The advice I'd give is what worked for me. Look at this as a lifestyle change and think about a way of eating that you can follow for the rest of your life. I started by committing to choosing healthy foods more often than not, tracking everything I ate, and staying at my calorie goal which I didn't set too low. While the weight came off slowly I changed my eating preferences. There has been little change in how I ate when I started compared to now. Second thing is don't do too much. Get the eating down right and then think about exercise. Finally, if you have a meal that isn't on plan or a day, forget it. Get back on track. It all balances out over the long haul.

SP gets easier and quicker as you go along and can select more and more foods from your favorites. Don't get discouraged if it takes awhile to set things up. They will more than pay off in the long run.
Thank you for your much needed advice. I just joined Sparkpeople today so I'm excited to begin. We're the same age (44), it's really good to see someone that I can relate to that has already lost so much weight. Thanks again and good luck!

I made New Years resolutions and New Years day would come and go and so did my resolutions. So next time I started at the beginning of December. I quit smoking on the 2nd and joined a local gym at the end of the month Put aside negative feelings and emotions, logic and reasoning rule

1. Don't wait until January 1 to start. That is trite, inconvenient and ineffective.
2. If you are going to join a gym, stay the heck out of everybody's way!
Just the thought of January dieters makes me grouchy. 99% of them give up well before February. Take charge of things NOW and don't bother if you aren't going to take it seriously.

Make an appointment with a real dietitian, a person who sees you face to face, and you can work out a good menu plan that suits you, for the rest of your life. No pithy phrase will serve you for a long period of time. Trust in yourself, count on yourself.
Journal journal journal - write it down, use that nutrition tracker, use it honestly even on days where you go over your ranges.
Ditch fast food. If it's the only change you make, it'll make a difference.

I always recommend starting small and making small changes so they become healthy lifestyle habits. Whether it is increasing water, fruits & veggies, protein, sleep, or exercise, making changes that are not overwhelming and can last will make the difference. Track your food! And to be patient!

I would say prepare for the long haul. There are many ups and downs, but over time, you will succeed if you stick to it!

I would tell all new members,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. that's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time. Thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body. You didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight.
That's why it's important to start with simple changes first. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated.
