Good advice here already, so I'll just reiterate what the guys are saying. Run, run and run. Do invest in an MP3 player -- or a CD walkman if you're a dinosaur like me, who still uses his.
You'll want to vary the types of exercise you do. Boot camp is a total body workout. It's also about endurance. You're up night and day, working hard on not a whole lot of sleep. Train yourself now to being out in the elements, whether it's bitter cold, rain or blazing heat. Best of luck to you. Follow the advice here and you'll be fine.

Every one is saying what I was about to say, so I will add a little more for when you are actually in boot camp. I arrived on Parris Island December of 98 and I left the marines December of 03. I have a few ideas that might help. When you are out running I suggest getting an MP3 player if you do not have one and downloading Marine cadences. When you are in boot camp you run to cadence so that will help get you used to it. Also I will point out that no matter how in shape you are, the Drill instructors will NEVER be easy on you. They will find a way to push you past your limits no matter how in shape you are when you get there. Just keep this in mind: All the games and yelling is for your own good. They are being jerks to help you in the long run. Do what they say and keep your nose clean and you should do fine. Semper Fi

Oh, I would also learn the Marine Hymn and General orders. Also if you feel up to it, the Rifleman's creed. But not the one from Full Metal Jacket "This is my rifle this is my gun" Love the movie, but your Drill Instructor will not think it is funny.

| I just got out of the navy this past July.. Marine boot is the toughest of the branches but you'll do fine if you start running and doing pushups,sit ups,mountain climbers,pullups and some light weight training. Just keep training and don't stop, the more you train the easier the physical part of boot camp will be.. good luck..

Work your butt off. That simple.
Do NOT have a down day. Marines. Take my advice.. DO NOT spend one day eating peanuts and staring at the clouds. Figure out an alternating routine. Swimming, running, weights, walk 9 miles with pack on your back and DO NOT STOP. And throw in a spin class if you want to find how how healthy you really are. My skiing niece who is in top condition almost fell over after her first one. "I thought they were sissy workouts. They #$%^ near killed me." After 6 weeks of straight M-F spin class for 45 minutes she was in shape.
Boot will be a breeze... if you don't.. bwaaaahhhh hahhhhaaaaa...
And yeah you can do it. Way back in the 70s that is exactly what I did to get ready. Trust me your Drill will be much easier to live with and he won't be so nice whipping you into shape.

| I was in the army about a decade ago. My suggestion is find a friend and go jogging. Also work on pushups and situps. Jog one day and strenghth train the next. A friend goes a long way keeping you motivated. Good luck!

| I'm currently enlisted in the DEP for the Marine Corps. Just wondering if anyone had any tips for getting in shape and preparing for boot camp.
