Controlling another human being can extremely difficult, I would say impossible, most of us have a hard enough time controlling our own bodies. Sometimes we make people rebel when we try to make them do something that they are not ready to do. I know you love your dad, but he has to decide what is best for him.

You have had a couple of good suggestions there. Really though, it does sound impossible. My dad has never been good with his health, but a big scare (chest pains and pre-diabetes) has had him smarten up, and he is a new man.
How about some tough love? Your mum would have to be in on it though. If he wants to watch TV, then his snacks have to be healthy. Otherwise, the TV is out the door!

Hi Dana,

perhaps your dad could be given salads or even just a few crunchy carrots when he asks for food!

Not all the time.. try it for a few times. Just tell him that the food is not ready, and that you will try to get it ready soon... in the mean time 'please dad'...

Perhaps, a healthy smoothie... fruits...

During regular meal times too, he can have healthier options prepared for him! May be the spark food tracker can guide you...

Hope this helps..

Hihi,

I decided a few days ago that I would try to get my Dad to become involved in SP. He's been saying he "needs to lose weight" for years, but has never taken any steps. I thought maybe if I took the initiative to make him a SP account and get him started with logging and tracking food/activities he would learn and slowslowly change his lifestyle.

However, that's really not the case. It's killing me...his BMI is 43.2!! I'm 22, I want him to be around for my eventual wedding and to see grandkids in the future- but at the rate he's going, that's just not going to happen.

Whenever I see him eating I lose my appetite. It just puts me off food. I've only had 180 calories today [forgot my lunch at home...refused to eat out at work], because whenever I go to the kitchen to fix something, he's there on the couch or at his desk or something. My mom doesn't exactly do much to stop him from eating either. Of course, if he doesn't get popcorn or whatever during TV, he'll just ask for food at every commercial...so I can't totally blame her for giving in. I just don't know what, if anything else I can do.

Suggestions/etc. greatly appreciated.

ps...
Clarification, I'm a quasi-recent college grad, renting a room from my parents until I become a bit more financially stable.
