First of all, I want to say that you can tell by the responses that we are all sympathetic to your present medical condition. I too suffer from chronic pain syndrome. I have since 1993. I have been using NSAIDS since then and my body is building up a tolerance to them so they are becoming less and less effective. I do NOT want to go the way of biologics simply because of all the side effects. I mean, who wants leukemia as a potential side effect from a anti-inflammatory medicine? Have you tried any Eastern medicine like acupuncture as a way to relieve your back pain? I think I would try alternative ways of alleviating and dealing with your back pain as well as the other suggestions here. Gaiam has some wonderful dvds on dealing with back pain (since I have arthritis in my mid and upper back) which might also be something you can do "on a good day" (you know what I mean by that, I'm sure).
Pain management is something that I have really worked on in the past couple of years. I have found that hot water (how about a pool or possibly hot tub--although you might have difficulty getting into one if your back is rigid) is very effective. Also, lots of stretching (Gaiam has some wonderful dvds on that too) is good but you need to do them every day.
I fell in the tub 3 1/2 years ago and broke 5 ribs and fractured my spine mid-way so I understand a bit about the location of pain that you are talking about.
I do plan on continuing to seek out alternative ways of pain management because of how I need to take more and more NSAIDS to get the same relief. I am fearful for my stomach as well as internal bleeding, which I have had in the past.
Our state of GA is also considering make medical marijuana legal so although CO and WA (or is it OR?) are leading the pack on this ;for those who are suffering from chronic pain, this might be "what the doctor ordered". I just would like to see some more medical studies on this to see if there are any long term side effects, besides the munchies, which is tough if you are trying to lose weight. As Roseanna Roseanna Danna once said, "If it isn't one thing, it's another."
when i think of really sating foods when you have the munchies, nuts, plain fruit and ants on a log seem like the opposite of what you want to be going for. nuts are a low volume, high cal food, which is not the ideal food when you want to nibble everything. you want a low cal, high volume food if you want to nibble, so squash, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower are more like what you want to be aiming for. as in take a pound bag of broccoli, grate a little parmesan over that and have that for your snack. or slice up a yellow squash or a zucchini or two, add some spices and make them into chips. or have a whole spaghetti squash with pasta sauce and some beans. or air popped popcorn.
PLEASE talk to your doctor about it and see if s/he can get you into a medical study. It has been next to impossible for medical researchers to do any research on cannabis and cannabinoids because of all the federal restrictions. Now that people can use it legally, the research can start if people are willing to participate.
You also might see if the doc can help you find relevant literature from Europe. They're about half a century ahead of us on this type of research, and hopefully your doctor read some of that before prescribing it to you. S/he probably didn't pay a lot of attention to the discussion of side effects like this because they're considered mild (and in fact sometimes increasing appetite is the main effect, not the side effect,) but s/he should remember at least which articles talked about it most, if not what they said.
I agree with the suggestion to keep junk out of your house. Try having a big bowl of greens available; sometimes I like to eat them one leaf at a time without even having dressing on them. You might also try mineral water or decaf coffee to drink. Have low-calorie foods available that you can snack on.

No specific advice from me either, but there must be boards and forums out there now regarding medical cannibis; if you can find one, no doubt there will be others with direct experience.

I can speak to your situation, and honestly, if you can get through just one period of feeling like you need to eat your entire fridge without doing so, it gets a lot easier to say "No, I don't need to eat, I just have the munchies".
But here are some things that I do -
Try to find something else to do with your hands, like a video game or a book or a craft project. Keep some chewing gum or mints around. Drink flavored sparkling water. (or something similar) Munch on grapes and an ounce of cheese. As weird as it is, don't keep a ton of prepared food around, so that way if you really want to eat you'll have to cook first, and more time will pass before you eat which will reduce your attack of "munchies". Try to time the peak of your munchies with the bigger meals of your day, so that you're eating for a while, which will reduce the urge to snack.
I can't speak to your specific situation, but suspect that it may be similar to the "not enough food on the planet!" that I run in to when the doc puts me on prednisone. I have found that it's more about needing to do something with my hands and needing to crunch on something because the drug makes me so jittery that my jaw muscles clench if they're not "doing" something, so the usual recommendations to add fats and protein for satiety just don't work.
The best that I could do was to have a pile of crunchy fresh veggies on hand - along with a dip made of plain yogurt with onion, garlic, and dill. I'd chop up a head of cauliflower, a few large stalks of broccoli, a head of celery, some zucchini, some carrots, and end up with a massive bowl that could keep me busy dipping and crunching for a couple of hours (and it would all end up at well under 500 calories). I'd also make a few massive bowls of air-popped popcorn (easy on the salt, but using different spices), and a few massive bowls of mixed roasted veggies (turnips, parsnips, potato, sweet potato, squashes) that were chopped in to 1" pieces that I could eat one at a time.
I wouldn't bother with "meals" - just munched my way through everything. I'd have some meats in there (would eat 1 or 2 oz at a time, for a total of 8 or 10 oz, spaced throughout the day), and would occasionally throw in some baby dill pickles with a 1/2 oz of cheese sliced up.
With the prednisone, the "munchies" lasted all day, so I found it easiest to prep an entire day's worth the evening before, so everything was right at hand when I wanted something. Friends of mine have mentioned that throwing some hot sauce in the dip or on the roasted veggies or popcorn seemed to help, because the strong taste would slow them down a bit. I've never tried that (allergic to peppers), but have found the same thing with using a really strong balsamic vinegar.

Yeah, get the highest Indica - it helps, but...you know, it's still not foolproof.
The other thing I would recommend is to not have junk food in the house. No cheetos, no frozen pizza, no oreos, no dip and chips, no brownies - fill your pantry with low cal healthy snacks like apples, oranges, pears, carrots, etc.
My one go-to munchie type snack that I keep on hand is popcorn. Air popped 3 cups is 90 calories, oil popped is like 180.

I think the strain I'm using is a cross between the two, so I can try asking for a higher indica strain next time I go into the dispensary. Munchies are frustrating.
lol...uncontrollable muchies is one of the reasons I gave it up.
Indica usually produces less munchies than Sativa, maybe try switching it up?

The snack I had prepped was walnuts, "ants on a log", and an apple. It was fairly high in protein, it just seems like my satiety receptors turn off with my medicine. My willpower seems greatly diminished too. That's what I was asking about.
You may want to implement some hunger strategies like: --eating in the middle to upper end of your protein range. --making sure you are getting at least 25 grams of fiber daily. ---making sure you are getting at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies daily---aim for even more --use broth based veggie soups, low calorie-large salads, drink zero calorie beverages.

I don't want to get in trouble for asking this, but it's a legitimate concern. I use medical cannabis for severe back pain and every time I do I just lose control. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for dealing with the side effects (IE the munchies) because I've tried prepping a snack ahead of time and I always seem to go through it and two other things before I'm through, overeating severely in the process.
I'm not advocating illegal drug use, it's legal in my state and I have a certification. Does anyone have any tips, or do the nutritionists on here know anything that can be done? I don't seem to binge much unless I'm on it.
