I agree with Kelly. Another thing to do if it continues to persist is to take a favorite toy away. Or make he write a letter of apology. Hope it helps.

Thanks Kelly. I did go through the talk about how would you feel, the Golden Rule, etc. I just don't know if it "clicked" in his brain. I hope so:)
Thanks, Donna

The best approach I have had in dealing with children and the things they will say...is trying to communicate it to them "how would you feel if someone spoke badly about you or made fun of you for something you were already uncomfortable about?". I just remind my children to treat people the way they want to be treated...sometimes it works and sometimes I have to keep reminding them.
I hope this helps.

Hi all,
Over the holiday weekend, we were at a cookout at my mother's house and my 9 year old walked into the kitchen where I was with my brother (who is obese) and said "Hey, who's that fat guy?" I'm assuming he just wanted attention. I told him to be quiet and stop and he just kept on, so my brother picked up a spoon and popped him on top of the head. That made my son really mad and then he went into a tirade/tantrum. I wasn't sure how to handle it. I was embarrassed and furious and was afraid I'd totally handle it wrong, so I pretty much didn't do anything until that night at bedtime after I had calmed down. I told him that it was not nice to tell people they're fat, skinny, old, etc., and various other things because that hurts their feelings. Then the very next day, we went to a cookout at a friend's house and he starts teasing the 7 year old boy and my daughter about being boyfriend/girlfriend. He just wouldn't shut up! We finally had to leave. I just don't know how to handle him. Anyone have any ideas? When I talk to him he says he understands and then he just does it again. HELP! and thanks, Donna
