one year when we were visiting DH's family in Louisville that movie was on TV. His niece (who was WAY old enough to know better) went outside by herself to see if her tongue would really stick to a fence post. Of course it did. She panicked and pulled it loose, taking off a piece of skin. OUCH! She came inside crying and too embarrassed to tell anybody what she'd done. We still tease her about it!

And she has a t-shirt with that scene on it.

I TRIPLE dog dare you!

It's definitely a classic! It came out in the early 80's and I've enjoyed watching it every year since!

Personally I think that movie is the dumbest movie ever!

I agree with the poster below. My list of holiday classics include things I have enjoyed since a child: Dr. Seuss's Grinch, Charlie Brown Christmas, Garfield Christmas, Frosty, Rudolf. I've never seen a Christmas Story or many of other holiday movies traditionally thought to be "classics".

Whether or not it's a classic is based on whether or not you have enjoyed it for many years....I personally hate this movie so it wouldn't be on my list.

I emoticon that movie; it's so hilarious! I love when Ralphie brings that big fruit basket to his teacher and gives her a wink, too funny! The father in that movie is beyond hilarious and love it when his wife breaks the "special award" he got and he's looking for glue and says "Not a finger!!!!". emoticon

No question about it. I put on par with Its Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th street.

Ever wonder why Christmas is not in the title to Miracle on 34th street? The producer, knowing that movie attendance peaked in the summer, released in in the summer and thought the use of the word "Christmas" would negatively impact viewership. Info from TCM.

it's shoot your eye out, not poke.

But my favorite sequence is the tongue on the pipe. It the triple dog dare you that gets me rolling.

Truthfully, when I was young, I stuck my tongue on a pipe. But I was able to spit and get loose. Never did it again.

Yes it is a classic. The kid who played the main roll, he is a true Hollywood success story. That made me happy.

No way in H-E double toothpicks. I DESPISE that movie almost as much as I despise the song The Little Drummer Boy.

In all the years that it has been shown, I do not believe I have ever watched it! I guess I should! So I really cannot say if it is a classic or not.

think I've possibly seen most of it once on TV.

About the only one I watch is Christmas Carol - and this year I've not even seen that

Definitely a classic! My kids are grown but we still watch it multiple every year. We quote lines from the movie year round. All of my cousins love it too.
