Hi all...just checking back in after my out-of-town adventure (to be at my son's college graduation)...not only was the weather fairly mild for Dec 20th (low 50's to low 60's ), but I weighed in today and lost 3 pounds!!
Thanks for all the advice. I did pretty good. When I found out where we would be eating, I checked out the menu online and could look at the nutrition value which was super helpful. The only thing I didn't do well on was drinking the water. I was really afraid to be caught where I couldn't get to a restroom. So today, I am back to drinking all my water.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone .... this life style is doable -- just have to plan ahead!

Hi everyone ---
First THANKS so much for taking the time and replying! It is so appreciated! I just got home from work and was so excited to get your responses! They were all terrific and I will take them to heart! I am so thrilled for my youngest to be graduating (and early ). My daughter and I will be driving -- it is a little over 300 miles so it isn't too far but I will take a cooler to pack our lunch. The rest of the family will be flying in around 3:30-5:00pm so we are getting excited. I hate living so far from the rest of my family -- my two kids are all I have for family here in Virginia.
I will do what I did at Thanksgiving where I allowed myself to try a small portion of the dishes I want to eat and i hopefully will still lose weight. We will be doing a lot of walking (and cheering) so I think that will also help.
I also broke the 200 pound mark today and am tickled pink. I haven't seen my scale show below 200 since 2008 so that made me even more determined to keep working the plan. I really think Spark People has taught me many things and I have learned a lot about myself. I have done diets in the past but this time I really changed my mindset to see it as a lifestyle change and I think that is making all the difference. Plus the support you get here is second to none!!

Congratulations to your son on his graduation and to you on your success.
Try to get some exercise in, walking or using the gym at the hotel.
Tips on eating out:
Stay away from the Blooming Onion! While delicious unless you share it with a dozen people.... lol
You can eat healthy while dining out. Consider splitting a meal with your daughter and ordering an extra salad. Practice all of the other things that you have learned: Avoid fried and breaded foods. Avoid cream based soups. Watch the appetizers and the bread baskets. Limit alcohol. Order extra vegetables. Replace potatoes, rice etc with vegetables, Avoid coffee based milkshakes .....ie Frappuccino's. Eat as healthy of a breakfast as you can. I can split a French Toast with bacon and scrambled eggs breakfast combo with my daughter. She eats the French Toast, I eat the eggs, we split the bacon. Don't let yourself get overly hungry. Pay attention to your stress levels, especially if you are an emotional eater. Take time to relax and decompress.
You know what to do...And you CAN DO IT!
Enjoy yourself, be prepared for tons of compliments and don't worry about it too much. It's only a few meals on the journey of being of healthy.

I love the Wendy's small chili for a meal, or $1.00 Jr hamberger or I will buy bananas or a tray of fruit at a super market ans snack on that. I also buy celery to snack on. It works for me. Good luck. Merry Christmas.

Oh my goodness! I joined Spark People 3 days ago while on vacation in NEW ORLEANS! I mean, what's a girls supposed to do? In all my wisdom (all 3 days of it), here's what I've done that's kept me on track I... 1. Ate a small breakfast at home (vacation rental), packed a lunch, and eaten half of the portion at dinner (because let's face it, I am NOT passing up on gumbo!) or 2. Ordered salad for dinner (every other night) or 3. Allowed myself a BITE or 2 of something like bread pudding with praline sauce, knowing that I am eating VASTLY less than I used to. I hope this helps, and I look forward to reading the other comments!

You didn't say if you'd be flying or driving or whether you'll be staying in a hotel or with family /friends.
If you're driving, I'd recommend taking a cooler & putting some healthy snacks or beverages in it. And whether a hotel or other arrangements, you could take the cooler in with you.
As other posters have said, be sure that you DO eat a few meals that you actually enjoy & just have smaller portions.
You can do this! And "super*gratz" on your weight loss thus far!

You can do it, you really do KNOW what to do and not do..............Outback has great steaks, for one thing! Too bad most restaurants only have those dumb salads though, try to order real vegetables to help fill you up. And yes, go ahead and have something really tasty and good here and there, and don't waste calories on alcohol, keep on walking all over the place. You will do fine.

Dinners are safe if you go with a nice salad, dressing on the side, no garlic toast or anything. Many restaurants make delicious salad options that are not boring or ordinary. With breakfast, you can always order 2 eggs with toast and a side of fruit instead of hash browns.
Also, a couple of bad meals won't overturn your weight loss goals, as long as you are back on track when you return home.

You have lost 35 lbs. It should be quite noticeable. Watch your portions, look for meals lower in calories. I never ate at Outbacks, but most places have lower calorie meals.
You will be busy while you are there, more active. Try to get some exercises in while you are in the hotel. Most of all, enjoy.

I am leaving Thursday morning for my son's college graduation on Friday morning. I am taking my daughter and meeting family who are flying in from the West coast. I am really nervous as I have been doing really well the last two months and have lost nearly 35 pounds. I think much of my success was a result of each and every meal was in my control at home (haven't eaten out at all). I know we will be eating out for all meals at some of my son's favorite restaurants including Outback, and want to enjoy myself but I don't want to overeat with all the celebration. I want to feel good when I get back so I just want to eat as normally as I can. In many cases I won't know where we are eating until we are about to go somewhere. I know all the rules about what to eat and look for so I guess I just need the encouragement that I can do it and will stay in control!!! So, if you recently have been there, done that, a shout out would be great!!
