I have bad knees and the treadmill caused me pain. We gave our treadmill to a neighbor and bought an elliptical. Although I like the elliptical, there is one thing I would change. There is a "zero" gap elliptical that is more comfortable. Here is a link with info.
I find an elliptical to be lower impact and faster to get my HR up. That being said, I prefer a recumbent stationary bike. I like to sit.

When I started exercising at 275 pounds, the only cardio machine I liked was the elliptical. It gave me the best calorie burn and was still easy on my joints. I would have pain in my hips and ankles when I walked so the elliptical was awesome. I could go at my own pace and as I got fitter, I could increase the resistance.
my suggestion would be to find someone you know that has one or find one at the local gym. I have one in our workout room at my apt complex and hate it. It really bothers my knees. You could also try them out at the store before you commit to buying one. My parents bought one and it wound up being an expensive coat rack. It also took up a lot of room they didn't have. I just bought a rebounder and love it.
Thank you all for the advise. I have many work out dvds from walk away the pounds, richard simmons to denise austin. I m kinda getting board with them and wanted something to add to it. Italked to my doctor abou it andhe thought an Elliptical would be best for me so I think im going with the elliptical.

I think you have to decide what piece of equipment you will use more. I think the treadmill would be easier on your joints to start with but you may like the elliptical better. You said you used to walk so maybe you can do the treadmill and start off slowly and increase as you get stronger. Plus a treadmill has inline, varying speeds and you can do it rain or shine, sleet or snow! Just decide which you like better. I have both a treadmill and an elliptical and if I could keep only one the treadmill would stay!
You have internet so you can do Spark People videos or go on YouTube and do other workouts as you get stronger. Those are pretty much free just the cost of your internet service good deal!
I am with Archimedes - DVD's are a great low-cost means of working out at home. Many people find various dance DVD's something that makes exercise actually fun, rather than a 'work'out
No piece of equipment is "better" than another. If you crank up the speed/incline/resistance of either the treadmill or the elliptical, you will soon hit the limits of your (current) fitness, long before you hit the limits of the equipment. The calories burned depend on how intensely you are prepared to work out, not the type of equipment.

Buying a piece of equipment of this kind is a big investment of both money as well as time. The first thing you have to ask yourself is whether or not you will use an elliptical or a treadmill. What is your track record with exercise equipment ? Have you bought other pieces of equipment only to have that equipment end up as a door stop ? Because the last thing you want is for that treadmill to end up as a very expensive coat rack. And yet, that's what happens when people decide they want to buy something.
Which are YOU most likely to use on a regular basis ? Because you are the person who is going to have to use it. Don't buy it if it is going to end up as a coat rack. that's a waste. You want to buy something you know you'll use.
Also, you don't have to spend a lot of money. Check your local craigslist or freecycle. Many people are looking to sell or get rid of their treadmills or ellipitcals. Some people may even give it too you free if you're willing to pick it up. So, before you buy, check craigslist. You may be able to save yourself some money that way.
And you don't necessarily need a treadmill to be healthy. You could use DVD workouts such as Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds. That's a terrific low impact series of walking workouts that most people could do at home. Lots of people still use Richard Simmons workouts too. check your local library. your library is not only a good source for books, you can borrow DVDs too.
Also, have you ever considered walking very early in the morning ? I've taken walks in my neighborhood as early as 5am. If you're agora phobic, walking early in the morning would be a good way for you to walk outside without any anxiety. mornings tend to be very very quiet with only the occasional runner to say good morning too. That might be something you want to try.
Mostly, if you do want your own piece of equipment, you have to decide is whether or not you will use it on a regular basis. That's what really counts. because I can't tell you how many friends I know who bought an elliptical or some other piece of equipment, used it for a couple of weeks and then put it out into the garage. You don't want to waste your money.
So, before you buy, do some research into what you want and what you're willing to pay. check out craiglist and freecycle too.
I am 32 years old and weigh 325. I need a bit of help decideing between buying a treadmill or buying an elliptical. I do not get out much due to Agora Phobia so I can not join a gym and no longer walk outside. I only have the money for one either the treadmill or ellipticl. Any advise on which would be the best to get that will give me the best work out,help to lose the weight and easy on the joints. Thanks!
