I had polio when I was 4. I can still walk reasonable well, tho I use walking sticks if the ground is rough. I have found deep water aerobics, wearing a float belt around my waist, to be the best exercise.

Hi, I've never met another polio survivor, we're getting rare now. I have many of the same issues you have. If you haven't read it yet, I would highly recommend the book The Polio Paradox. It explained so much that I hadn't understood before, both about polio and post-polio, and especially the limits of what a polio damaged body can do 40-50 years after infection. You can't do the usual gym work, the 'burn' a gym workout encourages is more motor neurons dying in us. What has helped me most is I've been doing gyrotonics for several years now - it's a mobility system that is focused on helping you keep limber and aligned, and you don't have to STAND to do it. It just doesn't seem to be commonly available everywhere. Sadly it doesn't help with weight loss, but I've still got mostly full range of motion and much less pain. Good luck!

I appreciate your quick reply. I've already gotten the OK from my doctor, and my son is a certified personal trainer. Looks like I'm ready to go.

I am sorry for your health issues as well! It is true that you should check with your dr or physical therapist. The only recommendation I would add is that it might be worth while checking out the seated video workouts that are on SP. You would be able to use only the top portion of your body to workout. I would see if any look like they would be helpful without putting undue stress on your legs.

I am sorry to hear of your illness! I am not sure if you are posting for the sake of posting or are looking for suggestions on exercise. If it's the later, I would encourage you to discuss your desire to exercise with your doctor. And it may be a good idea to get a referral to a physical therapist who can help provide exercises based on your current limitations. I know a lot of people with limited mobility are able to do chair exercises and water exercises. Perhaps a PT could help with ideas surrounding these options

But we SP members can't provide much help when medical conditions are involved. We would feel bad if we offered a suggestion and made things worse

I am a polio survivor currently suffering from post-polio syndrome. This is a chronic condition, and any exercise requiring my legs exacerbates the condition. To over use my legs, with the exception of walking around the house, has resulted in the loss of my ability to walk.
