I also use the website www.calorieking.com to look up nutritional values of foods that are not listed here.

I can also recommend this site:
http://www.nutritiondata.com/

I've entered a whole recipe on there, to calculate what the nutritional analysis would be per portion.

Yes, it's digital. It says Chefmate on it.
It's really neat, you can put things one at a time and keep totalling, and you can even have different users totalling for the day.
It give Bread Equivalent, Calories, Fat Cal, Carbs, Protein, Fat, Sat Fat, Fiber, Sugars, cholesterol and sodium for a big list of items. The list comes in a handy book that is laminated! (hooray, for kitchen use!)

This looks like the scale, but they want 59.99 online!!

NINEOF12, did you get a digital scale at Target for $15 or the other kind? Just curious. I just bought the other kind of scale for oz., etc. and it broke after a day and a half Looking for a new kind. Scales really help with portions too. Thanks!

I bought a nutritional scale for $15 at Target! I think it's a worthwhile investment.

Hi
I ahve noticed the tracker has colires listed differently then say -the package. When the egg carton lists one thing and the egg on SP is another...

I do too have Portion distortion
So its possible I am either eating too much or thinking the portion was more oz then it actually was..

When we say fist size..is that also an inch etc thick..or just the diameter.. which is about less than 4 inches..KWIM?

i think its time I get out my scale and measuring cups for a week or so..and retrain my eye to correct sizes/portions.

There is a great article under resources I believe called Portion Distortion that helps with sizes of portions. I got the little lady on my page by going to myvirtualmodel.com and making her, right clicking and saving to my computer and then adding her to my Sparkpage! It's a fun website! Also, I measure everything practically to make sure I am eating the right amount and am buying a scale tommorrow to help even more. Good luck everybody!!!

One thing to keep in mind, is that 4ozs of Chicken or any protien is a serving, 4ozs is about the size of your fist. Hope this helps.

Hi I am new to all this and I am very worried that I cannot get the meals right. I either get the portions wrong or I don't have enough cals; by the end of the day I am suposed to eat 1200 and have a job totting up this amount. Then today I found that the calories that the meal planner says are not as the packets say, and so I am eating even less,
I have I know a long way to go but I am finding this very hard!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that info about some foods is listed wrong! Thought I was going crazy! LOL! I always double check my numbers before I enter it in my day. Those little mistakes can add up! I still love this whole place though!! It's the best! Keep up the good work everybody!

Thanks a lot!!! I've seen Morning Star and Boca burgers and thought about giving them a try. Sometimes I can't stand meat and thought I couldn't give it up. Thanks so much for your input!!!

I've noticed the same problem, a lot of the nutrition info that other SparkPeople have entered is wrong. Even if it's off by just 10 cal, I always go in and re-enter everything because I want my tracking to be correct. It is annoying.

BEX0920 you definitely don't need meat to get protein! I hate meat and I always earn my daily minimum protein. You're probably in a rut because you're eating fatty meat late at night. Try vegetarian products made with soy instead. Morningstar Farms has an awesome veggie corn dog that could pass for the real thing anyday!

Also be careful when chosing those added by another subscriber. I have found several items , like frozen dinners, that have the wrong info listed. I dont know if they are typo's or whats going on. It would be wonderful if everything was in there. But for now, we just have to add or pick the closest equivelant.

One way to do this is to click on the nutrition page, and then click on "add food". Type in the food, "chicken" for example. Choose the type from the list that pops up. I tried this for you, I'm a vegetarian, so meat/poultry portions aren't my thing, but here's what I came up with: I think one of the choices that popped up was something like "chicken breast, no skin." Since that seemed like a common food, I chose that and then it offered portion size choices, you could choose "one breast" or you could enter a certain number of ounces (or grams). Once you enter that information, the calorie content will pop up on your day's menu.

You can also try using google to find calories of certain foods.

Hope this helps!

How do you know how many calories is in a piece of chicken breast, or a pork chop? Things that don't have calories clearly posted on the package.

Do you mean that you have problems estimating portion size? I think there is an article in the Resource Center for how to go about doing that. I usually measure my food with measuring spoons/cups, but I do sometimes have to estimate weight (I don't have a diet scale).

As far as meat, do you not like it, but are making yourself eat it to get enough protein? I'm a vegetarian, and I've found that I get enough protien (albeit on the lower end of the range) just by eating whole grains, nuts, beans, soy foods and stuff like that.

I am trying so hard to lose weight, but am in a dieting rut. I have meat with dinner always because you need protein, but I have a hard time with it. I can keep track of foods that are prepackaged because serving size and calories are printed clearly on the package. Does anyone have this problem with food? There are a lot of foods that don't have calorie content listed. Does anyone have advice on what they do in this situation?
