Let me just point out that the two foods you fingered as causing problems are also very high in fat and sodium. It might not be the carbs that are the problem.
You also said that those were "cheats" and you had no idea how many carbs you had those days.That brings up two possibilities. You might very well simply have eaten too much or too little overall. Or-- don't get mad; think about it a minute-- the issue might be as much emotional as physical. If you feel like you just had a "total cheat," you might just be feeling angry and disappointed in yourself, which can very easily translate into feeling physically sick.
Thank you all for your insight and for the detailed information from Russell. To clear up my situation -- I eat low carb out of necessity as I refuse to live life miserable and the sugar lows were scary as well as unpleasant. I don't need to lose weight so this is strictly a diet for my own well being. Also, on the days I've had the pizza or the Tostitos...I have no idea what my carb amounts were as those were total cheats for me but being as I used to be able to handle them and I'm not doing this to lose weight, I still ventured to eat those items. However, after getting so sick from them, I feel they are no longer part of my future diet.
I do eat a lot of veggies every day as I snack on them throughout the day and then usually have a salad at dinner and put whatever meat the family is having on top of my salad. I drink a protein shake with almond milk at lunch which sometimes I make with half an apple and a bunch of spinach, and breakfast is eggs with bacon or sausage usually and a little bit of cheese. Sometimes I have a low carb wrap with it. My snacks are usually cheese on maybe 2 crackers. So all in all...I do maintain in the 50 - 70 net carbs a day range with the exception of the days I've had the pizza which is once a week at most but again...that seems to be a thing of the past.
I am trying to make an appointment with an endocrinologist but the one recommended doesn't have openings until January. I've only been at this new life for a month and a half so waiting 3 months seems a long time. I have been researching and reading like crazy and will continue to do so.
I am diabetic, and switched to low carb to lose weight and get my blood sugars under control. I struggled at first, and found out what low blood sugars were, after spending 7 years averaging 300 blood sugars.
I have cheats every so often, but 90% of the time I eat Atkins, and around 30-70 grams of carbs a day. You sound like you are having a low blood sugar reaction. I get blurry vision, and then a really bad headache after it clears up.
What I found is that for me, I need to space out my carbs, and I try to have some carbs at every meal. Plus, when you are that low in carbs, you need to make every gram count. So 70 grams a day of leafy green veggies, is different than 70 grams with a few Tostitos, and a slice of pizza from " down the street ".
Low carb is a restrictive diet, and requires a lot more care when you eat that way. Almost every successful low carber, has stories of how they messed it up the first time. It just is harder to get right. I have been off all my diabetes meds now for 41 months, and lost 150 lbs, so it worked well for me, but it has not been easy, and takes a lot more planning.
If you decide to stick to low carb, I would recommend that you read up on every book you can, and talk to your doctor, and a dietitian who is willing to discuss eating low carb, if you can find one. They may nudge you up to 100-120 grams a day, but more importantly, they will have you eating healthier carbs, split more evenly, so you don't experience those low blood sugars, or feelings of dizziness.
Another thing to consider is dehydration. Low carb has a diuretic effect. I had to drop how much Lasix I take, due to this. I would get dizzy when I leaned over, or climbed the stairs too rapidly.I cut my diuretic in half, and drink 10-12 glasses of water daily now.
With a regular diet, i wouldn't have to worry about these things, but I would have to worry about being over 300 lbs., and diabetic, so it is worth it to me. If you can have health improvements with low carb, and like eating meat and vegetables this can work for you, but most people today are just hearing that it works well, and trying it out without professional help, or even studying it to see if it is the best option. In that sense it is just a fad diet.
Eating 70 grams of carbs, while eating pizza, and Tostitos is low carb, but not very healthy. I think low carb is a poor description of Atkins. I would label it high fat, healthy carb, but high fat is a no-no, so he went with low carb. No matter what you call it, when you restrict any macronutrient, you then need to make sure that what you do consume is of the highest quality.
If you eat pizza once a week, you won't get into ketosis, so I can't see much benefit to doing " low carb ". Most of the benefit is from being in ketosis, which is why you see moderate carbers struggling, and feeling bad, and eventually quitting. They experience the restriction, without most of the benefit.
If you like pizza, and Tostitos, I doubt low carb will be something you will stick to long term. Just because a diet can work, doesn't mean it fits into your way of living. Some people just like carbs, and low carb is hell for them. The quality of the carbs you eat can be just as important as the quantity. You may find that if you up your vegetable and fruit intake, that you can up you carb intake, while still losing weight, and feel better. On a plan like that, you cans still have a slice of pizza, or a few Tostitos every so often, but most of your carbs will be healthy ones.
I had to give up the Atkins diet because my body did not want to switch to ketone burn rather than carbs. I got headaches, dizziness until I changed to a balanced diet. Even when I have a bad day, poor sleep, I feel much better once I do my exercise workout for the day. I would not go back to those "other" diet plans. Today I tried a new recipe with fresh asparagus, sauteed in EVO, garlic, so another veggie to add to my repertoire. My hair and nails are growing stronger so I must be doing something right. You might want to consider leaving Atkins behind till you sort this out.

I think that the answer to your question is likely to be no, but you really do need to see an endocrinologist. I would not recommend going to a GP or family doctor to address these issues--a specialist would be much more helpful.
Over this past summer, I self-diagnosed myself as hypoglycemic. The 3 hour glucose test backs me up but not to the extent I thought it would. Maybe I'm more insulin resistant than hypoglycemic but I guess an endocrinologist visit is in order.
Anyway...my question is this. I have taken my carb intake down to very low levels (compared to before) over the past 8 weeks roughly. It took a little bit to feel better but I haven't been dizzy or having any of the other issues and I feel good. I eat between 50 - 70 net carbs a day now.
While I eliminated almost everything with unhealthy carbs from my diet, I did snack on Tostitos once in awhile at night when I first started this new way of eating. If I do that now, I feel sick to my stomach. Also, I found I could still eat pizza from down the street (Not Domino's or Pizza Hut) and be ok so I allowed myself to do that with my family once a week and I was ok -- maybe because I would sleep it off after...I don't know. However, now I just had pizza this last Saturday night and I was miserably sick after.
The longer I go eating well...am I making myself more sensitive to carbs that used to be ok for me? Does my question even make sense? Ugh I feel so stuck as I'm eating the Atkins way and getting by but once in awhile, it's nice to throw something in my mouth without paying dearly for it. This has all been a huge mental adjustment for me.
