HMG thank you Trufflemaker.
I got back from the doctor tonight with a positive diagnosis of ADD/ADHD for my 8 year old daughter. The doctor suggested Concerta. I really don't know what to do. She has a mild to moderate case of ADD/ADHD but it is affecting her school work. Thank you for sharing your sons day. It has actually brought me to tears to think that maybe my daughter can come home that happy about school work too.

It's probably too soon to proclaim victory, but yesterday my son went to school for the first time after starting on Concerta. (He started on Wednesday but it was a snow day). He came home bursting with the news that he had gotten 100% on a history test. That was AMAZING news, as his typical grade would be more in the 60's. He also had a music test, and his music teacher actually interrupted his performance to congratulate him on how well he did. He was so proud and happy to have had such a successful day at school. I hope it continues!!

My oldest is nearly 12 and has been on medication for about 4 years. She started out on Metadate, but it stopped working and she was changed to Strattera. She is doing MUCH better in school, now! And she doesn't drive us nearly as nuts as before. :-)

I think she likes being able to concentrate on things and improving her performance at school and at home. She has a better time making friends now, too.

One of my kids has ADHD. He is 12, and was first diagnosed when he was 7. We tried many alternatives, including allergy testing and diet changes. The diet changes (eliminating gluten and milk) were successful in helping him establish control over his emotions (which I think is actually a separate issue for him). This year he started grade 7. The work periods are longer, the type of work requires more self discipline and attention, and he was not performing well. We decided that it was time for our "last resort," and have just today started him on a trial of Concerta. Cross your fingers for us that it is what he needs to help him through the next years of school! I will let you know how it goes over the next few weeks. By the way, the link in the first message does not work.

Thimbles,
Thanks for the post. I didn't know that they may only have to take it for school. I meet with my daughter's doctor this Friday to find out what he thinks we should do. I am nervous.

My son has ADHD. He started medication in first grade but only only takes it for school, not when he is at home. I have had a really hard time dealing with him but now he is 13 and is turning into a wonderful, responsible, young man.

Has anyone tried alternatives to medication? Do they work?

I thought the moody was just because he was a teenager. I am also have some issues with lying. Nothing big, mostly about school work but it is driving me crazy!

I'm dealing with the same thing. It doesn't help that their hormones are also changing at this point and time. My daughter is 10 and has some awful moody swings.

Hi, Im new to this site.
My 9 year old daughter has ADHD and has been on Concerta for a few years. It has helped her alot with her school work but I find it can make her very moody, her Dr say's it can be a normal side affect of the meds. Does anyone have any tip's for dealing with mood swings? Thanks in advance :)

Kim,

I fought it for years and finally agreed to the medication (Concerta) for my son's own good. He was unable to focus in school and had a hard time keeping friends because is he was so in their face. It has gotten much better but now he is 15 and deep into puberty. I am wishing there was a pill to get parents through the teen age years - LOL.

Good luck, Joy

Hi,
My daughter just finished the ADD ADHD screening and I have to go in on Friday to talk about the results. We have known this doctor for years and by the tone of his voice I have a feeling he is going to tell me that she will need treatment for it. I am nervous and am glad to have someplace to talk and learn about the situation.
Thanks for starting this message board.
