So my daughter came to me yesterday when I was buying Doritos crying and asked if I wanted to do a challenge with her. We're doing a water challenge. Anyone want to join us?

Ok. Starting a challenge for Nov 1st! I'm starting small for her. 2 glasses of water and 1 veggie per day.

dd told me yesterday she doesn't get more than 3 seconds at the water fountain at a time so she only gets that 3 seconds once or twice a day. That means she's going 6.25 hours with almost nothing to drink. She doesn't drink her juice boxes or water!! That is infuriating to me. Her class had fresh pears delivered Tuesday and there are fantastic looking apples today so I know she'll get her fruits in today. I gave her a water bottle in her backpack and told her to just drink from that and forget about the fountain.

That sounds fantastic! Fruits and veggies aren't a problem in my house since I switched to organic.

My dd had 1 glass of water before she left for school today and I'm about to go give her more.

I am getting ready to teach the girls about the food groups and am going to challenge them to eat thier food groups in a day. abcteach has some great pages for teaching about the food groups and here is a book that my SIL sent a link to me about:

Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your kids Eating Good Food (Hardcover)

It is at amazon. I have not looked at the book yet but plan too this weekend.

It's not too late. We have to find ways to make it a habit. There's a Spark article about it that may help you. The 10 Commandments for Parents I think it's called. We can't come down on them too hard when they don't eat them, we just have to be consistent and persistent. My daughter loves carrots and cucumber now. She never used to. Start small and make it a habit!

my kids will no eat fruit at all. Veggies - the only thing they will eat is green beans and they count those, no more than 6 go in their mouth. How did I screw this up?

My daughter fell off the pop wagon after 10 days. But I have to say she didn't miss it at all and she hasn't had any since the bbq on Sunday night. So she's making improvements too. She recently had some organic snacks and loved them! And her school is part of a government program now that sends fresh, seasonal, locally grown fruits and veggies to each kid bi-weekly. So we're making headway!

Good idea.
As our pediatrician says - we need to be consistent in our approach. Fortunately she does eat her veggies - when she wants. Generally i don't think she eats badly.

Just wanted to tell you that I'm so proud of you ladies for incorporating daily challenges in with your children! My daughter's a little young to understand goals and rewards (she's 18 months), but I did want to share my trick for getting her to eat her veggies, which you were discussing about a month ago. I give them to her first, before she gets the rest of her meal. I put her in her high chair and I give her the veggies, and she gobbles them down while I'm cutting up her meat and waiting for her pasta to cool. I found that if I gave her everything at once, she left the veggies, but if I gave them to her when she hungry, she ate them no problem!

Good luck!

On Sunday - I got so fed up with my daughter not listening that I decided to give her a smiley face (at my discretion) every time she did something I wanted. When she earns 5 smiley faces - she now gets a treat. The biggest bit of progress is changing her mindset from a treat being something edible like candy to a treat is something fun which causes her and me to smile - so it could be candy or ice cream but more importantly it could be doing an arts and crafts project, taking a walk, playing on the playground, my undivided attention, dancing...
So far we've had 2 good days! We'll see what happens today when she's with my mom.

No no, it's taking the food while you're cutting it up. And put a small plate to snack on on the table. I wouldn't encourage a child to take food from someone else's plate either. Glad you tried it though.

I don't have my daughter for 3 days starting today. So I can't oversee her water intake. But she's highly motivated! She was upset that she didn't get 4, only 3 in yesterday as she really wants to rent a new video game so it's working to an extent.

I tried a way to get my daughter to eat veggies that worked. I read about it in Today's Parent magazine and it worked like a charm. I chop up veggies for dinner and I ask her to keep her eye out for a mouse. Mice love carrots and celery and such and they're very sneaky. She of course chooses to be the mouse and it's a game of her sneaking carrots and cucumber and veggies from me. I always ALMOST catch the mouse and she's off giggling behind the couch munching on her raw veggies. Now, we don't even need to play the game. She eats carrots and dip, cucumber, celery, raw cauliflower and red and yellow peppers. We still play once in a while though.

She got her 4 glasses in yesterday and this morning she's armed with 4 glasses at granny and papas for the day. How is everyone elses little ones doing with the water challenge?

What a great idea to have a kids challenge. Maybe instead of a slurpee, have a fruit smoothie/ icee and limit it to 1 or 2 a day. Our favorite icee is orange juice, a splash of grapefruit juice and then blend a handful of frozen blueberries in the blender.
Its very refreshing. And I don't even like grapefruit.

I actually was searching the boards for tips on how to get toddlers to eat veggies and came across your board. That's cool your daughter is starting to drink more water. I have read on multiple occasions that we should take our weight, divide that number in half and that's the number of ounces we should drink. For me that's a whoppin' number, but on the other hand, I guess too much messes up electrolytes or something. Oh, and if you have any tips on how to get toddlers to eat veggies...now, back to my search.

Oh that's a good one. Very well timed too for us. I talked to my daughter this morning and she's game for a challenge. I told her she has to drink 4 glasses of water a day 7 days in a row and then I'll rent her a new video game. I had to resist the urge to reward her with food or something. My first instinct was to reward her with a slurpee. She's already had 2 today and she drank it quite willingly. I'm happy to teach her new habits gradually, and she's happy to be able to participate on Spark with me.

Did you read today's "healthy reflections" email? Here it is - maybe some ideas to be had -
Learning to love healthy food at a young age

You may have heard the phrase "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" and it is certainly true. Western culture stresses the importance of regular medical care almost as much as it does a healthy diet for children. But which do we take more seriously? A French fry certainly won't cause obesity as long as it is the exception and not the rule. We can all make better choices for our children's diets. This week, think about substituting a sugary snack or cereal for something more nutritious. Include whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables in your meals instead of going through a drive-thru. The healthy habits your children learn today come from your example and will impact them for the rest of their lives. Give them the best you can and their bodies will thank you.

I agree and like the water idea. I think it's so important to teach kids how to be healthy - eat right and exercise. gotta develop those good habits. Seems like she has good habits regarding her activity level. - keep reinforcing that. And as you said - water may be a good beginning - it's the best thirst quencher.

My daughter likes to drink juice, milk and soda (not that I give her soda) over water. i do water down the juice and use the milk to boost her caloric intake.

I've just started giving her the watered down juice or milk for dinner and then after dinner - it's water only.

She's underweight because she has a fast metabolism and she's very active with swimming, horseback riding, karate and daily walks with our dog. She's always bugging me for things like slurpees, ice cream cones and such. I don't want to teach her the same habits that got me in this position. I was thinking about starting with water since it's summer. It should be the easiest to get started with the biggest payoff. Maybe a reward at the end too?

Why is she "underweight?" motivation? eats enough? exteremly active with high metabolism.

I might be interested. I have a 4 yr old daughter who is on the small side. also very active, lean and healthy. she's much more interested in the social side of things or eating sweets than in sitting down and eating a well-rounded meal. I've been thinking about daily challenges for her. Means a change for the whole family!
