And the final decision is............She is going to plan an overnight camp to help younger girls bridge to the next age level. She will plan the camp, activities, ceremonies and menu. She will help the girls earn the requirements to move to the next age level. They will earn a couple badges and take home some crafts. They will do a service project as a group.
Thanks to everyone for the great ideas. I will compile a list for our council. Some were very unique and I would love to pass them on. Thank you!

I hadn't thought about using the boy scout websites. I always check lots of different GS websites. That's a great idea.
Our troop usually does a toy drive for Christmas. It's a small drive, but we get several toys donated.

| That's an excellent idea. I might just type up a list of service project ideas and pass them out at the next leader meeting. I like it!

I am glad that your daughter has made a decision with regards to her service project..
I think you should put all the ideas that were on this list and hand them to your leaders..

Well she has made a decision of sorts. She is doing a camp out for younger girls. It will help them bridge from one age level in Girl Scouts to another. Not sure what her camp out theme will be yet. March is the GS birthday, so maybe a big birthday bash.
One of the other leaders asked us to help bridge her troop in the spring, so she decided that would be a good choice and a project that is wanted.
There are so many other great options for service projects in this thread. I might suggest some for our troop to do together.
Thanks everyone.

| I'm not sure what our school requires. Someone said their high school requires 65 hours. A girl scout Gold Award is 60 hours for the project alone. We do a lot of service projects in Girl Scouts.

i hope she likes my idea i think maybe i will even see what our den leader feels on that one maybe we can do something to that effect too our boys are 7 to8 yrs old and i think it would be a cool service project our school district has a service project thats requried for 3rd to 12th grades to complete 4 hrs or community service my sons going into 2nd so its not required of him however they can never learn to early about helping others

|
| Toy's my spark her interest. Even if she works with Toy's for Tots. She could get people to donate toys. I'll make that suggestion.

| ok i have a son and so rather than girlscouts we have boyscouts he is still in cubscouts but a idea i had was a toy drive for poor children to have a better christmas that would certainly take about 40 hrs some staore have the boxes around christmas for toys for tots or others who do that but if she gets out early she may get a few places that will allow her to collect of even set up a booth on weekends i dunno just trowing it out there

| I can't get her to make up her mind what to do. She has been back in school for a week now and is busy with friends. I can't fault her there. I think it will be a younger girl event of some sort. Thanks for all the great ideas. I'll post when she comes up with a theme and maybe you can give her theme ideas.

| I love the haunted house idea. We can't do it this year though. I am getting married on the 6th and we are having a GS activity on the 27th. That sounds like a great idea for next year.

Hi! I run a Guide and Ranger unit here in Canada. Guides are 9-11 and Rangers are 15-18.
For my Guides BIG project I will sometimes get the Rangers to aid in the project. Sometime the 11 year old guides will do it themselves.
Last year we ran a haunted house and charged 2.00 per child. The proceeds went to things for youth like CAS activities, food programs in our areas and activity learning programs.
We also arranged for a Saturday FUN day in our area. We contacted the local CAS and children in care came out and had a great time. We played different realay games that helped with hand eye coordination and learning.
There is also the Habitat for Humanity Challenge. Check out the Girl Guide Website. Im sure there is a USA version. I know there is a Canandian one.
Keep us posted as to what gets done. I am quite interested.

| How about organizing an after school program? Story time with a craft? Or a tutoring center?

I think she is leaning towards an event with younger girls. Not sure of what kind of a theme yet. Maybe to help them bridge to the next level or a fun day of some sort.
Thanks for the great ideas. Keep them coming.

organize a get up and go get togeather for the younger kids. THe younger children idalize the "teen agers" They play and have fun,,,all learning healthy habits at the same time. The chldren could learn new games, build self esteem, an lean about different health aspects. If you meet after school at a nearby park the hours could add up quickly and several girlscouts could get involved and earn a badge.

Different states have different rules about home baked items.. I know in Oregon, you can't sell baked goods unless you have a food handlers license... so at school noone brings in home baked items..

| She could bake cookies, sell them, and give the money to some great charity or buy a needy family in your town something they really need..

| When I was in girl scouts we would have a monthly birthday party and the elder focks home and bring cake and ice cream and put on a little show. They loved it at christmas time we could all come in on a saterday and bring one gift that we made for them and set up a christmas tree.

| My daughter organized a book drive to help supply a library for the childrens ward of a local hospital. Another girl made booklets for Daisy troop leaders with games and crafts ideas representing each Daisy petal. The third girl created a pamphlet that detailed how to care for rabbits and then got permission to got to a couple daycares with her bunnies and talk to the children about what it takes to raise one. You might also be able to go to google and get some other ideas.

| Thanks everyone! Our animal shelters won't let you work with the animals either. They have to do drives or clerical work until they are old enough.
|
|
|
|
- Try an elder care home, where she could read to them. - maintain or create a community garden - work at a childrens hospital (or wing) - reading / games.
|
|
|
|
animal shelters are funny.. ours won't allow youth volunteers to work there until the child is 16...

Thanks I will pass the ideas on to her. She just started working on the Silver in May. She has almost all the prerequist requirements done. So we are brain storming projects. This will be her second year as a cadette. She started a year earlier then most. She will be going into 7th grade.
I helped 4 girls get through most of the prerequists and they are all getting preped for the project. One is typing their school directory. One is doing a cheerleader day camp for kindergartners. The other two are undecided so far.

wow... I never heard of a 12 year old going for the silver award... I know several older girls... one did a project at an animal shelter.. another put books together and made a small library for a migrant camp...
but these girls were in high school... I hope you can find something appropriate for your daughter...
what about doing something for a womens shelter... or gathering baby supplies.. bottles, car seats, diapers, etc.. for poor women...

My twelve year old daughter is going to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award. She needs a 40 hour service project. It needs to be something GREAT. Not just a food drive or something typical. Those are important projects that she does participate in, but this particular award she wants to be !Impressive! However, we are clueless what to do. Please give us lots of great ideas. One thing we have been thinking about is organ donor awareness. She has two grandparents that have had liver transplants, but not sure what we would do for that.
Thanks Kris
