I too am 5'8" and a runner. I log about 25 miles a week and I own a cleaning service, so I am working as fast and as hard as I can for 7 to 8 hours a day. For me, I use the SP food meal plans. I eat and measure, but I also listen to my real hunger signals. If I am truly quite hungry I have a small planned and thought out snack. I pick something like the snack in the SP meal plan. For example yesterday I had the turkey and romaine salad...twice. Very hungry. I am training for the Peachtree 10k and have been doing some pretty hard training for it. Running hard three times a week and doing cross training and weights two days a week, plus the housecleaning job. I am finally starting to see some weight loss by switching to a mix between following the SP meal plans and also listening for TRUE hunger signals. I am sure to drink all my water too before making a decision. For me, sometimes hungry is really thirsty.
I use Spark Coach, that is where I got this approach from. I listen to SP radio on my i-pod while cleaning those houses, and working out also.
For me, this is a way of life, not a quick fix.
On the weight gain question, running burns up so many calories that there is a temporary weight gain due to water gathering around the muscles to induce healing. Subtract like 3lbs the morning after a hard run. Look as those non-scale victories, like how your clothes fit.
It helps me to say to myself, every time I see a mirror "I am worth it". We women can be so hard and cruel to ourselves.
Don't DNF on this race to getting in your own best shape.

I would say that given your height/weight, you aren't eating enough. 1200 calories is for a sedentary woman of average weight. Heavier and/or more active women need more.
Your body will still be healing to a degree from being pregnant and having been breastfeeding. It will need energy for that, too - particularly protein.
I would be inclined to check with your Dr for clearance to go on this journey, and be guided by his/her expertise.
Congratulations on your new little baby, too :-) I absolutely LOVED it when mine were little like that. I wanted to hold them all day (except when they pooped or up-chucked :-)

All I can say is ... maybe. I'm the same height as you, haven''t ever done more exercise than that, really, and never cut my calories that far. You may be able to lose weight on considerably more than you're trying to eat, and there's no worthwhile benefit to pushing it harder than necessary.

What you're experiencing is perfectly normal. That "gain" isn't really a gain. It's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that will pass in a few days. Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to gain weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope, it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days days.
While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. there will even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. the weight doesn't magically drop off the minute we decide we need to lose weight. it really could take 6-8 weeks of healthy eating and regular exercise before a person sees a downward trend on the scale. And that too is perfectly normal.
Are you eating too little ?
That's not something we can answer because we just don't have enough information. In general, an adult woman shouldn't eat less than 1200 calories per day not including exercise. it has been determined that 1200 calories is the least amount a woman needs to ensure she gets all the vital nutrients and calories her body needs to function properly. The fact is, eating too little can hinder a person's weight loss. So, yes, there is the possibility you're not eating enough.
Also, because you're post partum, that's going to effect how many calories you need to eat too. Did your doctor give the all clear to start losing weight ?
Women are notorious for drastically cutting their calories in hopes of speeding up their weight loss. Keep in mind that you may have been able to lose 20 or 50 pounds at a quicker rate. However, pregnancy changes a woman's body. What happened before isn't going to happen now. Don't be surprized if it does take longer to lose the weight.
And the closer a person gets to a healthy weight for their height, the harder and longer it takes to lose any excess. Remember, weight loss is nothing more than a byproduct of a healthy lifestyle. If you eat right, watch your portions and get some regular exercise that includes some strength training, you will see change with time.
BUT... you need to be more patient with yourself and your body. You didn't gain the weight overnight, iit's not coming off overnight.
My advice ? Don't eat less per se. Eat foods that nourish and properly fuel your body.

I'm only two weeks in to my journey after having my second child, but I've had success losing before (20 and 50lbs respectively) so I feel like I understand how my body reacts to diet/exercise. I had the typical large first week weight loss of five lbs (I'm 5'8" 175, headed to 145) and I ate 1200-1350 calories all week while burning 350-600 calories running 4 times (lengths of 4-5 miles at a time). I weigh myself daily and expected to be down a lb or two this morning. Instead I was UP not only 2lbs from yesterday, but also .6lbs from last week???!! How is that possible? I weigh at the same time daily, have consistent trips to the bathroom, eat healthy, hit my goals for nutrition, etc. What am I doing wrong? Thank you! FYI, I'm 10 weeks post-partum and weaned two weeks ago.
