If you are looking for a protein shake that encourages muscle growth. First google Leucine and read up on this. Briefly, leucine is an amino acid that is essential (meaning you have to get it from your diet) but it helps retain muscle mass.

Then if you want more info after you researched leucine check out this.

Read the real science tab and take the free analysis.

I hope this helps in your search for a good protein shake with muscle retaining ingredients.

The blackberry ones I've been making are pretty good.
I tried something different this morning. 2 scoops powder, 3 spoons plain yogurt, 1/2 an orange peeled, and fill the rest with Orange juice.
Kinda tasted like an Orange Julius from the mall!

i got some EAS whey protein vanilla scoops. I add a scoop of that to some Minute Maid Pomegranate Blueberry juice and it's delicious. doesn't exactly sound like it would work out but i love it. If you put the scoop in first, then pouring in the drink mixes most of it in from the start as well.

OK, I'm gonna give it a try, mainly for breakfast.
Last night I picked up some Body Fortress Vanilla Whey protein, skim milk and some frozen blackberries.
We have one of those "bullet blender" things from Christmas, so I figured it's about time I put it to use.
Tried one this morning and it was pretty darn tasty.
Anyone have any other good add in's to think about for a breakfast shake?

This board was a great find for me. When I do strength workouts, I seem to always "need" a snack, and I've been afraid to try protein powders, because I'm looking to lose weight... didn't realize they could help in that department too! Going to go searching for some this afternoon.

I have Endurox R4 (ordered off the net) for after workouts for the 4:1 carb to protein to recover(Tangy orange - 270 cal - 53g carb : 13g protein). When I need some extra protein and not alot of carbs I mix up MET-Rx Ultramyosyn Whey (Strawberry - 120 cal - 22g protein : 3g carbs) you can add milk and it's an awesome strawberry shake, extra fat and calories tho.

I don't really make "shakes" exactly, but put protein powder into all sorts of things. Vanilla goes well with Cheerios and oatmeal. Chocolate goes well with a banana and peanut butter, and on ice cream. Most nights I'll mix chocolate powder w/1 cup whole milk before bed so i don't wake up hungry.
It's like a staple of my diet; I keep a big tub of each flavor above the fridge all the time.

Any suggestions on a protein shake/supplement that's not too harsh on a student salary? I'm always iffy about which ones to buy to get the best bang for my buck. I'm not too concerned about calories or carbs; I really just want to put on some muscle and get some definition back.

TMI Wesley....TMI!
Thanks for the different suggestions on the shakes. I'm going to have to check some of them out.
I'm mainly looking for something for breakfast, and for during paintball tournaments to keep me going. Don't really have time to eat when I'm there.

I recently researched this on the internet and read that a man should eat 0.8 grams of protein for every pound he weighs IF he wants to build muscle. Further to this, the research also suggested that body builders consume upwards 1.0 and above per pound of body weight. I've increased my protein intake to about 0.7. Chicken is by far a huge bang at 50 grams per breast, boneless, skinless. I do also take whey protein, at 24 grams of protein per serving at 80 calories.

I personally like optimum nutrition whey protein. all the flavors are good except cookies and cream. Bodybuilding.com has some really good articles on best protein powders and when to have them. My favorite morning drink is 3 cups of coffe that I made last night and refrigerated, A splash of soy or regular milk, tablespoon of splenda and two scoops of protein powder. I swear when I drink that I take the best craps.

I bought the EAS brand at costco for a good price. It's a blend of soy whey and casin protein. It tastes alright and seems to mix well. A lot of bodybuilders will tell you to avoid soy protein, but that's not my thing and it has been shown to be very good for your heart.

I just add frozen mixed berries (no need for water and ice), Peanut Butter (for protein), a banana, and a bit of soy milk.

I really liked Scifit Whey Protein. They used to have a mint chocolate that was really awesome. I'm not sure if they still have it available . I know I tried some other flavour that a friend had but I can't remember what it was.

Does anyone have any brands they suggest? The one's I have tried in the past were not very tasty.
I am another one who isn't really a breakfast person, and cereal get's old after a while.

I'm not much of a breakfast person, so I often drink them in the morning which gives me a protein punch and helps me make it to lunch with less snacking. If you have the time, put it in the blender with a banana and or other fruit. Sometimes i put coffee and banana in mine. I also can't stand milk, so I use vanilla soy milk which mixes well and tastes pretty good. Good way to get more fruit in the diet. If you track your food on this site, you will see it makes a big impact on suggested calorie percentages (carbs/fat/protein). They are also a great post workout drink in that they help your muscles recover faster.

i am currently drinking protein drinks rather than the shakes so i can avoid the milk and just mix in cold water. it's 90 calories and gives me 20 grams of protein with no carbs. it seems to curb my appetite and give me lots of energy. i'm not using it as a meal replacement.......i know that wouldn't last for me. i love to eat real food.

Go for it! Works for me too, just make sure the shake has more protien than carbs. Only body builders need the extra carbs, weight loosers just need the protien and fiber.
