My Husband likes to have some cookies or treats in the house. But I don't do it all the time. For my 2 year old, I buy the nabisco Fudge stripe 100 calorie packs, or other 100 calorie pack treats, like the Special K snack chips (90 calories) That gives them a treat, and keeps the calories low. And this is only for snack time about 3pm. IF he wants something. I like the new Yogo's found by the fruit snacks. They are yogurt covered little fruit chews. Popsicles are always good, or make your own out of fruits and juices.

I think balance is the key to teaching our children good eating habits. Having sweets in the house isn't a bad thing if there is balance involved in the rest of the equation (fruits, veggies, etc...) As long as sweets aren't used for a reward system (such as, "if you eat your veggies, you can have a cookie").
It's a thought process that we have to teach our children. Sweets aren't necessarily a bad thing, if you use them in a healthy/positive way. There are some really great no sugar added desserts out there. Sugar free popsicles and sugar free ice cream can be fun treats for kids, especially in the summer time! At the end of the day, you have to do what you are comfortable with teaching your children.

Be well,
Kelly

Here's something I've been tossing around and am wondering what others do.

I don't keep our pantry stocked with sweets. On any given day you most likely wouldn't find cookies, cupcakes, fruit snacks, or any of that sort of stuff. I make dessert once a week and that's it.

I've noticed that it seems everyone else that I know has cookies or other treats like that around for their kids allthe time. I personally don't think my kids need that stuff every day and think that's why we have such a weight problem in America, junk is around too much. (I did as a kid and look where that got me) I don't believe in total deprivation, but I don't think it always needs to be around.

OH both of my boys are thin for their heights my 4 year old is in the 75th percentile for height and 25th for weight my 20 month old is in the 97th for height and 50th for weight. Their dr has told me they both are technically underweight. They are very healthy active boys, just thin.

So, should I let them have dessert type things more often? Or am I doing the right thing by making it a once a week (occasionally more) treat? What do you do in your house?
