Well I personally think your idea of an obstical course in your home is a wonderful, fun and very creative idea! It sounds like it would fit into your busy lifestyle and yet give her a safe, fun outlet to get fit and have fun - because at her age fun is a must I'm sure. Have you tried the Playhut line of tubes. They are great space savers if you don't have much room in your apartment. They just pop up and are great to crawl through and when she's done they fold flat and can store under her bed! We have a house, tent and a couple of tubes and my 19 month old loves to crawl through the tubes and will get up and run around it to crawl through it again. He loves it. Another good thing about them is they are sooo cheap. Hope this helps. Have fun.

How far is her daycare? Can you and her walk there instead of driving? This is what I do with my kids. It takes a 1/2 hour to walk to their school sometimes my son rides his bike there instead, but I still walk. Besides that my son is in Boy Scouts witch encourages them to exercise. I also know at the park and rec here where I live they have dance, sports and many other things just for little ones(her age). So you might want to look into something like that. But don't make it a big deal to her at this age. Don't say anything. You don't want her to grow up consumed by weight issue. Witch will bring her self confidence down.

my kids have always excersised with me. We would go hiking, swimming ... bike riding.. Even when they were little, we would strap them in a babyseat and ride our bikes with them attached...
We would play kickball...

I even had my kids outside pulling weeds with me in the garden...

There are lots of things you can do for excersise besides doing tapes...

My three kids love to workout with me. I put in a dvd and they try.. Or I tell them what to do like simon says and they love that jumping jacks stretching running in place.
We also go on walks everyday that it is nice out.
Good luck to you.

What about going for walks? My son is 4, and he loves going for walks! We may not go very far, but it's good exercise for him and good for him to get outside every day.

Dancing with her is a great idea and doesn't take much room. Is your apartment on a higher floor? Take the stairs instead of the elevator, even if it's only for part of the way up. Do you have a dog? I let my toddler and puppy loose in a big open room and they will literally chase each other until they are both out of breath... it's a great way for them to get exercise in the house, because it's been too cold to take them outside (plus I was on crutches for almost a month, so I couldn't do much with them as far as exercise goes).

Also, have you signed up for the family Health & wellness here on SparkPeople? You can get it by going to your account preferences and making sure it's checked. They have ideas for keeping your kids as healthy as you want to be yourself. Ideas to get them moving, fun snacks, etc..

I know there are 2 Kid tae-bo videos out there. BUt I also just saw somewhere a Denise austin kids tape. It had a few different things listed. You may have to do a search for it.

I have been thinking about the Y family membership as well.

What about a night out once a week. Bowling, roller or ice skating at a rink, I don't know where you live Right now we have about 3' of snow on the ground, so I would say like indoor soccor fields.
I had fun kicking the soccor ball around the yard with my 2 1/2 year old (before it snowed) even chasing him around the pine tree. He was laughing so hard it was fun.
I hope this summer to take him to Lake Michigan again which would be great just walking the beach plus jumping in the lake with the waves.

Check out these books that I saw reviews abuot here at SP. The family Fitness Fun book by Rose Kennedy $17
Dr. Sears' LEAN kids by Williams Sears, MD, Peter Sears, MD, and Sean Foy, MA $14.95

Just turn on the tunes, take her hands and start to dance....I do this with my 3 and 7 year old (should do it more).

We even make up our own dances when we pass by the ball-room dancing TV shows.

Sometimes we just wrestle.

She's not really into the Wiggles anymore, but we may go get her a Boobah video from the library. She LOVES that show (even though it kind of freaks me out a little!) and will get up and dance around with them most of the time.

We also thought about setting up an obstacle course in the apartment. Since we get home so late in the evening, it's hard to go back out somewhere, but I'm going to start getting my students to come play with her after school while I'm doing tutoring so she can get some exercise that way, too.

We got a family pass at the Y. Our little girl takes swimming lessons one day a week, she does gymnastics another day and we go for a family swim on Sundays.

A Wiggles video is a fabulous idea too. It can get you both moving and the opportunity to be silly together.

Find something that's fun for her. Go to a park on the way home? County soccer league? Gymnastics? Basketball court? Can you get her to help you do your strength training by counting the rep's for you. She'll want to join in too, I bet.
Make walking after dinner a habit (if you live in a safe place to walk at night).
Ask the caregiver to make it a priority for her to play outside during the day.

For me all I have to do is throw in a Wiggles tape dance around and the kids join in. They think it is fun and I like it because it gets them moving.

I'm frustrated and worried about my little one. She's 3 1/2, and is overweight already. It's not what she eats - she eats mostly fruits and veggies, drinks NO soda and almost no juice - only milk and water. She gets sweets rarely. It's more that she doesn't get enough exercise. My husband and I both work and we don't get home until around 6. Her daycare provider is wonderful, but my daughter is the biggest one there now, and she doesn't have enough opportunity to run and play like she did when the bigger boys were still there, because the sitter has two babies and can't just leave them to supervise mine outside. We live in an apartment, so it's not like we can run around the house a lot. I'm looking for fun, creative ways to get her some exercise because I don't want her to be overweight already. I don't want her to struggle for her entire life like I have.

I've thought of setting up an obstacle course in the apartment, but need other ideas. I've done well at getting my own exercise in, but now I need to start getting her moving, too!
