Well at 3yrs and 4 mths he did it!
After my last post I quit, just stuck to some nappy free moments in a day, then just over a week ago, he used his potty and hey presto we have not looked back!

i am struggling with my second right now. my first started using the potty one week before he turned two. he is very advanced for his age, but my problem is that my second is almost 2 and is still very much a baby. it is hard to train when they are not ready, my hubby though wants him out of diapers (i am a firm believer of the husband making the final call in family life, but if i tell him we tried, but he isn't having it, he will listen to me). i use cloth, so he could care less when he wets, switching to undies would make no difference. anyhow, just thought i'd add my two cents. i don't think any child should be pushed into anything they are not ready for, but as a child care provider, i dislike changing 3 and 4 year olds diapers. so if your child is not in day care, don't worry about it, if he is, may be you can work out something whith the care giver on training him as well as you. just a thought. good luck, kim

Raising children is difficult enough with out having to feel pressure to fit a certain mold/profile while doing so! Don't sweat the small stuff and try to take a moment and smile knowing that your son is a growing happy boy...at the end of the day, that's really all that counts!

Hang in there!

Thanks for your responses.
I've decided to put a tin hat on it for now. (I know within a day is pretty quick!)
My son thanked me lots when I just told him, I was pleased with how he had done but that we can try when he is a bit older.
He loves his spiderman pants though, and is ok with sitting on the potty, so will introduce it for the mornings when he gets up and maybe another time in the day, but primarily will stick to the nappies. He seems to understand that one needs to wee etc in the potty but isn't quite aware when he needs to go.
Within 5 hrs of giving it a go I had cleaned up 7/8 accidents, and that was with popping him on the potty.
I know in my head children vary from 18mths - 4years but I am starting to beat myself up on what others think of him in this area, which is daft because he gets praised from these people on his social and language skills which does happen to be his thing, (why people can't take children as the individuals they are rather than apply the peer pressure) but anyway, enough..

I know my 2 year old is pretty early on everything. I started with him when I started noticing that he was dry in his diaper over night. (about 15-18 months) then I would before bath to put him on, and run the water for the tub. That sometimes helps. Praise was good for a while. We did match box cars (on sale) for a little while. He still gets a small sucker, or 3 "gusher" fruit snacks while he sits there. Cause if I push, he just cries, and can't relax enough to go. Now he is using the potty as a stall tatic to get out of bed. After I knew he could go on the potty, a few weeks later I bought some training pants, and he didn't like being wet in them. So that helped. But he still has his accidents (usually at least 1 a day) sometimes we make a whole day with none. The other thing we did is buy some "bob the builder" underpants, cause he really likes them. And we told him bob didn't want to get wet. He's been in Underwear before he was 2. I hate cleaning it up, but it's never been more than 3 in a day. Sometimes after 2 accidents we put him in pull ups for the day, and he can usually keep them dry.

Good luck,

Beckie

Hang in there - you are not pathetic...you simply want your son to be potty trained. I'm sure you have heard this before but every child is different and there is no "standard" for age and potty training. My pediatrician told us that our children would display signs of interest (telling us they had to pee or ask to see the potty or try to use the potty).
I personally took a more scheduled approach with my oldest. When she woke up in the morning, I would place her on the potty (whether she did anything or not, I would praise her for trying). Before bed and before a bath, I would do the same thing. I just wanted her to become familiar with it and what it was for. I think I bought every potty book out there for her to read with me. (some were better than others!!) Finally with her, one day it just clicked and we were good to go. I think she was just a little past 3 years old when she was in big girl pants.
Now my current 2.5 year old daughter likes to sit and sit and sit some more on the potty but won't do a thing when she gets there! I figure it will click with her eventually and rushing it may just make it worse. I tried to reward my oldest with stickers but she was completely unimpressed with that...so a friend told me she used two m&m's each time her child would actually pee or poop and it seemed to be the deal breaker!

Hang in there! This too shall pass and when he's ready, he'll get it. I do understand the frustration that goes along with it all. Keep us posted on your child's success!

How pathetic am I?
Decided in advance today was the day I start toilet training my 3 yr 2 mth old son. I have trained other children in the past, but for my son I am losing the plot!
5 hrs into this and accidents are frequent, last one he slipped up on it in the kitchen and I put a nappy back on him (temp) because it was tears and more tears from him. Told him this too, just thought I would clear up, do lunch before it comes off soon.
I feel so down inside.. am fighting this let him develop at his own pace versus the world asking me why is he still in nappies? (ok, not quite the world but feels like it.)
Sorry for the moan. My husband who was working from home left for the office to avoid the wetness everywhere. I worry he wont be trained before school which is a year away.. am pathetic coz I then went and ate an ice cream and chilli nuts.. sigh..
