Thanks everyone! I've got my son on a pretty regular schedule now, at least at night. He sleeps from 8-8:30 until 6:30-7. Even if he wakes up early, he doesn't fuss, so I get his breakfast ready before I go in and get him up at 7.

Naps are a little more difficult. He's not a consistent napper. Some days he'll take 3 naps for 2 hours at a time, while other days he'll take 2 45 minute naps. I'm working on getting more of a routine going, but its tough.

My daughter has been going to bed at 8:30 since she was a baby. Her last bottle was around 8pm and usually afterwards she's be tired and fall asleep. I always made sure she fell asleep on her own and not in anyone's arms.

She's 7 now and she goes to bed between 8:30/9pm. On the weekends, she stays up later.

My son has great sleeping habits. He is 4 months old. He goes to bed around 8 and is up the next morning around 6:30-7. He has a bottle around 6-7pm...plays for a little while and then I rock him to sleep.
My daughter will be four next month and also has great sleeping habits. She goes to bed around 8:30 and is up the next morning around 7am.
It all started with routine!

My daughter is two and I have always put my daughter to sleep at around 8, give or take 30 minutes. You would think that an earlier bed time would make them wake up earlier, but good naps and an earlier bedtime helps them sleep better. I really liked the book "healthy sleep habits, happy child," it might be something to check out.

My son is 20 months old now and we've always put him to bed somewhere between 7:30 - 8:00. He sleeps about 10 hours and then takes a 2-3 hour nap during the day. I think at 9 months babies are still supposed to be sleeping 14-16 hours a day. I only remember because mine was always just a bit under. My son still screams in his sleep once in a while. Is your son getting lots of teeth? On the days that he exhibits teething symptoms, we usually give him a little bit of motrin or tylenol before bed. It seems to take the edge off and he sleeps more soundly.

My 4 year old has been put to bed between 8 & 8:30 since I can remember. She still naps during the day as well for anywhere between 30 min - 2 hours depending on how hard she played that day.

Since my 2 yr old was 10 months old, he goes to bed between 8 and 8:30 pm. When he refuses to have a nape he goes to be earlier. He sleeps until about 7 am everyday. Plus, when he's at home he takes about a 2 hour nap. At daycare he only takes a 45 min. to 1 hour nap. But he's really tired when I bring him home at 5 or 6 pm every night.

Babies need: 14-16 hours a day
Toddlers need: 12-14 hours a day
Preschoolers need: 11-13 hours a day
Kids aged 5 and up: 9-10 hours a day
(this is from parenting magazine).

Each child is different, but I know if my 2 yr old doesn't get about 12 hours or more a day--he is very cranky and mean.

Thanks Rosalie and everyone else for your input. Seems like my little one is about where he should be at his age!

my 2 year old goes to bed at 7 and my 6 year old goes to bed around 8-830. they both wake up at 730am. ive never had a problem with them getting up any earlier and even if they did go to bed later they still wake up at 730 but the they will be crabby. the 2 year old still takes a nap everyday at 11am for about 2 hours. i think children around 1 year are supposed to have about 14-15 hours of sleep including naps. good luck with everything.

EBLAIRJ - thanks for the info on the book. I'll definitely check that out! I got a few books before he was born, but honestly, reading about how to nurse him or swaddle him or anything else seemed so far away at 7 months that I just never got to it. Guess I should now! :)

When my daughter was born unfortunately she wasnt a fan of sleeping through. She had her bedtime at 10pm till she was 3months and then it went down to 8pm. when she turned 1 we brought it down to 7pm and shes now 3 and still has the same bedtime!

She sleeps for about 12hrs now and I think thats about right for a child of her age.

12 hours is actually a really normal amount of time for a baby to sleep at night. My daughter usually sleeps at least 12, sometimes 13-14. She is 16 months, but she has been doing this since she was about 6 months.

She goes to bed around 8:30 pm. We would probably like her to go to bed earlier at some point, but so far that's what works for us. My husband comes home, gives her dinner, gives her a bath, reads her stories, and then she goes to bed. (She's with me all day long so that's Daddy time.)

My favorite sleep book is The No Cry sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. We haven't followed the book exactly, but we took some good general concepts from it (the bedtime routine, for example), and it also gets really specific about what kind of expectations you should have for your infant's sleep and how much he/she really needs at varying ages.

Thanks everybody...I figured that somewhere between 7-8 is good, but sleeping 12 hours just seemed like a really long time for a baby to sleep, especially since he takes 2 or 3 one hour naps a day.

He has had two rough nights the last two nights - he would just start screaming...not awake, it was like someone was pinching him or something because he sounded like he was in pain. I went in to him, but he was still asleep. I just hope this isn't going to be a trend or that he'll be one of those kids with night terrors. Those are scary for parents to have to deal with.

You are lucky to have such a good baby, but 7pm would be a good bedtime. I have 5 kids who were the "Kids from Hell" because they NEVER wanted to go to bed at night. They still don't sleep at night and they are teenage/college age. It wasn't until I read "CRYING BABY...SLEEPLESS NIGHTS" that I found any help. Great book, wish I'd gotten it to start with.

What time do you put your little one(s) down for bed? When my son was first born it was around 10pm and I have to say, I was lucky - he's been a sound sleeper since 3 weeks.

He's now 9 months and I'm trying to decide what's a good time to put him down. He always wakes up at 7am like an alarm clock. In fact, I can't think of a nicer way to wake up than to the sound of your baby cooing and talking on the monitor.

What time do you put your baby down?
