I doubt you can avoid all chemicals and "enhancers", but you can certainly take steps to minimize them.

Don't eat processed food or anything that came from a factory!

I eat mostly protein, whole vegetables and whole fruits (not canned or packed). I buy them from the local farmer's market.

Starches can easily come from root vegetables and then only sparingly eat anything from the center of the grocery store - boxes, bags or cans.

Organic is a whole other level its an option, but I still stick to Michael Pollan's food recommendations - he has several interesting books on this topic.

ALBERTJON, unfortunately, if you don't have a guarantee on the packaging of you food that there are no creepy additives, there are almost certainly creepy additives. If you eat major label foods (you know who they are...but I won't name any names), you are absolutely eating weird crap that they want to hide from you.

That's why so many of us eat organic. But don't think eating organic will save you from the fear of consuming chemicals and other yucky things. Weird things still creep mysteriously into organic foods. It's been documented many times.

So, the best thing to do is to stay alert. Don't just shove any old thing in your mouth. Do your research and figure out which brands you think you can trust the most. And grow your own food if you can...but be sure to buy organic plants to grow that food from. Many starter plants you can buy these days are actually genetically engineered.

I was reading this morning in one of our metropolitan newspapers about how there are approximately 10,000 chemicals added to Americans' foods in order "to improve it." Apparently, according to the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the Food and Drug Administration doesn't even know what many of the food additives are.

I know many of the SparkPeople try to eat organic and natural and avoid eating as much processed food as possible. However, for some of us, I guess we just have to hope the packaged and processed foods we do buy don't have a lot of harmful chemicals in it.

One possible disturbing aspect is that many of the people who decide that additives are safe are connected in some way to the companies manufacturing the additives.
