OK, I'm reposting this note so it doesn't get lost and buried...

Hi all,

I did it, I formed a team just for us... I called it " parenting Pre-teen Girls!" That way there's no age discrimination. (grin)

I know that we are not ready for the teens, but they are coming quickly, aren't they?

Anyway, come join the team... the site is:

http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/group
s_individual.asp

Or, you can go to my website here and click on the link at the bottom of my page (I don't have a graphic yet for the team), and join that way. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Hi all!I swear I have been here for like an hour trying to catch up on what I have missed.Sherre I saw something way back that you said that I wamted to comment on but I can not remember what it was.I jsut remember thinking I wanted to say something maybe it will come to me before I get off of here.
All of my kids really like those gummy vitamins as well.We tried the gumball ones and Anneliese says they are gross. The boys made a funny face but will chew them anyway.
Just wanted to say that I am way to old to be working 2 jobs 80 hours a week so I went to give notice at my day job because even though the hours at Sonic are later and it is harder work I am making more. And they offered me the store management position and even gave me the pay before I am actually able to keep the hours. So I gave Sonic notice instead. So hopefull I am going to be around more.So I am off to go find this group Cathy made.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

It went as well as it could. I told her that the cat got hit by a car and I took her to the doctor but she didn't make it. That is as detailed as I got. She cried, I cried again and we decided to get one of those concrete yard art things for the yard to make kind of a memorial. She didn't want to go to karate because she said she was too upset, but we went, I told her the exercise would help her keep her mind off of it and if she thought she was getting sad to just punch harder! (thats what I did with turbo jam workout yesterday!).

Hope ya'll are having a great weekend!
See you on the new thread!

Lisa,

Our pet bird got out a year ago, and the only thing that I could do was tell her. I took her somewhere quiet so that we could talk (away from home) and told her what had happened. Then, I was ready for the tears and the what have you's. How did it go?

Sherre,

Thanks, I didn't get a nap today and hope to sleep like the traditional log tonight.

Lisa,
I am so sorry!!!! You need to be honest with her explain what happened and cry with her. Try to do it before the younger one gets up. Try to bring to light the good times she had with your cat and that you will all miss her. Find a spot in the yard to do a memorial spot and have her help you put it together. Hope I was helpful and in time.

HELP!!!

Our cat got hit by a car today while Jessie(8) was at school. I took her to the vet and she could not be saved. I haven't told her yet but when her sister gets up from her nap (4)- she will probably blurt it out. I need to know the best way to help her with this. This is a first for us. I will probably have to give her the news before this is replied to, so any suggestions of making the weekend easier for her, let me know.

Lisa

Thanks!

Thanks, Sherre,

I'm actually typing this from my own computer. But, I was up until 0400 this morning and then got back up at 0700! I would have been better off going to bed and doing it today. I am going to have to take a break today and lie down for a while. That's all there is to it.

Take care,

Good evening!

I'm typing this from the library as my computer's down again. I'm in the middle of reformating the hard-drive. Ugh! It's not something that I like to do, but I didn't know what else to do with the thing. All of a sudden nothing was working any more. So, I spent the afternoon moving what I could onto CD's and now I've got a few things back on. When Stephie's book club meeting here is over, I'll get back at it. I just didn't want you to think that I was ignoring you... it's just that I've been unable to get on.

I hope I'll be back tomorrow.

Good morning all,
I have been catching up on posts this morning and just wanted to say welcome to the new moms. You are not alone and we know how you feel.
Cathy the idea of a team sounds good to me.
Sherre, take care of yourself, I hope you are feeling better.

We are moved into the new house and it's wonderful to be here but it's also complete chaos. I am just trying to keep routines the same for the girls and work on everything else one little step at a time. I will be glad to sleep in this weekend though and to have a little time to put things away.

I have to get the girls up but I wanted to check in with you all.

Been there, done that and just (I think) finished up with that type of period. No, didn't have anything to do with Aunt Flow either. Tom seems to think that it might be pain... my hip's been acting up. Who knows. But, just don't give up on yourself. You've got some wonderful little reasons there to get and stay healthy. As do I.

Hugs to you and know that I/we understand totally!

Here's something for you that I just found in one of my groups.... thought that you'd enjoy it as much as I did:

Calories That Don't Count

The following food and situations have no calories to speak of ...

OTHER PEOPLE'S FOOD: A chocolate mousse that you did not order has no calories. Therefore, have your companion order dessert and you taste half of it.

INGREDIENTS IN COOKING: Chocolate chips are fattening, about 50 calories a tablespoon. So are chocolate chip cookies! However, chocolate chips eaten while making chocolate chip cookies have no calories whatsoever. Therefore make chocolate chip cookies often but don't eat them.

FOOD ON FOOT: All food eaten while standing has no calories. Exactly why is not clear, but the current theory relates to gravity. The calories apparently bypass the stomach flowing directly down the legs and through the soles of the feet into the floor, like electricity. walking seems to accelerate this process, so that a frozen custard or hot dog eaten at a carnival actually has a calorie deficit.

CHILDREN'S FOOD: Anything produced, purchased or intended for minors is calorie-free when eaten by adults. This category covers a wide range, beginning with a spoonful of baby tapioca -- consumed for demonstration purposes -- up to and including cookies baked and sent to college.

UNEVEN EDGES: Pies and cakes should be cut neatly, in even wedges or slices. If not, the responsibility falls on the person putting them away to "straighten up the edges" by slicing away the offending irregularities, which have no calories when eaten. If pie or cake is neatly cut, but the remainder is not easily divisible into equal servings, it's also permissible to even things up ... without calorie consequence.

TV FOOD: Anything eaten in front of the TV has no calories. This may have something to do with radiation leakage, which negates not only the calories in the food but also all recollection of having eaten it. Entire no-calorie dinners are now manufactured and frozen for this purpose.

FOOD THAT DOESN'T TASTE GOOD: doesn't count. This is an enormous category covering a diverse range including airline food, cafeteria meals, and dinner at your sister-in-law's. Also dinners manufactured to be eaten in front of the TV.

ANYTHING SMALLER THAN ONE INCH: contains no calories to speak of. For example: chocolate kisses, maraschino cherries, cubes of cheese.

LEFT-HANDED FOOD: If you have a drink in your right hand, anything eaten with the other hand has no calories. Several principles are at work here. First of all, you're probably standing up at a cocktail party (see "Food on Foot"). Then there's the electronic field: a wet glass in one hand forms a negative charge to reverse the polarity of the calories attracted to the other hand. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it's reversible if you're left-handed.

CHARITABLE FOODS: Girl Guide cookies, bake sale cookies, ice cream socials and church strawberry festivals all have a religious dispensation from calories. It's in the Bible.

CAKES WITH WRITING ON THEM: Primarily fat, starch and sugar, all cakes are horrendously fattening. However, the calories can be eliminated simply by inscribing "Happy Birthday, Charlie" or "Good Luck, Alice" in colored icing. Not only is it unnecessary to decline, it's impolite.

FOOD ON TOOTHPICKS: Sausages, cocktail franks, cheese and the like are all fattening unless impaled on frilled toothpicks. The insertion of a sharp object allows the calories to leak out the bottom.

LEFTOVERS: An extra pork chop, the crust of bread, half a Twinkie, anything intended for the garbage has no calories regardless of what happens to it in the kitchen.

FOOD EATEN QUICKLY: If you are rushed through a meal, the entire meal doesn't count. Conversely, if you have ordered something fattening and now regret it, you can minimize its calories by gulping it down.

CUSTOM MADE FOOD: Anything somebody made "just for you" must be eaten regardless of the calories because to do otherwise would be uncaring and insensitive. Your kind intentions will not go unrewarded. (See "Charitable Foods.")

Lisa,

I let Stephie do her own hair. That usually stops most of the screaming about that. She has nice hair that looks good most any way she does it. I just wish that she'd not yell at me if her hair doesn't do what she wants. I try hard to stay calm and "ignore" her (like I really could!) until she either calms down, does it the way she wants, or asks for help (nicely of course!).

Take care,

Cathy

Happy Wednesday to you all. Well, we had the "hair" issue again this morning, this is getting old LOL She has SO much hair that is it just gonna pull, no matter what, tanglefree spray and all, I do it as slow as I can but she still gets into a frenzy ! I try to stay calm but I tell ya, it is hard! I don't like her going to school after we have an argument, so I am working on the calm part !!! Anyway! That was this morning, (as most)!!

Sherre, I had the vertigo thing awhile back and it lasted so long I went to the doc, they didn't really figure out much but gave me some medicine- what caught me as funny was the warning on the bottle "may cause dizziness"!! I laughed and laughed about that one!!! It finally went away.

Oh, about the vitamins, we do the GummiVites, they have to remind me to give them to them somedays, they like those too. I ran out this week and they are telling me to make sure to pick up more!

That was my 2 cents for this morning!! Have a great day!

Welcome! It's great to have everyone here, "old" moms, and the "new" moms! The more of us the more we can cry on each other's shoulders! Stephie lost TV for the rest of the week this evening. I asked her to pause the movie and come get her plate (I was letting us eat in the living room so that she could finish watching it) and she had a FIT! So, that's that. No more TV for the week. I told her that I'll not tolerate that kind of behavior.

I've got a proposition for all of us: It's just this, would you be interested in forming a "real" team? I could start it, and then let you know where it is - put a link either here and/or on my site. But, what would you like to call it? Our girls are growing up, so maybe something like "Moms with soon to be pre-teen girls?" I know, that's a bit lengthy, isn't it? Anyway, I just thought that I'd throw that out for everyone to muddle over.

Sherre, I'm glad you are getting settled back in to normal life. I also hope that both you and Emily feel better soon. Can't wait to see the pictures! If the vertigo doesn't go away soon, please do consider seeing a Dr about it, OK?

Take care,

We stopped in Austria and we spent a night on a Island in German. When I have some time I will include some picture on my site.
I hope Stephiane is ok.

I'm not sure if she'll like that or not, but we'll see. There are some things she wears that you can see that she's developing a bit.

Oh, I took Stephie to the Dr. yesterday for a followup. Her ear infection is gone, but I knew that. But, there is a suspicion that she might be asthmatic. So, now she's got something else to worry about. I told her that she was the same this morning as she was yesterday morning. But, she can't seem to see it!

Sherre,

I'm so sorry that the trip was so bad! When you feel up to it, I can't wait to hear about it, though. Sorry to hear about the Strep throat! Been there twice with Stephie... once she was all of 18 months old! Couldn't figure out why her temp wouldn't go down and stay down. Hope you both feel better soon.

Stephie actually had a great week last week. She tried hard and got into the treasure box here at home not once but twice! I am so proud of her for that. Today has not been a good day, but it's also a let down. It's back to school and back to every day life. She also found out that her teacher (actually the second one this year she's had) is going to have surgery and won't be back until next fall. Her last day will be on Thursday. Stephie's devastated. She just doesn't know what to think about all of these changes, you know?

Welcome, (sorry, I forgot your screen name) - from Oklahoma. You've found a place where we all understand totally what it's like to have Drama Queens and the sass experts! Not to mention the temper tantrums! The twos had nothing on what she goes through these days!

Well, take care, I've got some things to do and then I need to work on our budget.

Hey Cathy,
Glad to hear you're doing alright. Thanks for checking in. I am taking a small break before getting back to packing and cleaning.
I'm exhausted, I feel horrible, Kayleigh is going at 100 mph today, and we have to leave in less than 2 hours for Shayla's 2nd performance (last night was fabulous!!).

Oh, and did I mention that the apartment manager has two couples who are interested in the apartment and has asked to show the place to them tonight? That's why I am cleaning more than packing today. Ugh!!! I will be so glad when this is over, I don't even care if the new house is unpacked, I just want to be there.

Needless to say food and exercise have gone out the window. I figure by the end of next week things will be much calmer (movers will be here Monday) and then maybe I can start at least exercising again.

Hello all,
I sure missed a lot. I had to go back and read to see how everyone is doing.

I know all about that guilt trip about working and being gone too much. That's when I tell her how important it is that we use our time wisely in the evenings, instead of fighting let's read together or snuggle and talk. Sometimes it works.

It's spring break this week. Shayla is actually with my parents attending a day camp for acting. They're actually going to have 2 performances this weekend. I'm very excited for her.
So it's just me and the little one this week which works out well for me and moving. I got quite a bit done on Saturday and took a couple of loads over yesterday. Everyday this week after work I will take a load over. It's very exciting to finally be a homeowner. It's a gorgeous house and I am so happy to finally have the keys and be moving in. Everything seems so big right now (there's no furniture). We're officially moving in a week from today.
Anyway, I have been thinking about all of you and wanted to get back in touch.
Take care,

Good morning all,

This is just a quick note... I'm not going to be on as much this week as Stephie's home from school for Spring Break. I'm going to be doing my best to keep her active and happy this week with things like trips to the park, trips to Grandma's to go swimming (and for me to swim too!), and we've also got two Dr.'s appointments scheduled for this week. On top of that, I want to get my closet cleaned out completely, get some homework done, and keep the house up. Tom's going to be home on Friday and we've already talked about it being a Daddy/Daughter day. I hope. Just as long as his boss doesn't come in and change his mind at the last moment like he did last week.

Not much else new today...

Have a good day/week...

But here it's combined with sheer panic! Good grief, she's 8! It's not as though I'll never be home. It's just that sometimes I wonder if maybe we aren't together too much!

yes I am.It is not quite waiting on tables though it is a drive in and you can either stay in your car or there are a few tables to sit at on the patio.Someone else here said that should be good exercise and help out a lot.I honestly did not even think of that when I went after the job.I was just thinking about I know a few girls that do it at a different location and I know how much money they are making. So the exercise is just an added bonus.
I wish we could go swimming.I love it.It feels like forever since I went.A few more weeks and we should be able to go.The water is still way too cold.
Well I will talk to you all later.I am working at the pizza place from 9-5 and the other from 5:15 - about 12:30.
Anneliese tried to give me such a quilt trip over this last night. She had these huge alligator tears telling me I will never be home,or go to her softball games,ect,ect.....she says she misses me.I haver only had 2 jobs for what 3 days?Plus her dad is home with her.She was trying to get Mcdonalds for dinner. She didn't want what I was planning on cooking.
I hope everyone has a good weekend health wise and child wise.

Good morning all,
I'm here and much more with-it today than I was yesterday. (grin) I'd gotten like three hours of sleep the night before and wasn't worth much of anything yesterday. So, I pretty much stayed off of the 'net yesterday. After I deleted some things that I'd meant to save I was afraid to do much more on the computer. (grin)

Anyway, it looks as if you've been having quite a discussion... I'll have to find the time sometime today to try and go through it and read everything... I'm also going to be doing bathrooms, laundry, dust and vacuum, and homework. Then, when I pick up Stephie from school we might be going swimming at my MIL's. I hope, I could sure use it!

Take care,

It is ok to have a favorite as long as you can do so without them knowing. My mom definatly has a favorite. Now I am not sure if it is just her favorite out of my kids or if it includes my brothers as well.My brother lives near her.He has 2 boys. But come to think of it I sort of have a favorite of his.I think that is because when he was born he was only 1 1/2 pounds and his mom spent forever in the hospital and almost died he came home before she did.So he stayed at my house for a bit and we helped to take care of him.
Cathy you know I not only interviewed yesterday I started. What was I thinking......help!! No I will be ok.You should have seen me trying to roller skate and carry food out to cars.It was a sight.I have not really been roller skating since I was I don't know 16 maybe.I was very surprised I did not land on my butt or spill anything.Guess I will try again tonight I can only get better right????!!

Hey, Kim,

Good luck with the interview... I know how nerve-wracking those can be.

Sorry to hear that your family's not felt well. Stephie's had pretty bad allergies recently, and then this morning I heard "Mommy, I just threw up!" Needless to say I kept her home from school. She seems fine now, about two hours later, but that's with Pepto in her tummy! I hope this isn't something that's going around. I'm thinking that it just might be due to stress and her allergies and what have you. I hope.

Kendra, I didn't want you to think I was saying you shouldn't take the tv away. I know the situations are differnt. I do find it funny how diffrent kids can be. I give you so much credit. I have a hard time keeping it going and I work part time.We do more after school. My husband get home after 7pm most nights. So I do 90% of the child care and all the everthing else. My husband has never cooked his dinner. I do all the shopping . So Paul has it really good.He makes the money and I spend it.(haha)

I have decided to let Shayla earn some TV time for tonight. If she will help me take out the trash, put laundry away, and help with dishes she can watch 2 hours of TV.

It's because I'm a pushover and Fridays are so hard because all I want to do is order pizza, put a movie in, and relax. But at least she'll have to earn it back. What do you guys think?

Kendra,

As I said in the previous note, we also use TV time to "punish" (for lack of being able to pick out the right word at the moment). She gets about one hour a day... some shows are not allowed, but most of the Disney are. I just don't like the ones with all the fighting and what have you. (So, go figure, why did I let her talk me into Kim Possible???, but I won't let her talk me into the American Dragon one?)

We are also lucky to have Tom's parents very close (walking distance)... it helps a lot. Right now they are up north, but that's OK... I'm able to watch their home for them easier.

Well, I'll be back later, I'm going to be upset if I don't get some homework done today...

Sherre,

I worked for years as an RN, but when Stephie was born I forgot to renew my license as I wasn't working at the time. By the time I realized it, I'd have to take the boards over again. Since I graduated from Nursing School in 1979, that would be quite something!

I've worked from home ever since Stephie was born. First I had an In-Home licensed day care (I LOVED that job!, truly I did.), but Tom lost his job and we had to downsize and we lost the house. There went "Lucky's Kids." For about five years after that I did telemarketing from home... not the best or most fun job, but for a long time it brought in grocery money and kept us from going under totally. Now, and for the past almost a year, I'm training for Medical Transcription. I'm doing the training on-line from home and hope to have a job here at the house when I'm done. Poor Stephie gets totally panicked when I mention that I might have to work away from the house. You'd think that I'd said I was going to cut off her arm!

So, to make a long story short, I'm currently not working and things are tight, but I'm aiming to be working by the end of the summer.

Cathy

Oh, I forgot to add that I use the TV (or lack of it) also for "punishment." And, I understand the "seeing but not seeing" things... we just call it "pick your battles" Some things are just not worth fighting over...

Hi Sherre,
Yes I am very lucky to have my parents near by. They used to live in Eeastern Oregon where I grew up and we'd only see them every few months because it was a long drive.

Luckily for me my other daughter is 2 so by taking TV away from Shayla I'm not affecting the other one. And actually it isn't a huge punishment, they don't watch TV on school nights anyway, that's a standing house rule.
We have a crazy schedule with my job, we leave at 5:35 in the morning and typically don't get home until after 5 at night so dinner, homework, baths, and "snuggle" time with reading have to be crammed in and I try to get the girls in bed by 7 no later than 8. There's no time for TV.
Weekends are typically filled with sports games, activities with friends and family, etc. although I have cut way back on that because it's too exhausting and I have found that all three of us need at least 1 day of down time if not two.

I am a very easy going person but Shayla was screaming at the top of her lungs how much she hates me, she hit walls, slammed doors, kicked the door so hard I thought she broke her foot, straight to my face told me "no" over and over, refused to do her homework, refused to put things away, and I knew taking TV time and her hard earned money away would calm her down eventually and it did.

TV time, money, and toys are bargaining chips, they are what works best. 1,2,3 works great with the baby but Shayla at times does not care about the circumstances.

Anyway, it's time for us to get out the door. I will chat with you all later. Have a great day.

You are luck that you have family to be there to help you.I use Tv as my behavior fixer. When They are not in line I turn it off. I have never made it go away for weeks. I find it hard to tell one child they can not watch when there are 2 others. I have always used 1 2 3 and they seem to straighten out by three. I am more of a roll with it mom. I am aware of most things going on but do give them some freedom, but not too much.

Good morning all,

This morning sealed the brownies that late in the day (it was from 6:30 - 7:30). By the time Stephie got to bed it was after 9, and her normal bedtime is 8. With the game and Tom's yelling I'm sure she didn't get to sleep right away. This morning she had a major melt-down. The guidance counselor can't tell me that it's because she's bored during the week! Monday we went to the park and Tuesday we went to Brownies. This is only Wednesday. Something doesn't fit here. Tom actually heard the attitude and screaming, and got right into the middle of it. I walk away, but he can't. He's got to try and 'fix' things if he can. So, that escalated things a bit. Anyway, to make a long story short, no late night after school activities. She has to be home by 6 and be done for the day. He did give in and say that I can look into a troop after school that meets in the school... kind-of like a club. I'll look into it and think about it.

I've got a lot of homework myself to do today, so I'll be on and off... I've also got some minor housework. Have a great day all,

Thanks, Kendra,

I know that she's just testing limits - and that she does this constantly!, but at the same time it's frustrating.

One good thing is that her behavior, for now, is improving some. She seems to understand that I'm trying to get her into things but that it all depends on her behavior. Tonight we are going to try and visit a nearby Brownie Girl Scout troop and see if she might like that.

(Shaking head) - I just don't quite know what to do right at the moment, but I also know that the summer is coming up and that she's going to be busy most of the time with camp... (the county has a series of weekly camps for kids starting at only about 20.00 per week!)... It just depends on how much money we have that week when I've got to go sign her up!

Take care,

Cathy

Cathy,
I really think you are doing the right thing. Every family is different and she needs to realize that what her friends or anyone else get to do isn't always what she is going to get to do.
As her mother you know what the limits are for her and for your family whether it be financially, with time, etc.. You do what you believe is best.
I have the same problem with Shayla as far as being grateful for what we have and enjoying what we have instead of it never being enough. She seems to think she is somehow owed (that's how she acts) more than what she gets. She talks about friends that have "everything."
It's extremely frustrating and I can totally relate.
Hang in there.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback... Maybe Stephie is getting a bit bored during the school week, but I do my best to have her do other things... when she's not grounded. That's the problem, she's been so nasty at times that she just seems to beg to be grounded. One day she admitted that she did it on purpose so she wouldn't have to deal with the girl next door. Not a best choice on her part.

Right now I'm trying to teach her to be thankful for what she gets and not always be pushing, pushing for more! Sorry... I had to just remind her of that. She's not happy with this afternoon at the water park and the movie (with popcorn and soda) with her friend (she's not even supposed to have any TV time until after school on Wednesday!). Now she wants more, more, more! Ugh! It's not as though I don't do for her. Sorry for the outburst... I'm just a bit frustrated with her at the moment.

Cathy,
You have to go with what your gut feeling is. I know that this age is very stressful for them. In my last Brownie meeting we were taling about conflicts between girls. I was suprised how many of my 14 girls have issues with each other. There were at least 4 diffrent pairs of problems. I wonder if she is saying some of those things to get your attention. I do not feel it is your fault at all. I know with my older daughter she dosen't like to talk to me about her problems. She feels I do not listen.(not true) My mom is her sounding board. It would be great if she had someone like that. (not the school counselor) I don't think the Y is the only answer. Do you have a church Youth group? Can you set up some play dates? I hope I have helped.

No problem, Sherre,

We all vent here at one time or another. Today is going to be interesting for me. Stephie's off of school due to teacher's planning day. If her behavior is good we might go to the water park.

I do want to bounce something off of you gals too...

I had Stephie talk to the counselor at her school because she was constantly saying (when mad) "I hate myself... I want to hurt myself!" The only thing that I heard back from the counselor is that somehow it's my doing because I don't let her do more social things after school and on weekends... No, she's not in the scouts or clubs at school - I asked her to look into things and she just wouldn't at the start of the school year. But, I'm supposed to somehow come up with the money to get her to the Y or something for after school activities. She plays out in the yard, sometimes with the neighbor kid... there's not an awful lot of kids her age here in this neighborhood. And, to be honest, the ones that are her age live next door to us and I don't agree with a lot that goes on over there. I don't think that V. is a good example/playmate for Stephie. But, I feel as if I'm being forced into something that my "mommy sense" is telling me isn't the best thing for my kid... what would you do? There's really no money for the Y programs, and we are already planning on the summer programs provided by the county... that's going to be some 60.00 plus the field trips for the summer. Any suggestions?

Thanks for letting me vent this time!

It will be. I am a little edgy about it though. I have never went on vacation with out my husband. I will miss him. I wish he was able to go. I also hope I will be able to log on to sparks. It has helped me so much.
