Sounds like a great idea to keep the house clean too! Making a game out of picking up, and seeing how fast you can do it gets you to exercise and gets the little ones to pick up - sounds great!

i have done many things with my little girl. she loves to go for walks at the walking park and often we race each other every other lap or we skip around the track. we have also danced around the living room for like 20 or 30 minutes to tunes and my favorite activity we have done on cleaning days is we use 2 boxes (one for Kitiara and one for me)and we set a timer we then race to see who can pick up the most items up around the room that are out of place. this is very fun and when you pick things up off the floor you get your squats for the day in. the winner usually gets to pick what is for dinner. this eliaviates the hmm what should I fix today moments in my house. one other thing for motivating your kids to workout with you that I have found is www.kidnetic.com this website is great it not only encourages your kids to be active through scavenger hunts and challenges it has great healthy recipes you can make with your kids. Kitiara loves doing this and often challenges me to do the activities to beat her score. you might want to check out the weisite for yourself you can really learn alot and the thing I like about it is it is geared towards kids so it is easy to manuver around the site. well, I hope this helps you out.

I just found out that the YMCA has an exercise class for kids... my boys seem to like going to the play room while I do my workout, and this seems great to put my 4-year-old in on Monday mornings while I do my workout. Maybe he'll even take a good nap then too!!!

Tae-bo has 2 of them for kids. One is called Kicks, and the older one is called Jr. They have kids on the videos too.

Mine likes to kick and punch my free standing punching bag. Or grab the small hand weights. I have a couple, but I do have one that can be 1 LB. It has a "handle around it so you can use your hands open without dropping it. And the weights screw onto the sides of the hand part. I think without anything is 1 LB then you can "2 lbs" weights which are actually 1/2 pound each to equal a total of 2 lbs when added. I will see what they say on them.

Mine 2 1/2 year old went out sledding this weekend. Nice that we have a hill in our back yard. I tried to go with him, but he wanted to play on the swing set instead. Later he went with the neighbors and my husband.

They came with a beginner set dumbbells, jumprope, handgrips and a bag that you hang on the wall. I don't remember exactly where i got it it was a few years ago. But most likely at walmart or target. Its red and black

SARAHM9: Where did you find 1-pound dumbbells? I don't like my boys to play with my heavier ones, but those would be nice!

My boys seem to like some of the ideas posted in here, thanks!

There are some kids excercise videos out their exercise with Elmo and others. I have a catalog but can't find it right now, I'll keep looking for it. But I think I have seen them in Walmart too. zMy 3 year old loves to work out with me even without videos. I have a 1-2 lbs hand weights that he uses and his own small blowup excercise ball too. and my husband made a small excerise step for him. He loves it.

Does anyone know if there are any parent-child exercise tapes around? My oldest one gets into it with me, but my youngest is another story. Maybe if I could find one the three of us could do together...

Maybe you could find a work out tape that you and your boys like? I do yoga sometimes and my 6 yr. old daughter loves doing it with me. Or just crank up your favourite tunes and you and the boys could bop around to them. Even just 10 min. of that is better than nothing.

What about incorporating your kids into a routine at home? I do turbo jam videos 2-3 days a week and my 5 year old likes to "dance" with me. He needs some exercise too, plus, he is tired by the time I am done and wants to go to bed earlier! We also have tried doing different types of activities while I exercise, I bought him a dry erase board that he draws on and when I turn of the treadmill I guess what each picture is. Something to think about, good luck, I know its hard.

I live in Wisconsin, so the weather depends on the season... and right now it's too cold for outside!!! (At least for me.)

My work schedule is aweful for a regular routine, but I have joined the YMCA as their fees are based on your income. The boys seem to like the play room, but it makes me feel like we're always running around. They're gone by their dad Tuesdays and Thursdays, and every other weekend... I normally work open to close those days (9am to 8pm). I'm off Mondays, and that's pretty much my only "free" day.

I just wish there was an easier way to do it. If I try to set them up in one room with a video while I do an exercise one in another room, I get about 5-10 mintues in before they're beating each other up or needing something.

When I had two I would strap them in the jogger and run. They absolutely loved it and were the best coaches a gal could have. "Faster Mom!"

Now that I have 3 it's harder. I have to wake up at 5:30 to run because there's no way I'm buying a triple jogger. Sometimes I will pack them all in the bike trailer and haul that load around a bit. That's a GREAT workout!

I think it's really important to find the time, because it is so beneficial to your sanity. My day goes so much better if I can get in that half hour run in the morning. Good luck to you!

I am glad my gym has a supervised play room. I take my eight year old grandkid and he wont stop moving and getting into things.

I have the same issues. I have two boys (5 & 7) and for the first 5-10 minutes at the gym they're pretty good, but then they get bored and want to start playing on the equipment. So I try to go when not a lot of people are going (I go to a private/small gym open 24-hours). I've gotten out of the habit lately though 'cause I just moved, but am slowly getting back on track.

I presume that a gym with a child minder is not within you're budget.

"Playing with kids" is listed as a cardio activity. There are lots of other ativities listed in the Other Activities list that you might all be able to do together.

My dd does the WATP DVD's with me, she's 6 yo. She has favorite parts - like when you take 2 steps forward and back...she'll say let me know when my favorite part is coming and she rushes over to do it and then continues on for a while. My dd plays (inside) while I do my DVD.

Heavy housework is even listed in the aerobic options. It is easier to be active with them when the weather is good. Before my grandkid (now eight) found Xbox, I use to play in the garage with him.

In my opinion, housework IS exercise! Push yourself to work quicker in order to raise your heart rate or use wrist or ankle weights.

I don't know what your schedule looks like or what the weather is like where you live, but if it's nice you could take them to a playground to play and you could use a band to do "weights".

These are just some ideas. I have 2 very young kids and right now I'm sacrificing sleep to get in my exercise. I hate losing the sleep, but I feel really good when I get on the scale and after I exercise.

Good luck!

I'm a single mom of two young boys (4 and 5). How do I find the time to exercise, without sacrificing any more of my sleep (I already do most of my housework after they go to bed)?
