All of my kids go right up after breakfast and brush. The same after dinner. It's just a habit that we started that right after meals, you go and brush. We also got the blue mouth rinse so they can see the spots they miss. They brush first without the mouth rinse and then I make them use it so they can see how well (or not so well as the case may be) they are brushing. They really like using that stuff. With my younger ones, I let them brush their own in the morning. Each night, they go first and then I get my turn in there brushing their teeth.
I also buy the kid friendly flossers so they floss every night too. Whenever I make them use regular dental floss, they just can get to anything but the front teeth. I just make it a part of the routine.

I go through this too...well used to.
I purchased the tinted mouthwash as well as character spin brush toothbrushes and now they love to brush. They actually try to rush each other to finish for usage of the sink

| I tell them that we have to get the sugar bugs and we make a game out of it.

It was easy and still is. I let her pick out her toothbrush, toothpaste, and purchase the blue mouthrinse that shows the spots that she missed. This allows her to brush well, and learn how long she needs to brush to really get her teeth clean.
She was allowed to make her own selections since the age of 4 on the promise of brushing min. 3 x's daily. She is 11 now and is still in the good practices that we started her on so long ago.

Getting kids to brush their teeth is a habit that one has to teach them - kind of like the life style change you are currently on but smaller scale!
Eventually they get older and it just becomes habit! Trust me it does eventually happen but takes time and each child is very different. My youngest two are the best at brushing their teeth but them I go in and brush with them just to make sure they get the back teeth and so on. My 5 year old girl is faithful on brushing her teeth and the dentist is always commenting on her great teeth. She is the only girl though and is big on having her teeth brushed, hair brushed, nails done, and so on. I brush my teeth but the boys have sort of taught her to be "girly" as they say it because they were worried about her being a tom boy! Now the older boys I do have to remind every now and them except for the oldest who is like his sister and brushes and flosses habitually! It is just a learned behavior though and eventually they will just do it without thinking!!!
As for the toothpaste spitting out thing with young ones... they learn in their own time and it might help if you brush your teeth with him and after awhile he might copy you. That's how I did it with my kids, I explained it and then taught by example so to speak. Until he gets it down just keep using the toothpaste made for being able to swallow. There are several different kinds and my dentist says at that age there is no problem with it as long as they are getting their florid in their water or drops if have well water!

| My sister has this product and it colors the plaque on your. It colors your teeth blue and you have to brush it away. It is really motivating to get all of the blue off. It is called inspector hector plaque detector.

| My son is 2 and he likes the idea of brushing his teeth but he doesnt understand yet that we has to spit out the tooth paste so for now i continue on using the baby tooth paste . How do i get him to spit it out before swallowing?

| Not wanting to be interrupted from what they are doing is a typical part of childhood. Make toothbrushing a part of a routine (such as bedtime routine). When the routine is finished, the children get to . . . . (read a book with mommy, work a puzzle, or some other quiet activity before bed).

| Set the example and brush your teeth with them.....kids love to see us do things with them and they copy what we do.

| I bought this blue mouthwash like stuff that they swish and if they don't brush their teeth well their teeth turn blue to tell them to brush some more they love that

| I think you answered this one yourself. "they just play till I come in and tell them again to brush their teeth". I would suggest you go with them to the bathroom for the teeth brushing ritual or send them one at a time.

My son (almost 9) hates brushing his teeth also... but he's doing it anyways. He's had his picture taken for the "no cavities club" at our dental office everytime we're going for check-ups, so he's had his prove that brushing hard pays off! He's really proud of his healthy teeth, and every time he starts complaining about brushing them i just remind him that brushing plays a major part in him being in that "no cavity club".
But sometimes i just tell him " fine, it's your teeth, why should I care? they're yours, they're gonna go bad, look ugly, smell bad... but i shouldn't care" and walk away to another room, pretending that i really really don't care. And then he'd brush them right away

Hi,
you can tell your child the tooth fairy won't give him any money because he's being rude not listening to his mommy. Or tell him when he gets a cavity the dentist puts a big needle in his gums & it hurts!
Scare him.

My older two (9 and 7) are good, but my 5 year old hates to brush his teeth - he hates the toothpaste.
You know, they seem to like the battery operated toothbrushes. Try one of those if you don't have one. Better yet, they have the musical ones! My kids LOVE them.

I brush my teeth with my kids. My youngest is 3 and loves to brush his teeth!
Another thing that might help is the Agent Blue or Secret Agent. It is a mouth wash that tints plaque blue so you can see where they are missing.
Or you might be one of those song brushes where as you brush it plays the music in your mouth. They run about $10 at Wal-Mart.

I have a 7 yr old daughter and a 5 yr old son and neither want to brush their teeth!! Every morning and every night is a hugh drama in our house. I send them to their bathroom and they just play until I come in and tell them again to brush their teeth.
I gave them a CD player so they could brush to a few songs to get them to brush long enough, but now they just dance to the music. I've taken away privileges but that only works some of the time.
Please tell me I'm not the only one going through this !! Any advise out there?
