sports and eating fast food I gained 20 back in 4 years. So it's back to the beginning. I do not have a support system here. I really don't know many people. Most of them work during the day. My husbands great, but I don't want him reminding me to workout!

Yesterday I did a Zumba class for the first time. I didn't think I'd make it past 20 minutes. I made the whole hour! And I didn't even realize it had gone by! It was so much fun. I am actually not overly sore today either. Yes I'm sore, but I can walk! I will be going to a class at least once a week. Tuesdays we have an hour and a half ballroom dancing class Friday night is our ballroom dancing social for at least 3 hours. I an to walk throughout the week. I sure wish I had a walking partner though.

Yay, so happy to have some responses! I was leery of sending that post out there and having it sink endlessly to the bottom of some great message board abyss, LOL! Fairly good day yesterday, though I caved a bit at son's hockey practice and had a hot pretzel with mustard and a few sips of diet soda (I am an addict, struggling to give up the stuff now and replace it with water). Still came in under my calories a bit though, according to the food tracker, so I guess it could be worse...

KIMKING, that must be difficult to be around food all day! Or do you find you get sick of pizza, etc. working in the industry? I thought we could all get to know each other on here for a while, and then once we have a few folks, maybe move over to another board. I think there is a way to create a private group eventually once we get going... Anyway, so happy you responded!

MAGWINA, is that you on the motorcyle?! Haven't been on one since college (rode on one with a boyfriend in the rain and we slid and fell sideways, thankfully not going too fast at that point!). My kiddo's are 8, 11, and 15 (younger two are sons, oldest is my daughter).

Well, let me know if that works for you, staying on here and gathering up a few more people. I figured we could all help each other on this journey to health and fitness...

Off to make breakfast for the boys and hit the bus stop. Have a great day!

Welcome to Spark People. I would be interested in getting fit and socializing. I am a married mother of two. I work full time and my husband and I own a small pizza shop. Sometimes it is hard to find time for myself but I do what I have to do. My weight loss goal right now is 50 pounds but I have more than that to lose. Let me know if you want to chat and get to know each other. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi all, I am new to SparkPeople as of September 1st 2013. Trying to lose 78 lbs., get fit, and have a little fun besides.

A bit about me: I am 42 years old, female, married, 3 kids, currently home with them, but considering easing back into the workforce with a part time job. I am not feeling too confident at this weight, so hoping to get into better shape while brushing up on my computer skills and possibly taking a few classes before buying some clothes and beginning the dreaded interview process. Current interests include walking, reading, chauffeuring kids around, timing at endless swim meets and the occasional movie or hanging out with friends and family. Hoping to expand into hiking and other fun stuff as I go along here...

Anyway, looking for those with similar goals, interests, desires, whatever. Really, just anybody who not only wants to brag about "on plan" days and exercise minutes, but also to jaw about family, work, vacations, and life in general. So, friends I guess, but friends who have fitness and weight loss goals in common! emoticon

Reply if interested and we can go from there!
