When I do the 30 Day Shred level 1 I burn 500+ calories. On average I usually burn about 500 cals/half hour of medium intensity exercise. You may want to look into the HRM a bit more...maybe a wrong setting or something? I use a Polar F6 HRM....also on average most people burn roughly about 100 cals per 1 mile of walking so if you figure how long it takes you to walk 1 mile it most likely would be around 20 minutes or so (based on 3 mph speed) I would think you would burn more with uphill running...just my two cents....

I do Zumba for one hour four times a week and burn depending on how fast the song is 425 to 545 in calories. I also weight train 2 days a week and try to walk 15 miles a week and I work out with a trainer one hour a week and burn 700 calories with my trainer.

Oh god...ok so after a long hiatus from posting my workouts I have a few updates...

1. I got the Mio HRM and so far I could not be happier. I do feel like it underestimates my calorie burn but somehow I think that might be tied to something else. It has been encouraging me to get my butt off the couch and do both my Jillian Michaels video as well as 20 minutes of solid uphill running/walking. That being said, I did that today and only managed to burn 229 calories. Almost pathetic considering I am just now getting out and sweating bullets! Could there be something wrong with the hrm?

2. I've been out with my boyfriend and friends for the last 2 weekends and this coming weekend I'll be in new york so god only knows how good or bad this diet of mine is going to be. That being said, I have been good about trying to stay away from fatty goods and high calorie counts so hopefully one day I'll see the results.

3. Meript...Please don't be hard on yourself. Definitely do find a good way to motivate yourself so you don't avoid workouts. I started running by picking a time when my favorite show was on or when there was a favorite rerun and i would go to the gym, tune in to that channel and just do what i could on the treadmill for that entire time. If the show was short...id just force myself to run during that time. You'll figure out what you can and cant handle but dont worry. Just because it feels hard it, doesnt mean you need to feel discouraged. Instead, think that the harder it feels, the better you will begin to look (of course, dont take that to the extreme of injury either!).

4. I need help reaching those high calorie count workouts everyone here is raving about. Weights alone doesn't seem to be doing it for me. So any suggestions? Any other videos or routines anyone can suggest that would allow me to reach at least 300 calories per workout? I also don't have the time to be on a treadmill for an hour although i could make time for it if that was the only way to burn so many calories.

5. Thanks so much for joining in and helping! I really am glad everyone has made the effort to respond to this thread! I've found great ideas for workouts and more often than not, I try them out little by little and find modifications that cater well to my routine. So thanks again everyone!

OH! Before I forget....my workout today was the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred (which apparently isn't much of a shred) and that burned 80 calories and 21 minutes on the treadmill doing the hill circuit at level 7 with a max incline of 12 and a max speed of 4.5 and that burned 149.

Hi everyone! I am just checking out this thread that KJE recommended to me. I haven't read through it yet but I am hoping everyone can keep me on track. Motivation is my big issue. I am an Athletic Trainer and Exercise Physiologist....so I have the know-how....just not the get up and do it!! I am going to peruse the thread now!! Can't wait to get to know everyone...

Hey Guys, today i did 20 minutes o power yoga from yogadownload.com... but since i HATE YOGA it wasn't the best... (im trying to push through because of its part of the shape up im doing) afterwards i did 20 light minutes on the elliptical followed by 40 minutes of HIIT (high intensity interval training) i did sprints for 30 seconds at intensity 9 and then 90 seconds of recovers at 5.5 intensity. I warmed up for 5 minutes, did the intervals for 30 minutess and cooled down for 5. needless to say my legs are super tired! bit i am taking tm as a rest day :)

I was able to work out this morning but I didn't get my 10,000 steps in so I worked out a bit when I came home from work too.

Strength training: 45 minutes
Walk at home video: 35 minutes, calories burned 475
Treadmill: 25 minutes, calories burned 250

Hey Guys, I would love to join in for some buddies and motivation! I don't have many friends that Eat healthy OR workout so it would be nice to have some people to talk about it with! It would also be nice to have some more spark buddies!

Today i did a 40 min workout from a 4 week summer shape up im trying out, i am on day 4! today i did:

Day 4: Strength (home or gym)

-5 minutes easy/moderate cardio of choice to warm up

-Lunge and Lift

-Plie Squat (do 10-15 full plie squats and then hold it down and do 10-15 pulses for each set)

-Pilates side leg lift (lift top leg up and down 10 times—if you’re feeling feisty, add 10 circles to the front and 10 circles to the back)

-Stability ball hamstring curl (if you’ve done these before and they’re getting easier, try it with one leg at a time)

-Frog Crunch

-Bosu calf raise (can be done on a stair instead with heels hanging off the edge)- for more of a challenge: one leg at a time, or hold some dumbbells

-Leg extension (at home version- add ankle weights for more of a challenge)

-Prone glute lift

-20-30 minutes moderate cardio of choice

-Stretch

I did 12 reps of each strength move 3 times over. My legs are sore already :)

Good job at the amusement park, with your exercising and the weight loss! Despite the incident with the teenage punk at the ride, you really showed that temptation who's boss.

Which inspired me to get plenty of exercise in myself today. So here is my workout rundown for the day:

Walk 55 min
Walk with 5% incline 18 min
Circuit 20 min
Total calories burned - 958

Tomorrow is my day off from working out... Hope everyone else is having a good weekend!

Well all things considered I did not do too badly at the amusement park yesterday. I was by no means "good" but did not eat as much as I know I would of in the past. I also put about 22,000 steps on my pedometer.

OH!!!! and a humiliating thing happened while I was there. A teen that was watching people come in line to get on one of the rides asked me to set into a seat they had at the start of the line TO SEE IF I WOULD FIT. Yes this happened in front of people I knew and the entire rest of the people getting in line. The seat belt did make it over my lap (just barely) but I was totally embarrassed. It sucked!!!

On the bright side I did weigh in today and lost 4.4 (Now keep in mind that I gained 3.8 last week so I was able to take that off plus 0.6 so I was VERY happy about that.)

Well today my exercise was:
-Kickboxing for one hour (I bet you can guess who's face was on that punching bag today.) Burned per SP 870 calories.
-Walk in the park for an hour and completed a little over three miles. Burned 751 calories.

Tomorrow will be my day of rest. I will also be plotting my revenge against the teen that made me get in that chair. Hahaha. Actually I do not envy that kid his job, it has to be hard, but I was still pissed.

Well here was my exercise for the day.
Leslie Sansone walk at home video for 65 minutes and burned 827 calories.

Tomorrow we are going to Cedar Point. I just know that I will partake in park food but I am going to try to not just go crazy. I will do some strength training in the morning and walk all day long so we shall see............ Have a great Friday everyone.

By the way, MERIPT, I think you are definitely being too hard on yourself. If you are a perfectionist, it might be good to start with very small, very attainable goals. Like rather than making it a goal to exercise for 30 minutes, just try 5. Or instead of worrying about the weight you lose, make it a goal to incorporate one more veggie into your day. You might need to build some general habits first so that your goals feel more attainable.

You CAN do it, just take it one step at a time!!

Ack, it's been awhile since I posted. I was visiting family over the weekend, and my eating and exercising was not on par. But that's ok, it wasn't too bad and I got back on track on Monday...

I did work out this morning. I did step aerobics for 50 minutes. Per my exercise watch I bruned 767 calories. I went over my calories a bit again but per my calorie differential report here on SP I still burned more than I ate today.

Hi all,
Just checking in. I have recovered a bit from my Saturday weigh in. I went to kickboxing tonight but was dragging a bit due to getting a cold. I went over my calories today a bit but.........you'll have that. Not much else going on. Have a great Wednesday everyone.

Oh, you will really love the heart rate monitor once you get it. Like the pedometer it's a real motivator.

I am really struggling with motivation. I keep telling myself that today is the day to start working out, and then I keep not doing it. I think I keep psyching myself out because I feel like I don't do it because I know its going to be REALLY REALLY hard. Part of me wonders if I am starting too much too soon, like I have a plan in my mind that I am following from couch to 5k, but is that too much at once? How do I know? Also, I feel like I am so hard on myself and such a perfectionist that if I start out doing something, and I don't reach my workout goal that day, I will be so down on myself and it will be hard to continue and I will eat for emotional reasons. Anyway, no one really needs to reply, I just mainly wanted to vent and whatever.

So eating habits this weekend were great! Eating habits yesterday...not so much. Also...didn't workout at all so I must get back into it...I'm going to order an HRM from amazon as soon as I get home and then I'll hopefully be way more motivated to see the calorie counts just skyrocket ... and of course the pounds shed away :)

The next shift will be here in 45 minutes!!! I've done really well with my food today nad stayed on track. The test will bee when I get home. I am usually so strung out and wanting comfort food and TV after 12 hours. Then I'm back again tomorrow. Oh!!!! I weighed today and am down 2 more pounds. Yeah! emoticon

OK, I'm back from kickboxing and that bag took a beating. The class is an hour long. I still needed to get over the shock of my weigh in this morning so after class I went for a three mile walk in the park. I was able to do the three miles in 53 minutes. I listened to my iPod and walked to the beat of the music. I don't know if it was being outside or the music but I was much less surly when I was done. I walked a short while longer to cool down so I was in the park for about an hour.
-Kickboxing class 875 calories burned (per SP)
-Hour long walk in the park, 820 calories burned (per my exercise watch)
Total burned 1695. WOW! No wonder I'm tired.

Point me to the nearest cheeseburger!! Ha! Kidding. emoticon

OMG!!!!!

I got on the scale this morning and was up 3.8 lbs! Although mentally I know that I ate horribly yesterday and it may be mostly water retention (it is right before my period too) I AM SO VERY DISAPPOINTED in myself. It's hard not to let this get me down. When I go to kickboxing class this morning I will imagine my the poor choices I made yesterday are on the punching bag and they are going to get a beating!!!! emoticon

I worked out this morning and thank goodness because I went on a work retreat today. I had excellent intentions on only having a couple of treats during the retreat but half a muffin, Doritos, and 5 brownies later, I was sick to my stomach. I guess in a sick and twisted way that is progress. Several months ago this type of eating would not have bothered me at all. But now that I have been eating healthy it REALLY did upset my stomach.

On the positive side I ate some fruit and drank all my water for the day already.

My workout this morning was strength and cardio. I use the strength program that SP plans for me although I change a couple of the exercises. I work all the major muscle groups and do two sets of 16-20 reps. It takes me about 30-40 minutes to complete. For my cardio I did a Leslie Sansone Walk at Home video. I went for 45 minutes and according to my watch I burned 607 calories (on the cardio only).

I will go to kickboxing tomorrow and may do some walking because I am obsessed with getting at least 10,000 steps in every day. (FYI I love my pedometer. It is the ORMON and I got that on Amazon too. It will also give you a calorie count based ONLY on the steps you take after you enter your information.) But Sunday I try to not do anything because by then my joints need a well deserved rest.

I will not be working out much this weekend either. I will be working from 0730 to 2000. That is 25 hours out of 48. Way too many. Anyway, I'll at least do my 10 minutes and sticking to the diet should be easy. Hope you all have a great weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have been looking at some of the heart rate monitors but found them overpriced but I'll definitely look into these!

I'm going to confess that this weekend I won't be working out very much but I'm going to be checking the thread anyways just for motivation. As to the amount of calories burned, I really hope I can burn as much as you all because I seem to have hit a plateau where I haven't lost a pound at all!

Wii rhythmic boxing 15 minutes
Calories burned: 527

Thanks for the tip on MIO. I have been thinking of getting something, but the idea of wearing a chest strap always made me kinda uncomfortable... I'll have to check that out!

Hello there everyone. I would like to join your group too.

If you want a good investment to see how many calories you are burning try a MIO exercise watch. I found mine on Amazon. You don't have to wear a chest strap you use your fingers to get your heart rate. Before you start you enter the following into the watch: resting heart rate, age, gender, and weight. With all that information I feel this is the most accurate way to get a calorie count. (The directions with the watch will walk you through all you do to set it up.) And the one I got came with a pink band. BONUS!

Today I did a mile using a Leslie Sansone video and then in the evening I went to Kickboxing class. I burned 1010 calories. The kickboxing really burns the calories.

I have really been watching what I eat since Jan. 1st of this year (again). But for some reason it seems to be working this time. I have been on SP since mid-March. So far I have lost 25.8 lbs. Being honest and tracking everything on line has really helped.

I don't have much on my spark page so I need to work on that.

I have not really joined any other groups and you all sounded so very nice and thought this might be a nice fit for me.

So it was so nice to "meet" you all and I like the idea of checking in on a daily basis to report our workouts.

Ok so today's workout was the following:
Jilian Michaels 30 Day Shred (about 200 calories)

Circuit Training: (I'm gonna go ahead and say this is another 200 since SP isn't giving me the calorie count...or more like I can't find it so I might be overestimating but I won't be overeating tonight to make up for it)

1. Chest press 10-15 reps
2. Chest flies 10 reps
3. Dumbbell curl into overhead press 20 reps
4. Repeat 1-3
5. 100 punches (50 with 5 pound weights, 50 without)
6. 10 back extensions
7. Reverse flies 10 reps
8. Calf raises with upright rows 20 reps
9. 20 modified push-ups

I walked/ran 3 miles today. That is really good for me. This is the second day I've done it this week. I did 7 1 minute sprints!! Gotta start somewhere. Now the challenge is to not eat in front of the TV tonight. That is my downfall. Nighttime eating. emoticon I hope everyone had a great day.

Yeah, more than half of the calories is from my walk, but the circuit does burn a good portion. Granted, my calories burned comes from Spark People, but given the rate at which I lose weight when I do the circuit 2-3 times per week, I'd say it's pretty accurate!

I tried Jillian's 30 Day Shred, but found that a lot of it was really tough on my knees. So I have put it on the shelf for now and will come back to it when my knees get stronger.

Yesterday I did the Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred which is a 20 minute workout and I burned about 200 calories.

Today I'm going to try your circuit training workout right after a run and see how it goes!

Works for me!

I'll go ahead and start with what I did today:

Walked 3.1 miles
Circuit Training for 20 minutes
Calories burned: 787

By the way, for those of you who are looking for a good workout that incorporates cardio and strength training, here's what is involved in my circuit:

1. Chest press 10-15 reps
2. Chest flies 10 reps
3. Dumbbell curl into overhead press 20 reps
4. Repeat 1-3
5. 100 punches
6. 20-25 crunches
7. 10 back extensions
8. Reverse flies 10 reps
9. Calf raises with upright rows 20 reps
10. Repeat 8-9
11. Dance as wildly as you can for 2-3 minutes to keep your heart rate up
12. 20 modified push-ups
13. 20-30 bridges
14. 20 lying adductions on each leg

I do all the strength stuff with 8 lb weights now, but when I first started, I was using cans of veggies. You can also use a resistance band if you have that available. I do a lot of the exercises (where possible) on a balance ball. My friend got this circuit from a personal trainer...and it's worked well for both of us!

So I was thinking that we could just use this thread as encouragement to log in daily and record what we have done on a daily basis in terms of our exercise. I think it would really help those of us who have had trouble remembering to log in or to feel motivated to do so on a daily basis (happens to me ALL the time even though I spend a lot of time in front of a computer).

So here's what I think we could do and you can all let me know what you think:

I think we should reply to the thread regularly/daily and say what workout we did and for how long and how many calories burned. And then maybe at the end of each month talk about the workout we did and whether or not we think it worked out for you.

Thoughts? Comments? Ideas?

Yeah I'm pretty new too. I clearly slacked off for the last few days so I'm backlogging and counting calories like you wouldn't believe. I just finished level 3 of the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred...it was very hard and I took a few breaks but if you are all interested, you should definitely check it out! I need some help with lower body workouts so I set SP to set those up for me. What is everyone else doing? Any success stories with a particular workout?
