| I'm sorry to hear that you got so bothered by that. My son "stims" by putting things in his mouth also, but not food. We actually had quite the battle trying to get him to eat normally. He would go all day with only eating a few bites and he would only eat a few certain things. It took awhile, but now he's eating healthy. He loves vegetables, even salad. broccoli is one of his favorites. I read that a person/child should be made to try a food ten times. After that they will probably like it or at least be indifferent to it. That of course may take more tries with a child who has Autism or something. That's basically what we did. We gave him the meals we were eating and he HAD to eat a certain amount of it. After awhile he was eating it with no objections and sometimes even asking for healthy foods specifically. I about lost it the first time he asked for tofu and broccoli for dinner.

My daughter has autism. Unfortunately, I kind of went a bit insane in another post regarding "parents causing obesity". My daughter is obese and it is directly related to her autism. Her form of stiming has always been putting things in her mouth. We made a rule when she was little (before her diagonis) that anything that went into her mouth had to be food. Now she just won't stop eating. I need help myself, and I don't think there is anything I can say to encourage you except...Remember back when you first thought something was wrong and the doctors or people you talked to told you not to worry about it? (At least that was the story of my daughter's diagonis.) Well, if you are concerned, don't let it slide. My daughter is high functioning and feels bad when the kids make fun of her weight. She has enough to handle with the rest of the stuff in her life. Dealing with weight loss isn't something I want her to have to struggle with.
I need to take a breather from the whole issue right now, but I know if I let down for a minute she will put more weight on. We have been trying for months to help her take a pound or two off. Mostly by encouraging more healthy food choices and more excercise. She has gross motor concerns and finds the typical kid like sports difficult. I'm proud of her though. She does make better choices for food options. Normally she will order a salad when we eat out now, instead of arguingfor fries.

| My son was diagnosed with Autism. He is far from being overweight though. He has also come so far that its almost as if there's nothing wrong with him now. The only time it really shows itself is through "stimming".

| i have an autistic child, he is overweight for his age. the doctor tells me there is no concern, but i don't believe him. what should i do about my sons' weight. I have some concerns, Need help or advice.
