I understand your apprehension. I would be uneasy too.

as others have said, always be aware of your surroundings and keep your cell phone with you. If you feel uncomfortable, LEAVE immediately.

it may also help to get a key chain mace canister. My dad gave me one to carry when I run.

and if you ever have to yell for help, yell FIRE (not RAPE). Folks are more likely to help if they think THEY might be in danger themselves.

oh - and vary your arrival/departure time. Routines make you predictable. If you are predictable, you are easy prey for anybody who might be watching.

I was a member of one years ago. At night I think there was only one person there at the desk. I actually went to one not in the best part of town. Let me put it this way, at the time my city listed number 5 as the most dangerous city in America (we've gotten better since then). But I never had any problems. Going at night I could park close to the door go straight in and straight out. I always locked my purse in the truck so I never had in on me coming or going. I didn't get off work until 10:30 so I would go 10:30-11 and stay until after midnight. I also would sometimes would got 1 or 2 am when I couldn't sleep or other odd hours.

As the others have said, it should be fairly safe but use your head. And keep your cell phone on you at all times. (If you have one.)

Funny, You_Caliban!

My gym has a 24-hour express location, and I use it a couple times a week. I usually pull in around 4:30am. I'm never alone there- anywhere between 6 and 12 people are already there. There's a key card to enter, and security cameras, and the front of the building is all glass so everything inside can be seen, except the bathrooms. I've never felt nervous about going at off hours.

Thanks for all the feedback. Its a small town gym within walking distance of my house. I plan to use the gym during the day. My main concern is that there is never any staff at this location. It took a week just to get someone to call me back. I went to a much more involved type of gym that included personal trainers before I moved so this will be a big switch for me. Your feedback has really helped me out..

I used to have a very strange schedule and I got a membership to a 24 hour gym. The gym itself was safe enough, but I did not care so much for the parking structure they used, it was dark and creepy. I ended up going to a different location that had a very nice, well lit parking lot. I was quite happy with that location and I felt perfectly comfortable at 3am working out. I found that I was rarely the only person there, actually. And the nighttime employees were very nice.

They should be safe, but you should always exercise caution. Even the most secure facility can be compromised. I often attend mine after hours, but I have never had an issue. I always use safety awareness, and take extra precautions. I always let someone know where I'm going and when I'm expected back, and I have my cell phone on me at all times. When I'm on a cardio machine, I always use one that doesn't have a way to sneak up behind me, and I don't listen to music on headphones when I'm there by myself. I maintain spatial and auditory awareness. If I feel uncomfortable, I leave. :)

Generally, I'm the only one there. The doors are locked, and it's by a busy highway, and it's surrounded by glass so anyone can see in. Anyone who accesses it has their entry recorded, so that's a big deterrent. It's not like you can sneak in anonymously. ;) There's occasionally a couple of guys over in the weights area; I've used weights now and again, and they're there for the weights... not to molest the overweight redhead. ;)

I was wondering the same thing. My schedule is crazy so a 24 hour place is the only way for me. Just not joined due to not really knowing how safe they could be.

agree they should be safe, if there are camera's if idiots annoy other people they may loss their membership..
my gym only allows members with a bracelet system and turntable enterance- it logs all your details- if someone gets caught annoying others and breaking rules they get kicked out no questions..

They should have good security cameras running at all times and supposedly there is off-site staff that keeps an eye on these in real time.

I worked out at a 24 hr Anytime Fitness for a short time but I never went in the really off hours so I can't say for sure, but the neighborhood where the gym was was a safe neighborhood so I think it would have been safe - I certainly never heard about anything untoward happening. I would have no qualms whatsoever about going in normal hours (say 6am - 11pm). I don't think I would have gone at 3am though, safe neighborhood or not. Too creepy!

I don't have a lot of fitness center choices in my area, so I have had to join one of these 24 fitness centers. How safe are they. This facility doesn't seem to ever have staff on site. Its not like there is a screening process for joining, so I am thinking anyone could join or find an access card and come in. Does anyone know if these facilities are generally pretty safe?
