I would recommend journaling. Or post a blog here on sparkpeople, this is a GREAT place to rant and get things off your chest! Also, exercise is good for stress. Don't overdue it if you feel physically off during that time of the month, but an easy walk or stretching/yoga may help.

I agree that you should try to find ways to reduce your stresses if you can with some of the suggestions provided. Stress is a normal part of life though and it will never be completely gone so you also need to try to find an alternative method of managing it in a way that is healthy as others have also said.
I personally will ask the hubby to watch the baby and will take a nice bubble bath while reading a book. If I am at work I will find a way to take a walk to step away from it for a bit. Lately too whenever I am stressed about something I will ask myself "will this matter in 6 months?" Typically the answer is no and that in itself calms me. I also find exercise to help since it is time that is 100% dedicated to me so it gives me time to think. I know that TOM stinks so good luck! You can do it!! :)

I am a firm believer that stress is a neglected aspect of weight gain. If a person could reduce their stress, they'd automatically reduce their waistline. So, if you are an emotional eater, I agree with the others who've replied, you must find ways to reduce your stress.
I know things can be overwhelming, but you have to find ways to reduce your stress that don't involve food. When you feel stressed out and want to head for the kitchen, put on your jacket and take a walk. Walking is not only great cardiovascular exercise, it's a great way to reduce stress too. If you don't want to take a walk, sit and sip a cup of herbal tea. Drinking tea is another way to reduce stress. Treat yourself to a bubble bath. There's nothing like a good soak in a warm tub to help release tension.
And you could always do what I do... hit the gym. Take a kickboxing class or hit a heavy bag. I find an intense workout helps me unwind and relax.
I understand that food is comforting. I too have had more than my fair share of emotional eating instances. But you know, there really are better ways to manage your stress. Have you ever taken yoga ? If you've never done yoga, I highly recommend you take a class. There are yoga classes that can help you learn to meditate. studies have shown that meditating can help reduce a person's stress, which in turn can help a person lose weight.
As far as the PMS symptoms, same is true. Hit the gym. I find a good workout gets the blood flowing, which in turn helps to reduce the PMS symptoms.
During our menstrual cycle, we do burn a few more calories. So, it's okay to eat a bit more. but don't use TOM as an excuse to eat whatever you want. Have a couple of pieces of chocolate or whatever treat you'd like. Indulge, but don't over indulge.
It takes time, but you need to learn to be more mindful of what you're eating. That's why I've become a big proponent of learning yoga. It makes us more mindful of what we do.
Mostly, be kind to yourself as you would to others. It takes a long time to change habits learned over a life time.

Trying talking to people about what is stressing you out. Perhaps people that you trust, close friends. Best thing to do is talk to them when you feel that urge to eat. I take walks. I know that if I stay in the house I will eat any or everything I can find as a snack. I like to pray and I have close friends to talk to.

If you are an emotional eater, you really need to get to the root of the problem. Until you figure out different coping skills you will continue to risk binging due to stress/anger/boredom/depression etc.
I dealt with this for years and had to do therapy in addition to other exercises to get it under control- That does not mean that I don't want to eat for stress or other emotional issues, I have done that even now, but I am better able to manage my emotions and because of that, I have less stress over all and feel healthier.
In the mean time, make sure you only have healthier options (only dark chocolate if you turn to sweets, whole grain crackers or pretzels if you go for salty/crunchy.

This isn't so much going to address the issue as it applies right now, but it MAY for future times:
Have you spoken with your Dr about this? Sometimes certain supplements can help with this sort of thing so it could be worth your trying.
Have you tried burning lavender oil - that can have a calming effect which can spin off into less emotional eating!
Listen to favourite music or watch an easy-going movie - it can help to take your thoughts of your emotions and food.
Go for a walk if you can - that helps distract you by taking in the sites and sounds, and at the same time you are getting some good exercise in which just might help you to feel better and less emotional.
Is it close to your bedtime, can you go to sleep right now without eating?
What healthy foods do you have in your house right now...any good fruits? Any skim milk?
Don't eat a bunch of junk that you'll regret!!
Don't use your menstrual period as an excuse. Yes, believe me, I understand what it does to us. But don't dwell on it!
Don't worry about yesterday or tomorrow, you just need to get through tonight.
Try to visualize all the other people in their homes tonight dealing with the same problem as you, or dealing with other problems. Somewhere right now someone is dealing with an illness, a job loss, a romantic breakup, etc. Your advice to them would probably be "Hang in there. Stay strong. You can do it". Well, tell that same advice to yourself.

Okay ladies so i need to know what can help me here. I am a big stress eater. (Big in more ways than one) And i am currently dealing with my "monthly visitor" Unfortunatly this means that everything is making me emotional and that is stressing me out. I am trying really hard not to turn to food but my will power is breaking any advice?
