I just had to click on this thread, because the title just grabbed me in a funny way. :)

What I have done is identify what are the "trigger foods" for me - the things that I can't just have just one, the things that if I know are in the house will be the things I turn to right away when I get stressed. For me, any sort of cookie does me in. All of those things had to go. Once they are gone, I tried to find some healthy alternatives and put them front and center where the cookies used to be.

Then it is just taking it one day at a time! Yes, this does sound like a certain ten step program, but for me I think that food is my addiction. Approaching it that way works for me. And breathing. When I get the urge to eat and I know it is stress related, I make myself breathe big deep breaths. This has been working for a few weeks for me now.

Good luck! :)

Ok so you fall off the wagon. The best advice I have ever heard as it relates to food is do not deny yourself of it. It only makes the craving worse.

This does not mean to go hog wild and eat an entire bag of chips or tub of ice cream. What I am saying is pay attention to the serving criteria on the package and allow yourself a serving not a bag or tub. This way it will last a bit longer and you can "reward" your craving to it. This way you are in control.

A serving of chips is not what got you to where you are at today, it was the entire bag.

who turned into her mother, who turned into her mother...etc.

I have recently started to identify the times when I feel the most compelled to eat junk food. Not having it in the house doesn't help because when I want it, I HAVE to have it so I will go somewhere to buy it. Anyway, I've begun to realize that on top of that one week out of every month I also want junk food when I'm bored, tired, or depressed which is exactly what my mother and my grandmother and great-grandmother do. I have no idea what to do about these cravings. I've tried eating something else but because it's not what I really want, I find myself eating way more than I originally intended too and then still go out and buy whatever it is I wanted to begin with (mainly chocolate)

Does anyone have any advice for getting out of this bad generational habit???
